Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Indians 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Pinch-hitting in the eighth inning, Terry Crowley delivered a grand slam as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 7-1, behind the two-hit hurling of Rudy May. The Orioles, who went into the eighth with a 2-1 lead, began the inning with a homer by Lee May. A double by Doug DeCinces and two walks then loaded the bases for Crowley's homer off Larry Andersen in relief of Al Fitzmorris. May gained his career high 16th victory.

[DH] Red Sox 5, Tigers 1 (night game) / Red Sox 8, Tigers 6 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice drove in three runs with his 36th and 37th homers in the first game and batted in his 100th run of the season with a sacrifice fly in the second game as the Red Sox beat the Tigers in a twi-night doubleheader, 5-1 and 8-6. Bill Campbell, who relieved in both ends, earned his 25th and 26th saves. Rice homered after a single by Carl Yastrzemski in the second inning of the opener and added a solo shot in the sixth, in addition to having a single in four trips. Carlton Fisk also rapped three hits and scored twice. Ron LeFlore, who had hit safely in 17 straight games for the Tigers, was stopped on his streak. In the nightcap, the Red Sox failed to hold a 5-0 lead, but after the Tigers tied the score, Fred Lynn doubled in the fifth inning, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Rice's sacrifice fly to put the Red Sox ahead again. Rick Burleson then delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth and eighth for the winning margin to offset the Tigers' last tally on a homer by Jason Thompson.

White Sox 4, Angels 1 at California (night game):
The White Sox scored in the first inning on a double by Chet Lemon and single by Richie Zisk, then added a run on a homer by Jim Essian in the second to start on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Angels. Jorge Orta accounted for the last two tallies with a sacrifice fly and single. The Angels' lone run was unearned off Steve Stone.

Royals 6, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Erupting for five runs in the seventh inning, the Royals defeated the Twins, 6-3, for their 10th straight victory. With the Twins leading, 2-1, John Mayberry walked in the seventh and scored the tying run on a double by Darrell Porter. Amos Otis singled, driving in Porter. After a pass to U.L. Traveling the distance for the 16th time this season, Mike Torrez allowed only two hits and pitched the Yankees to a 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays. Jerry Garvin, who also hurled the route for the Blue Jays, gave up five hits, including a homer by Cliff Johnson in the second inning and singles by Thurman Munson and Chris Chambliss around a walk to Reggie Jackson for another run in the sixth. Garvin picked Jackson off second in the fourth inning, marking the 22nd time this season that the rookie had nabbed one.

Brewers 3, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Homers by Von Joshua and Cecil Cooper provided support for Moose Haas, who yielded only three hits and pitched the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Joshua homered in the sixth inning and Cooper connected with a man on base in the eighth before the A's spoiled Haas' bid for a shutout with a homer by Wayne Gross.

Mariners 8, Rangers 3 at Seattle (night game):
Tom House, veteran reliever who became a starter for the Mariners late in June, pitched the first complete game of his major league career and defeated the Rangers, 8-3. Until this year, House had started only once (in 1971) while appearing in 221 games with the Braves and Red Sox. Leroy Stanton hit a two-run homer in the second inning and the Mariners then chased Gaylord Perry while counting five times in the fourth. Luis Delgado, rookie outfielder from Pawtucket (International), drove in one run with a single for his first major league hit. Two more scored on an error by Sandy Alomar and the final pair of the frame counted on a single by Ruppert Jones. Kurt Bevacqua and Toby Harrah hit homers for the Rangers.

Braves 8, Padres 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Jeff Burroughs batted in four runs with a homer and sacrifice fly, in addition to hitting a pair of doubles, and paced the Braves to an 8-6 victory over the Padres. The Braves fell behind, 3-1, before taking the lead in the fifth inning when a walk to Pat Rockett and singles by Darrel Chaney and Barry Bonnell produced one run before Burroughs hit a three-run homer. The Braves then decided the outcome with two more runs in the sixth on another pass to Rockett, a single by Bonnell, double by Rowland Office and Burroughs' sacrifice fly.

Cubs 10, Mets 8 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by pinch-hitter Gene Clines in the ninth inning carried the Cubs to a 10-8 victory over the Mets. Bruce Boisclair had a triple, double and two singles for the Mets, who blew 4-0 and 7-5 leads before going ahead again with a run in the ninth on doubles by Steve Henderson and John Stearns. In the Cubs' half, after Manny Trillo walked and George Mitterwald sacrificed, Clines won the game for Bruce Sutter with his homer.

Dodgers 4, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):

After the Giants picked up their lone run on a single by Mike Sadek in the second inning, the Astros struck back in the third with two runs on a homer by Jose Cruz, a pair of passes and a single by Roger Metzger. Joe Ferguson singled and Art Howe tripled for another run in the fifth before the Astros wrapped up the decision with three runs in the sixth, including an RBI single by Ferguson for his third hit of the game.

Phillies 11, Cardinals 4 at Philadelphia (night game):

Carlton allowed only six hits, but they included homers by Garry Templeton, Ted Simmons and Ken Reitz. However, the Phillies had more firepower, putting the game away with six runs in the first inning. Bake McBride opened with a triple and scored on a double by Mike Schmidt. Greg Luzinski followed with a homer. A single by Garry Maddox, doubles by Tim McCarver and Ted Sizemore and a single by Carlton added three more runs before the inning ended. Luzinski homered again with two men on base in the eighth, giving him five RBIs for the game.

Expos 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Rookie righthander Hal Dues, who came up from Quebec City (Eastern), gained his first major league victory when the Expos defeated the Pirates, 2-1. The Expos scored their runs in the third inning.
