Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 7, Blue Jays 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Hot-hitting Lee May belted his 26th homer of the season and 299th of his career, driving in three runs, in the Orioles' 7-1 rout of the Blue Jays that helped Baltimore move within 1½ games of the idle Yankees in the race for the American League East title. Mike Flanagan held the Blue Jays to six hits in his 15th victory.
Rangers 6, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Bert Blyleven threw a 6-0 no-hitter against the Angels, the first of his career and the second in the Rangers' six-year history. The 25-year-old Blyleven had four one-hitters in his career, but the closest he had previously come to a no-hitter was 6 2/3 innings.
Tigers 5, Red Sox 4 at Detroit (night game):
A four-run, seventh-inning rally carried the Tigers to a 5-4 victory that dimmed the Red Sox hopes of overtaking the Yankees in the American League East. Steve Kemp delivered a two-run double to key the seventh-inning comeback. Jason Thompson led off the Tigers' fourth with his 30th homer of the season.
White Sox 5, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
The White Sox scored two runs in the ninth to shade the Mariners, 5-4. Ralph Garr tripled after Brian Downing opened the ninth with a single and Garr scored the eventual winning run on Chet Lemon's sacrifice fly. The Mariners scored all four of their runs on homers. Dan Meyer tied the score at 3-3 with a three-run clout in the sixth and Ruppert Jones connected in the ninth to narrow the White Sox margin.
Braves 8, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Brian Asselstine doubled and singled, driving in three runs, in the Braves' 8-4 victory over the Astros. Cesar Cedeno went 0-for-3 after hitting safely in 22 straight games.
Expos 2, Cardinals 0 at Montreal (night game):
Rookie Dan Schatzeder pitched a six-hitter and singled to drive in the first run when the Expos stopped the Cardinals, 2-0. Tony Perez tripled, scoring Pepe Frias in the eighth inning, and reached the 90 runs batted in plateau for the 11th consecutive season. Frias was the pinch-runner for Chris Speier, who had doubled.
Cubs 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mick Kelleher walked to start the seventh inning, advanced on winning pitcher Paul Reuschel's sacrifice bunt and scored what proved to be the winning run on Larry Biittner's single as the Cubs dealt the Phillies their second loss in three games, 5-3. Bruce Sutter worked two scoreless innings to gain his 30th save.
Padres 3, Reds 1 at San Diego (day game):
Dave Concepcion hit his eighth homer of the season to tie the score in the top of the fifth inning, but the shortstop's error opened the door for two unearned runs in the last of the fifth that enabled the Padres to beat the Reds, 3-1. Gene Richards stole second in the third inning for his 39th stolen base of the season, equaling the major league rookie record set by Rollie Zeider of the White Sox in 1910 and tied by Sonny Jackson of the Astros in 1966.
