Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 7, Twins 3 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox scored five runs in the sixth inning, when Bob Coluccio and Oscar Gamble delivered two-run singles, and went on to defeat the Twins, 7-3. This was the fifth straight defeat and ninth setback in 11 games for the Twins.
Indians 8, Tigers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Paul Dade had two hits and drove in three runs to support the six-hit pitching of Wayne Garland in the Indians' 8-1 romp over the Tigers. Garland snapped a personal five-game losing streak with his 18th complete game.
Rangers 3, Angels 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers turned back the Angels, 3-2, and spoiled Nolan Ryan's bid to become the American League's first 20-game winner. A two-run single by Mike Hargrove gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the fifth and they stretched it to 3-0 when Willie Horton and Dave May unloaded back-to-back doubles. A two-run single by Dave Chalk in the ninth accounted for the Angels' scoring.
Orioles 6, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
Jim Palmer, with ninth-inning help from Dennis and Tippy Martinez, pitched the Orioles to a 6-3 decision over the Blue Jays and posted his 190th career victory. Dave Skaggs had two hits and drove in two runs for the Orioles.
Astros 7, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Cesar Cedeno and Jose Cruz each belted two home runs and Bob Watson hit one as the Astros downed the Reds, 7-2, behind J.R. Richard, who gained his fourth victory in five decisions against the Reds this season. This was the Astros' 12th victory over the Reds in 17 games.
Dodgers 7, Padres 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers outmuscled the Padres, 7-6, and moved closer to clinching the National League West title. Ron Cey's two-run homer in the 10th inning decided the issue. Dusty Baker hit a grand-slam homer, his first in the major leagues, to highlight the Dodgers' five-run uprising in the sixth.
Mets 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Lenny Randle's two-run double in the sixth inning propelled the Mets to a 4-3 triumph over the Expos. Tony Perez had three hits, scored three runs and hit his 18th homer of the season for the Expos.
Phillies 6, Pirates 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies, with Davey Johnson collecting three hits and driving in three runs, continued to outdistance the rest of the National League East by trimming the Pirates, 6-2. Larry Christenson won his 15th game with the aid of Ron Reed in the ninth.
Braves 3, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
The Phil Niekro-Biff Pocoroba battery combined its talents in leading the Braves to a 3-1 victory over the Giants. Nlekro pitched a six-hitter and had six strikeouts to increase his National League-leading total to 237 while Pocoroba stroked a decisive two-run homer in the second inning.
Cardinals 11, Cubs 9 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals blew 6-1 and 9-5 leads before finally subduing the Cubs, 11-9, on a two-run homer by Ken Reitz in the ninth inning. Johnny Sutton, the sixth pitcher for the Redbirds, was credited with his first major league victory.
