Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Hal McRae smashed a homer and also threw out a runner at the plate as the Royals extended their club record winning streak to 10 games with a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. The Royals registered a run off Jim Palmer in the first inning on singles by Tom Poquette and Al Cowens around a wild pitch and infield out. The Orioles came back with their pair in the second, but McRae grabbed a liner by Al Bumbry and threw out Mark Belanger trying to score after the catch, to prevent another run. McRae's homer, leading off the third, tied the score. George Brett drew a walk, went to third on a single by Cowens and scored what proved to be the winning run as John Mayberry grounded into a double play.

Twins 6, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Rod Carew, who was stopped on his 14-game hitting streak in the previous night's game with the Yankees, got back in stride with a pair of doubles to pace the Twins to a 6-4 victory over the Red Sox. Carew's first double accounted for two runs in the fifth inning. Rich Chiles, who had driven in a run with a single in the fourth, rapped a homer in the sixth to give the Twins a 4-1 lead. After the Red Sox rallied to tie the score in the seventh, Carew doubled in the eighth and crossed the plate when Lyman Bostock singled. Bostock took second on the throw and later counted an insurance run on an infield hit by Mike Cubbage.

White Sox 4, Brewers 2 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run homer by Oscar Gamble carried the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers and enabled Steve Renko to win his second game since being obtained from the Cubs. Renko was lifted in the seventh inning. After Dave Hamilton relieved, the White Sox called on Silvio Martinez, who had come up from Iowa (American Association), and the rookie gained his first major league save. Gamble's homer in the first inning followed a pass to Ralph Garr and single by Richie Zisk. The Brewers pulled close with two runs off Renko, but the White Sox iced their victory with a triple by Brian Downing and single by Wayne Nordhagen in the eighth.

Mariners 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
After being held to one hit in the first seven innings, the Mariners rallied to defeat the Indians, 4-2. Wayne Garland, who was pitching with a 2-0 lead, gave up the Mariners' first run in the eighth on a double by Craig Reynolds and single by Jose Baez. Dan Meyer also singled before the inning ended. When Ruppert Jones opened the ninth with a single for only the fifth hit off Garland, Jim Kern relieved. Jones moved to second on an infield out by Bill Stein and scored the tying run on a single by Carlos Lopez. One out later, Reynolds singled to drive in the Mariners' go-ahead run and Steve Braun followed with a double to plate an extra tally.

Angels 7, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Smashing a 4-4 tie, Bobby Bonds homered with a man on base in the 11th inning as the Angels scored three runs to defeat the Tigers, 7-4. Jerry Remy had an earlier homer for the Angels, who failed to hold a 4-1 lead. The Tigers counted twice in the eighth on a homer by Bob Adams, double by Rusty Staub and single by Steve Kemp before tying the score in the ninth on a single by John Wockenfuss and double by Aurelio Rodriguez. In the 11th, Remy walked and Bonds followed with his 31st homer of the season to decide the game in the Angels' favor. Don Baylor later scored on a double by Gil Flores to account for an additional run.

Yankees 6, Rangers 5 at New York (night game):
The Yankees, who were trailing, 5-2, after six innings, came from behind to defeat the Rangers, 6-5. A three-run homer by Toby Harrah, solo swat by Mike Hargrove and another run on a single by Willie Horton and triple by Harrah built up the Rangers' lead over the Yankees, who had a homer by Lou Piniella. An error by Bump Wills proved damaging to the Rangers, enabling the Yankees to score two unearned runs in the seventh. Then in the eighth, Willie Randolph doubled with one out. After Bucky Dent flied out, Mickey Rivers singled Randolph home with the tying run and Graig Nettles followed with a triple to drive in the winning marker.

A's 8, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (night game):
Mitchell Page drove in three runs and scored twice to lead the Athletics' attack in an 8-4 victory over the Blue Jays. The first five runs in the game were unearned with the A's leading, 3-2. The A's made it 5-2 in the fourth inning. Jim Tyrone tripled and scored on a single by Rob Picciolo. Before the inning ended, Picciolo crossed the plate on an infield out by Page. After the Blue Jays narrowed the gap with a pair in the fifth, Page knocked in two runs with a double in the sixth and scored on a single by Earl Williams to clinch the A's victory. Steve Bowling hit his first major league homer for the Blue Jays.

Braves 5, Mets 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves smashed three homers in one inning, accounting for five runs, and beat the Mets, 5-3, in a game that was stopped by rain after 6½ innings. The Braves put on their slugging show against Jerry Koosman with two out in the third. Rowland Office singled and Jeff Burroughs homered to begin the barrage. After a single by Willie Montanez, Gary Matthews and Junior Moore followed with consecutive circuit clouts.

Reds 4, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds won in a duel between Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton when Dave Concepcion and Dan Driessen rapped run-scoring singles in the seventh inning to beat the Phillies, 4-2. Seaver yielded only five hits but had unusual control trouble, walking eight. Carlton gave up nine hits in seven innings. Greg Luzinski hit his 32nd homer of the season, but the first of his career off Seaver, in the third inning. Two walks, a sacrifice fly by Ted Sizemore and sacrifice fly by Carlton produced the Phils' other run in the sixth. Pete Rose accounted for the Reds' first two tallies with a single in the third and triple in the sixth. Ken Griffey walked in the seventh and Johnny Bench was safe on an error by Mike Schmidt before the Reds put over their deciding pair on singles by Concepcion and Driessen.

Astros 6, Expos 5 at Houston (night game):
With the bases loaded, Cesar Cedeno beat the throw to the plate on a grounder by Art Howe in the 10th inning to enable the Astros to defeat the Expos, 6-5. Tony Perez hit two homers and drove in three runs for the Expos, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. After Ken Boswell singled and Ed Herrmann doubled to score in the ninth, Cedeno doubled to open the 10th and Jose Cruz was passed intentionally. After the runners advanced on an infield out by Bob Watson, another pass to Joe Ferguson loaded the bases and set the stage for the Astros' winning run on Howe's grounder to Larry Parrish.

Dodgers 5, Cardinals 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers, who had homers by Johnny Oates and Ron Cey in their attack, scored an unearned run in the fifth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 5-4. After Oates connected in the third inning, the Dodgers racked up three runs in the fourth on a pass to Reggie Smith, Cey's homer, singles by Steve Garvey and Rick Monday and a forceout by Dusty Baker. Then in the fifth, Lee Lacy beat out an infield grounder to Garry Templeton and advanced to second on the shortstop's wild throw. Lacy proceeded to steal third and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Smith.

Pirates 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Bruce Kison rapped three hits, drove in one run and set up another with the first stolen base of his career while pitching the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Padres. Ed Ott doubled and scored on a single by Kison in the third inning. Kison doubled in the fifth, pilfered third and came home on a single by Frank Taveras, who had four hits in the game. Dave Parker accounted for the Pirates' last run with a homer in the sixth. Dave Kingman homered for the Padres' run.

Cubs 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Rick Reuschel, who pitched seven innings, drove in two runs with a single to help himself to his 18th victory as the Cubs defeated the Giants, 5-2. Willie Hernandez, who replaced Reuschel, ran into immediate trouble and Bruce Sutter finished the game, earning his 25th save but his first since July 16 in his second appearance since coming off the disabled list. After Reuschel hit his single in the second inning, the Cubs got their other runs on homers. Jerry Morales connected with a man on base in the fifth and Steve Ontiveros added a solo swat in the sixth.
