Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Twins 1 at Chicago (night game):
Jim Essian and Oscar Gamble hit homers as the White Sox gained a 6-1 victory to extend the Twins' losing streak to six games. Essian's homer followed a single by Alan Bannister in the second inning. Gamble added a solo swat in the sixth. Roy Smalley homered for the Twins' tally.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 2 at New York (night game):
Ron Guidry pitched a five-hitter and Mickey Rivers rapped a decisive two-run homer as the Yankees increased their East Division lead to 2½ games with a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. The Red Sox scored their runs off Guidry in the second inning. Carl Yastrzemski tripled and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Guidry then walked Carlton Fisk and George Scott in succession and Butch Hobson followed with a single for his 100th RBI of the season. The Yankees pushed over their first run off Mike Paxton in the fourth on a single by Thurman Munson, two-out force by Chris Chambliss and singles by Graig Nettles and Lou Piniella. Bucky Dent led off the fifth with a single and Rivers put the Yankees ahead with his homer. With one out, Munson singled to kayo Paxton. Jim Willoughby relieved and got Reggie Jackson to ground into a forceout, but Chambliss doubled to drive in an insurance run. The crowd of 55,269 at game set a regular-season attendance record for remodeled Yankee Stadium.

Brewers 6, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
After Robin Yount hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to tie the score, Don Money connected for the circuit in the 10th to give the Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Mariners. Leroy Stanton, Craig Reynolds and Juan Bernhardt homered for the Mariners.

Angels 12, Rangers 7 at Texas (night game):
Dave Kingman smashed his first two A. L. homers, including a drive in the seventh inning when the Angels erupted for eight runs to defeat the Rangers, 12-7. Kingman connected for the first time with a man on base in the third. The Rangers had two homers by Kurt Bevacqua and one by Willie Horton in taking a 7-4 lead before the Angels exploded. Before being knocked out, Gaylord Perry struck out eight to raise his career total to 2,823, good for fourth place ahead of Cy Young on the major leagues' all-time list. However, Jim Umbarger, who replaced Perry, was the unfortunate loser. Tony Solaita homered with a man on base and Thad Bosley doubled to chase Perry. Umbarger retired one batter and was removed after walking Rance Mulliniks, who later scored to become the tie-breaking run. Kingman capped the outburst with his second two-run homer of the game.

Astros 13, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Cesar Cedeno collected four hits for the second straight night, including his third homer in two games, to lead the Astros' attack in a 13-4 victory over the Reds. Cedeno knocked in three runs and, in addition to his homer, scored three other times. Bob Watson also accounted for three tallies with a homer.

Dodgers 18, Padres 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dusty Baker accounted for five RBIs with a double and homer when the Dodgers exploded for 10 runs in the second inning to trounce the Padres, 18-4. Baker drove in the first two runs with his double and on a second trip hit his homer with two men on base. Steve Garvey also had two hits during the outburst and batted in a pair of runs. The modern major league record for most RBIs in one inning is six, accomplished by eight players.

Expos 8, Mets 5 at Montreal (night game):
Steve Rogers reached his career high of 16 victories when the Expos rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Mets, 8-5. The Expos, who were trailing, 4-3, opened their rally with the tying run on singles by Warren Cromartie, Chris Speier and Jerry White. Dave Cash laid down a bunt and when Skip Lockwood threw wildly, Pepe Frias, running for Speier, scored from second base. Stan Papi followed with a two-run triple and Tony Perez singled for the 1,200th RBI of his career. Lee Mazzilli and John Stearns homered for the Mets and Steve Henderson drove in two runs with a single.

Pirates 2, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
With Phil Garner driving in both runs, the Pirates defeated the Phillies, 2-0, behind the pitching of Jim Rooker and Rich Gossage. A triple by Frank Taveras and infield out by Garner produced the initial run in the first inning. Rooker singled and scored on a triple by Garner in the sixth. Rooker was lifted with two out in the eighth and Gossage finished.

Giants 8, Braves 7 at San Francisco (night game):
Bill Madlock delivered a bases-loaded single with two out in the 11th inning to lift the Giants to an 8-7 victory over the Braves. Dave Campbell, the Braves' fifth pitcher, suddenly lost control and walked Darrell Evans, Derrel Thomas and Rob Andrews in succession before losing the game on Madlock's hit.

Cardinals 3, Cubs 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Perfect relief work by Pete Falcone, who retired 12 straight batters after replacing Bob Forsch in the sixth inning, saved the Cardinals' 3-1 victory over the Cubs. Forsch was forced to retire because of a strained leg muscle. The save was the first of Falcone's major league career. The Cards counted all their runs off Ray Burris in the fifth inning. A single by Mike Phillips, pass to Lou Brock and single by Jerry Mumphrey produced the first tally. Brock took third on Mumphrey's hit. After Mumphrey stole second, Garry Templeton singled to drive in the decisive runs. The Cubs' counter in the sixth was unearned.
