Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 11, Red Sox 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Lee May knocked in four runs with a single, double and sacrifice fly and Eddie Murray drove in three runs with four hits as the Orioles routed the Red Sox, 11-2. The victory enabled the Orioles to remain 2½ games behind the Yankees in the A. L. East divisional fight.

Angels 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Bobby Bonds' single in the ninth broke a tie and gave the Angels a 4-3 decision over the White Sox. Thad Bosley opened with a single, moved to second on an infield out and advanced to third when second sacker Jorge Orta bobbled Rance Mulliniks' grounder for an error. The Angels had a 3-0 lead early, but the Sox tied the game in the seventh on Oscar Gamble's homer which followed walks to Chet Lemon and Orta.

[DH] Indians 6, Blue Jays 3 (day game) / Blue Jays 6, Indians 5 at Cleveland (day game):
The Blue Jays pounded out a club-record six doubles en route to a 6-5 victory and a doubleheader split with the Indians. Dennis Eckersley reached a career high in season victories in notching his 14th win as the Tribe won the opener, 6-3. After spotting the Jays a 1-0 lead on Al Woods' homer in the first inning, the Indians took the lead to stay with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Andre Thornton and Bruce Bochte's triple.

Yankees 9, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
Two-run homers by Thurman Munson, Dave Kingman, Reggie Jackson and Graig Nettles powered the Yankees over the Tigers, 9-4. Jackson also had a solo blast in the eighth inning. His first came after Munson singled in the the fifth. Nettles drilled his 35th following a walk to Willie Randolph in the sixth. Kingman's came in the third after a single by Lou Piniella.

Royals 7, Mariners 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Amos Otis broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the Royals to a 7-5 victory over the Mariners. Al Cowens opened the frame with a single, but the next two batters went out before Otis' blast.

Brewers 8, A's 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Sixto Lezcano hit a homer after Von Joshua singled in the third inning and propelled the Brewers to an 8-1 triumph over the A's. The Brewers added another third-inning run on Robin Yount's RBI single. The A's stranded 10 runners between the third and seventh innings.

Rangers 5, Twins 4 at Texas (night game):
Dave May scored the winning run on a squeeze play in the bottom of the 17th inning to give the Rangers a 5-4 decision over the Twins. Leading off the decisive frame, May was safe on second baseman Bob Randall's throwing error. Sandy Alomar followed with a bunt single. May stole third and took off for home on the first pitch to Bert Campaneris, who bunted down the first base line. May slid in under first baseman Rod Carew's throw to end the marathon.

Dodgers 7, Braves 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Monday singled home the tie-breaking run in the fourth as the Dodgers belted the Braves, 7-3. The crowd of 52,527 pushed the L. A. total to 2,756,484, a new major league single-season attendance record. The old mark of 2,755,184 was set by the Dodgers in 1962.

Pirates 6, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Rookie Ed Whitson received credit for his first major league victory as the Pirates downed the Expos, 6-3. Bill Robinson and Ken Macha each drove in a run with doubles in the fifth when the Pirates moved ahead, 5-3. Frank Taveras stole two bases, giving him a club record 64 for the year. The game's start was delayed 2½ hours by rain.

[DH] Mets 5, Cubs 4 (day game) / Cubs 4, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Jose Cardenal tripled home the tying run in the eighth inning and scored the game-winner on Bill Buckner's infield out to give the Cubs a doubleheader split with a 4-3 verdict over the Mets. The home team won the opener when pinch-hitter Ed Kranepool hit a bases-loaded double in the ninth and Cub outfielder Joe Wallis erred on the play to permit the winning run to score in the 5-4 Met victory.

Astros 11, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
J.R. Richard pitched a three-hitter as the Astros crushed the Padres, 11-0. Bob Watson hit a three-run homer in the first to give the hurler all necessary runs.

Reds 8, Giants 6 at San Francisco (day game):
Mike Lum's three-run homer with one out in the 10th inning lifted the Reds to an 8-6 victory over the Giants. Dan Driessen and Dave Concepcion opened the frame with singles. George Foster's three-run double had given the Reds a 5-4 lead in the seventh, but the Giants tied it in the ninth on Terry Whitfield's single and Gary Thomasson's triple.

Phillies 8, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Bob Boone drove in single runs in the first, third and fifth innings as the Phils pounded ex-teammate Tom Underwood for an 8-4 triumph over the Cardinals. Larry Christenson received credit for his 12th victory in his last 13 decisions.
