Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 9, Indians 5 at Baltimore (day game):
Doug DeCinces and Ken Singleton knocked in three runs apiece as the Orioles posted a 9-5 victory to complete a sweep of the three-game series and beat the Indians for the 10th time in 12 meetings between the clubs. Singleton accounted for his RBIs with a double and single, while DeCinces hit a homer and single. Rico Carty homered for the Indians.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 2 at Boston (day game):
A grand slam by Jim Rice for his 38th homer of the season powered the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. The Red Sox counted their first two runs in the sixth inning. Carl Yastrzemski doubled and, after holding up, had to stop at third on another double by Rice. An infield out by Carlton Fisk produced one run and a single by Butch Hobson added another. In the seventh, Bernie Carbo and Fred Lynn walked and Yastrzemski beat out an infield hit, setting the stage for Rice's slam off John Hiller.

[DH] White Sox 6, Angels 2 (day game) / Angels 5, White Sox 4 at California (day game):
The pitching of Chris Knapp and batting of Jorge Orta carried the White Sox to a 6-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Angels overcame a 4-1 deficit and rallied to win the second game, 5-4. Knapp had a no-hitter in the works before Rance Mulliniks singled with two out in the seventh inning. The young righthander then allowed three more hits while posting his victory and struck out 13. Orta batted in four runs with two doubles and two singles. In the nightcap, the Angels put over the winning run in the eighth inning when Bobby Bonds walked, stole second and scored on a double by Mario Guerrero.

Royals 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Smashing a tie with three runs in the ninth inning, the Royals defeated the Twins, 4-1, for their 12th straight victory. Singles by Bob Randall and Jerry Terrell around a stolen base produced the Twins' run in the second. The Royals tied the score when John Wathan singled and Frank White doubled in the seventh. Leading off the ninth, Wathan drew a walk and John Mayberry beat out a bunt. After a sacrifice by Fred Patek, White grounded to Roy Smalley, but the shortstop's throw home failed to nail Wathan. Joe Zdeb then singled, driving in Willie Wilson, who ran for Mayberry, and George Brett followed with a sacrifice fly to add the final tally.

[DH] Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3 (day game) / Blue Jays 6, Yankees 4 at New York (day game):
The Yankees, after winning the first game of a doubleheader, 4-3, lost the second game to the Blue Jays, 6-4, with the result that their lead in the East Division was trimmed to 1½ games over the Red Sox and three games over the Orioles. The wildness of Jeff Byrd, plus a two-run homer by Reggie Jackson, enabled the Yankees to win the opener. Byrd walked two batters in the first inning and gave up a run on a single by Chris Chambliss. Jackson hit his homer after a pass to Graig Nettles in the third. Byrd walked two more batters in the fourth and, after an error by Tim Nordbrook, the Yankees scored what proved to be their deciding run on a single by Mickey Rivers. Ron Fairly hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays. Tom Murphy, making his first start since 1973, pitched six innings for the Blue Jays in the nightcap and gave up only one run on a triple by Nettles and single by Jackson. However, Pete Vuckovich, who relieved, was knocked out in the eighth when the Yankees rallied for three runs, but Jerry Johnson came in to save the game.

A's 5, Brewers 3 at Oakland (night game):
Tony Armas and Wayne Gross batted in all of the A's runs between them to account for a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. Armas knocked in one run with a double and two with a homer, while Gross produced two RBIs with a double and single. Sixto Lezcano hit a two-run homer for the Brewers.

Mariners 6, Rangers 4 at Seattle (day game):
Jimmy Sexton collected four straight hits and Kevin Pasley, making his first appearance with the Mariners, knocked in the tie-breaking run with a single in a 6-4 victory over the Rangers. Sexton hit a triple, double and two singles. Mike Hargrove and Jim Sundberg homered for the Rangers. After Sundberg's smash tied the score at 4-4 in the sixth inning, Sexton doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Pasley, who had been acquired from the Dodgers. Dan Meyer iced the Mariners' victory with a homer in the eighth.

Braves 7, Padres 3 at Atlanta (day game):
A triple steal highlighted the Braves' scoring in a 7-3 victory over the Padres. Gene Richards and Jerry Turner hit homers for the Padres to help effect a 3-3 tie, but the Braves beat Randy Jones with a run in the sixth inning on two walks and a single by Pat Rockett. The Braves then loaded the bases against Dan Spillner in the the eighth and worked their triple steal with Gary Matthews scoring. Barry Bonnell followed with a single for the last two runs.

Mets 7, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Although staked to a three-run lead, Rick Reuschel failed for the third straight time in a bid for his 20th victory when the Mets defeated the Cubs, 7-3. A double by Bill Buckner, single by Steve Ontiveros and homer by Manny Trillo accounted for the Cubs' runs in the fourth inning. The Mets struck back with four runs in the fifth. Bobby Valentine and Lenny Randle singled and both scored on a double by Bruce Boisclair. John Milner tied the score with a double and Joel Youngblood sent the Mets ahead with a single. The Mets clinched the decision with three more runs in the ninth, two of them scoring on a double by Youngblood.

Reds 6, Dodgers 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Johnny Bench knocked in two runs with a double to reach the 100 RBI total for the sixth time in his career and Tom Hume gained his first major league victory as the Reds defeated the Dodgers, 6-2. Bench's double helped the Reds take a four-run lead in the first inning. The Dodgers loaded the bases against Jack Billingham with none out in the third. Hume got out of the inning at the expense of two runs on a sacrifice fly by Ron Cey and single by Steve Garvey. The rookie then shut out the Dodgers over the remainder of the route on only four more hits. Pete Rose, hitting safely in his 12th straight game, batted in a run for the Reds with a single in the fourth and Dave Concepcion capped the scoring with a single in the eighth.

Giants 2, Astros 1 at Houston (day game):
A wild throw by Joaquin Andujar on a pickoff attempt in the eighth inning resulted in the Astros losing to the Giants, 2-1, for only their third defeat in the last 17 games, Enos Cabell homered off Ed Halicki for the Astros' run in the third. The Giants tied the score with a triple by Derrel Thomas and infield hit by Bill Madlock in the sixth. Thomas singled with two out in the eighth, took second on Andujar's error and scored on a single by Rob Andrews.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 5 at Philadelphia (day game):
A three-run homer by Greg Luzinski powered the Phillies to a 6-5 victory over the Cardinals, who lost all three games of their series in Philadelphia and won only three games while losing 13 on their longest road trip of the season. The Cards scored twice in the first inning on a double by Lou Brock, triple by Garry Templeton and infield out by Keith Hernandez. John Denny walked three Phillies in the third and all three scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Johnstone, double by Garry Maddox and sacrifice fly by Bob Boone. The Cardinals went ahead again with three runs in the fourth, but in the Phillies' half, Tommy Hutton and Bake McBride hit singles and Luzinski showed his muscle to the Cardinals with the game-winning homer.

Pirates 10, Expos 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Dave Parker doubled in the first inning for his 200th hit, becoming the first N. L. batter to reach that total this season, and added a triple and two-run homer to mark the Pirates' 10-4 victory over the Expos. Bill Robinson also hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, while the Expos had solo swats by Ellis Valentine and Gary Carter.
