Orioles 5, Blue Jays 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Palmer won his 18th game with a seven-hitter and Eddie Murray and Rich Dauer cracked home runs as the Orioles defeated the Blue Jays, 5-2, and climbed past the Red Sox into second place, three games behind the Yankees in the American League East.

Angels 5, Rangers 2 at California (night game):
Two-run homers by Bobby Bonds and Ron Jackson and a solo homer by Dave Chalk powered the Angels to a 5-2 victory over the Rangers. Bonds' fifth-inning blast was his 36th homer of the season and increased his runs batted in total to 111.

White Sox 8, A's 2 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox capitalized on seven errors by the Athletics, leading to five unearned runs, in an 8-2 victory. Henry Cruz hit a two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning.

Tigers 5, Indians 4 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers rallied for two runs in the 10th inning to overcome the Indians, 5-4. Jason Thompson tied the score in the ninth with his 29th homer. Lance Parrish walked, was sacrificed to second by Mickey Stanley, then scored the winning run on John Wockenfuss' single. The Indians had taken the lead in the top of the 10th when Frank Duffy singled, advanced on Paul Dade's sacrifice and scored on a single by Larvell Blanks.

Royals 4, Twins 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Hal McRae hit a two-run homer in the fifth while George Brett contributed solo homers in the fourth and eighth to power the Royals to a 4-2 decision over the Twins and their 19th victory in 20 games. Paul Splittorff pitched a seven-hitter for his sixth straight triumph.

Brewers 5, Mariners 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Slaton pitched an eight-hitter in his first complete game since July 30 and the Brewers scored four runs in the fifth inning to beat the Mariners, 5-1, before a crowd of 3,004, smallest of the year at Milwaukee County Stadium. Sal Bando's two-run single was the key blow in the fifth.

Astros 6, Braves 3 at Houston (night game):
Ed Herrmann drove in the tie-breaking run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and delivered an RBI single in the eighth as the Astros beat the Braves, 6-3. Cesar Cedeno equaled the Houston club record for hitting in 21 consecutive games.

Pirates 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Bill Robinson singled in the tie-breaking run that helped John Candelaria gain his 18th victory as the Pirates downed the Mets, 4-2.

Phillies 4, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Tim McCarver's two-run homer in the fourth inning was the big blow as Steve Carlton notched his 22nd victory in the Phillies' 4-2 verdict over the Cubs. The catcher also hit a sacrifice fly in the second frame to plate Garry Maddox, who had tripled.

Reds 4, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Tom Seaver hurled a two-hitter and George Foster smashed his 49th homer to lead the Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Padres. The homer came with two out in the first inning and Ken Griffey aboard on a walk.

Dodgers 3, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Rick Monday's homer capped a three-run second-inning and sent the Dodgers on their way to a 3-1 triumph over the Giants, enabling them to clinch the N. L. West championship. The winning rally began when Steve Garvey beat out a bunt and then stole second. Dusty Baker doubled to score Garvey and Monday followed with his circuit clout.
