Today's scores and summaries:

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
With Jerry Garvin scattering nine hits and Rick Cerone leading the attack with three hits and two runs batted in, the Blue Jays dimmed the Orioles' title hopes, 3-1, and ended the five-game winning streak of Rudy May.

Red Sox 6, Yankees 3 at Boston (night game):
A three-run homer by Carlton Fisk in the third inning propelled the Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Yankees in opener of a showdown series. The Yankees, who saw their American League East Division lead trimmed to 3½ games, closed to within one run in the eighth when Dave Kingman belted his third homer in three games. The Red Sox, however, clinched the victory with two runs in their half. Carl Yastrzemski hit his 25th homer. Fisk followed with a triple and scored on George Scott's single.

Rangers 6, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Toby Harrah hit his third homer in four games, a three-run blast in the third inning, as the Rangers trimmed the Angels, 6-1, and spoiled Nolan Ryan's second bid for his 20th victory.

White Sox 8, A's 0 at Chicago (night game):
Ken Kravec pitched a four-hitter for his first shutout and Eric Soderholm and Lamar Johnson delivered key blows in a four-run fifth inning as the White Sox shelled the Athletics, 8-0. Soderholm hit his 23rd homer and Johnson unloaded a two-run triple in the fifth-inning outburst.

Tigers 6, Indians 4 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers spotted the Indians a four-run lead, but managed to overcome the Tribe, 6-4. A two-run single by Ben Oglivie in the eighth inning decided the game after the Tigers rallied to tie the score with four runs in the seventh. Rusty Staub triggered the eighth-inning outburst with his 22nd homer.
