Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 7, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
While Geoff Zahn pitched a six-hitter, Lyman Bostock, Rod Carew and Butch Wynegar accounted for seven hits among them and led the Twins to a 7-2 victory over the White Sox. Carew, who had two hits, batted in a run with a triple in the first inning and scored himself on a balk. Wynegar drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Bostock hit a double and two singles.

[DH] Royals 7, A's 6 (night game) / Royals 5, A's 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals swept an extra-inning pair in a twi-night doubleheader with the Athletics, 7-6 and 5-4, to extend their winning streak to 16 games, longest in the major leagues in 24 years since the Yankees reeled off 18 in a row in 1953. In the opener, the Royals came from behind twice, tying the score at 5-5 with a three-run rally in the sixth inning and pulling even again at 6-6 in the seventh when Al Cowens tripled and Amos Otis hit a sacrifice fly. The West Division leaders then put over the winning run in the 11th. Willie Wilson singled and stole second. After an intentional pass to Darrell Porter, Pete LaCock singled to give the Royals their victory. In the nightcap, another three-run rally in the sixth inning enabled the Royals to tie the score at 4-4. Cowens doubled to account for two runs and then homered in the 10th to win the game. Doug Bair, pitching in relief for the A's, was the loser in both ends.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
The Red Sox erupted for six runs in the sixth inning and posted a 7-3 victory to salvage the finale of the three-game series with the Yankees and pull within 2½ lengths of the East Division leaders. Mike Torrez, who started for the Yankees, developed a sore shoulder and yielded the mound to Sparky Lyle in the fifth. Bernie Carbo started the uprising against Lyle with a single in the sixth, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Carlton Fisk to break a 1-1 tie. Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice followed with singles to load the bases and George Scott also singled to drive in two runs. Fred Lynn walked to reload the sacks. After Butch Hobson hit into a forceout at the plate, Denny Doyle cleared the bases with a triple. Luis Tiant gave up a homer by Reggie Jackson in the fourth inning and two-run blow by Thurman Munson in the eighth for the Yankee runs before Bill Campbell took over to finish the game.

Rangers 6, Angels 4 at Texas (night game):
After Rangers scored four runs in the first inning, Mike Hargrove homered in the second to supply the deciding run in a 6-4 victory over the Angels. In the Rangers' getaway, Willie Horton knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single and the third run scored when Bobby Bonds bobbled the ball on Horton's hit. Ken Henderson drove in the fourth run with a single. After Hargrove's homer, the Rangers added an insurance run in the sixth on singles by Ken Henderson and Dave May around a sacrifice by Lew Beasley. Bonds homered for the Angels, who were held to seven hits by Nelson Briles and Adrian Devine.

Blue Jays 4, Orioles 0 at Toronto (night game):
Manager Earl Weaver, after getting into an argument with the umpires over a tarpaulin that covered the pitching mound in the Toronto bullpen, pulled the Orioles off the field and forfeited the game to the Blue Jays. The tarp was placed on the mound in the left field corner as protection against light rain that began to fall in second inning. The Orioles were losing, 4-0, with the Blue Jays coming to bat in the home half of the fifth, when Weaver demanded removal of the cover, contending it was a hazard to players who might go after foul balls. When umpire Marty Springstead, the crew chief, refused to accede, Weaver took the Orioles off the field. Following a 15-minute warning period, Springstead ordered the game forfeited. The Orioles' bullpen mound was not covered.

Reds 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Tom Seaver gained the 200th victory of his major league career, pitching the Reds past the Dodgers, 3-2. Rick Monday homered after a pass to Dusty Baker to produce the Dodgers' runs in the fourth inning. The Reds came back with the tying pair in the fifth. Johnny Bench walked and Dave Concepcion doubled for the Reds' first hit off Doug Rau. Bench scored on an infield out by Bob Bailey and Concepcion crossed the plate on a single by Dan Driessen. George Foster and Bench singled in the seventh and, after Mike Garman replaced Rau, Concepcion singled to drive in the winning run.

Expos 5, Cubs 4 at Montreal (night game):
Jerry White singled in the ninth inning, stole second and scored on a single by Stan Papi to give the Expos a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. Gary Carter drove in two earlier runs for the Expos with a homer and double, while Jerry Morales rapped a round-tripper for the Cubs.

Phillies 8, Mets 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Schmidt drove in the Phillies' first run with a sacrifice fly and then homered with two men on base to clinch an 8-2 victory over the Mets. The Phillies, who had not scored in 19 innings, ended their drouth in the first. Bake McBride walked and stole second. Larry Bowa also walked. After a double steal, Schmidt hit his sacrifice fly. Craig Swan, who started for the Mets, walked himself out of the game by passing three batters in the second. After Bob Myrick relieved, the Phils scored twice on a single by Randy Lerch and sacrifice fly by Bowa. Schmidt hit his homer in the fourth following singles by McBride and Bowa.

Braves 8, Padres 7 at San Diego (night game):
Dale Murphy hit the first two homers of his major league career, connecting for the second time as the leadoff batter in the 10th inning to bring the Braves an 8-7 victory over the Padres. Gene Richards collected three singles for the Padres and stole two bases, raising his rookie season's total to 48. After taking a 7-1 lead, the Padres committed four errors in the eighth, allowing the Braves to score five unearned runs. The Braves then added the tying tally in the ninth on a single by Barry Bonnell, sacrifice by Rod Gilbreath and single by Willie Montanez for his fourth hit of the game.

Astros 6, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Ed Herrmann and Bob Watson whacked two-run homers and Gene Pentz picked up the victory with four innings of hitless relief as the Astros defeated the Giants, 6-3. Herrmann, who also hit two singles, rapped his first homer of the season after a double by Watson in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3. Watson smashed the tie with a homer in the seventh following a single by Jose Cruz.

[DH] Pirates 4, Cardinals 3 (night game) / Cardinals 10, Pirates 7 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning and won the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 10-7, after the Pirates had eked out a 4-3 victory in the first game. John Candelaria, the Pirates' winner in the opener, helped himself at bat with a two-run double. Rich Gossage relieved Candelaria in the ninth and saved the game, but not before allowing two runs to cross the plate on a bases-loaded single by Lou Brock. In the nightcap, Phil Garner batted in two runs with a homer and two more with a double to help the Pirates take a 6-1 lead before the Cardinals erupted in the sixth. Hector Cruz homered with two men on base, Garry Templeton batted in two runs with a single and Roger Freed, who led off the inning with a single, capped it with a two-run triple.
