Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
After a run scored when the White Sox failed to complete what would have been a game-ending double play, Eddie Murray crashed a two-run homer to give the Orioles a 7-5 victory. The Orioles scored three runs in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, but the White Sox chased Jim Palmer and tied the game in their half on run-scoring hits by Jim Spencer and Lamar Johnson. Al Bumbry and Rich Dauer hit singles, Bumbry taking third, to open the Orioles' ninth. After one out, Lee May forced Dauer but beat the throw to first to prevent a double play. Murray followed with his homer off Clay Carroll.

Angels 7, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Terry Humphrey batted in two runs with a double and Bobby Bonds added two more with a homer in a 16-hit attack that carried the Angels to a 7-3 victory over the Indians. Humphrey's two-bagger in the fourth inning put the Angels ahead, 4-3. Don Baylor cemented the decision with his circuit clout in the seventh.

A's 7, Tigers 5 at Detroit (day game):
In a meeting of two outstanding candidates for Rookie of the Year honors, Mitchell Page smashed two homers off Dave Rozema and drove in four runs to pace the Athletics to a 7-5 victory over the Tigers. Page connected for a solo shot in the first inning and followed with a three-run blast in the fifth. The A's outfielder also rapped a single in four trips, giving him 11 hits in his last 23 at-bats. Jerry Tabb added a homer to cap the A's scoring in the eighth. Steve Kemp hit an inside-the-park homer with a man on base for the Tigers.

Royals 6, Brewers 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Coming out of the bullpen for his first start since August 7, Marty Pattin pitched a five-hitter and posted his seventh straight win as the Royals defeated the Brewers, 6-2. Pattin held the Brewers scoreless on three hits until Cecil Cooper doubled and Don Money homered in the ninth. The Royals were led at bat by Al Cowens, who drove in three runs with a pair of singles. The victory was the Royals' fifth straight and 16th in their last 19 games.

Yankees 4, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Don Gullett, who had been on the disabled list with a bad shoulder, allowed only three hits in his first start since July 30 and pitched the Yankees to a 4-0 victory over the Twins. The Yankees' runs came on a grand slam by Cliff Johnson, who smashed his homer off Geoff Zahn in the first inning after Thurman Munson doubled and Graig Nettles and Lou Piniella walked. Rod Carew had two of the Twins' hits.

Red Sox 8, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Rick Wise gained his 10th victory and Bill Campbell picked up his 24th save in relief performances as the Red Sox defeated the Rangers, 8-4. Wise replaced Luis Tiant in the third and retired 13 straight batters before giving up a run in the seventh on a double by Pat Putnam and triple by Kurt Bevacqua. Campbell took over in the eighth and yielded the Rangers' final run in the ninth on a homer by Bevacqua. Rick Burleson started the Red Sox scoring with a homer on the first pitch thrown by Gaylord Perry. The Rangers went ahead against Tiant with two runs in the second, but the Red Sox took command by scoring three times in the third on a triple by Rick Miller, singles by Burleson, Denny Doyle and Fred Lynn and a sacrifice fly by Carlton Fisk. As the game went on, the Red Sox proceeded to increase their lead with the aid of a double and triple by Carl Yastrzemski.

Mariners 7, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
Four homers powered the Mariners to a 7-2 victory, completing a sweep of the three-game series with the Blue Jays. Leroy Stanton connected for the circuit with a man on base in the first inning. Ruppert Jones added two runs with a drive in third. The Mariners then knocked out Jerry Garvin with back-to-back blows by Steve Braun and Jimmy Sexton in the fifth. Sexton's homer was his first in the major leagues since coming up from San Jose (Pacific Coast). Ron Fairly hit a homer for the Blue Jays' first run and scored the second after rapping a double.

Dodgers 8, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers, who hit three homers in the previous night's game, smacked three more and escorted Tommy John to an 8-2 victory over the Pirates. Reggie Smith started the bombardment with a drive in the first inning. Then in the fourth, after Steve Garvey and Vic Davalillo reached base with infield hits, Dusty Baker and Yeager homered in succession. The victory was John's 11th in his last 12 decisions and completed the Dodgers' sweep of all six games played with the Pirates in Los Angeles.

Astros 7, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
Bob Watson hit a grand-slam homer and drove in another run with a double to supply the Astros' principal punch in a 7-1 victory over the Expos. Jackie Brown, who started for the Expos, walked the bases loaded in the first inning before becoming the victim of Watson's jackpot wallop.

Braves 7, Mets 5 at New York (day game):
Biff Pocoroba batted in three runs, while Willie Montanez scored two and drove in one, as the Braves defeated the Mets, 7-5. The Braves scored four runs in the first inning, all charged against Bob Myrick, who gave up four hits and a walk and failed to retire any batters. Pocoroba plated one run with an infield out after Rick Baldwin relieved Myrick. The Mets came back with two runs in each of the first two innings, but the Braves broke the tie in the third when Montanez singled and Pocoroba doubled. Pocoroba homered in the sixth when the Braves scored twice for their winning margin.

Reds 5, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
George Foster cracked four hits, including his 45th homer, and Dan Driessen drove in three runs with a pair of singles as the Reds snapped the Phillies' 16-game home winning streak, 5-2. The Reds jumped on Jim Kaat for two runs in the first inning on a single by Driessen after hits by Pete Rose and Foster and a walk to Johnny Bench had loaded the bases. Foster hit his homer in the fifth. Driessen singled for his third RBI of the game in the seventh and Joe Morgan produced the Reds' last run with a single in the eighth. Fred Norman limited the Phillies to seven hits, including a homer by Garry Maddox.

Cubs 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
A pinch-single by Jose Cardenal with two out in the eighth inning lifted the Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Padres, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. The Cubs picked up their first run on a pass with the bases loaded in the fifth. The Padres tied the score with singles by George Hendrick, Pat Scanlon and Dave Roberts in the sixth. Jerry Morales singled to open the Cubs' eighth and, after two out, Manny Trillo walked before Cardenal came up and delivered his decisive single.

Cardinals 8, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
John Urrea posted his fifth straight victory since becoming a starter after the All-Star Game and Ken Reitz drove in four runs with three doubles as the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 8-2. Keith Hernandez added to the Cards' attack with a pair of doubles, producing two runs. Willie McCovey homered for the Giants.
