Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 4, Angels 3 at California (day game):
Making only his fourth start of the season, Mark Littell yielded just two hits in seven innings and the Royals took advantage of two errors by Dave Chalk to defeat the Angels, 4-3. The West Division champion Royals did not insert any regular into their lineup until the last half of the ninth inning. Chalk's first error on a grounder by Cookie Rojas in the fourth led to a pair of unearned runs on back-to-back triples by Bob Heise and U.L. Washington. Joe Zdeb, John Wathan and Rojas hit safely for another run in the fifth and Chalk's second error led to the Royals' last run in the sixth. Don Baylor homered for the Angels.

Orioles 4, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Ken Singleton and Eddie Murray hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning to power the Orioles to a 4-1 victory over the Indians. Jim Palmer, who won his sixth straight game and 19th of the season, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, retiring Andre Thornton on a pop-up, striking out Bruce Bochte and getting Rico Carty on a long fly to center. Dennis Eckersley, who struck out 12 Orioles, had one away in the ninth when Singleton homered to break a 1-1 tie and Murray followed with another circuit clout. The Orioles went on to load the bases and scored a superfluous run on a balk by reliever Jim Bibby.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Two-run homers by Carl Yastrzemski and Fred Lynn in the sixth inning carried the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. Ted Cox hit his first major league homer for the Red Sox to tie the score at 1-1 before Jim Rice singled in the sixth and Yastrzemski followed with his round-tripper. Carlton Fisk then singled and Lynn iced the verdict with his homer.

Twins 4, Brewers 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Dave Goltz became a 19-game winner, pitching the Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Brewers. Goltz was behind, 3-2, in his duel with Moose Haas until Mike Cubbage homered to tie the score in the sixth inning. Roy Smalley then drove in the winning run with a single in the eighth.

Rangers 3, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
A double by Juan Beniquez in the sixth capped the Rangers' only scoring inning of the game and beat the Athletics, 3-1, behind the pitching of Doyle Alexander, who posted his 17th victory. Keith Smith doubled and Mike Hargrove walked before catcher Jeff Newman committed a two-base throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Bert Campaneris, allowing Smith to score. Beniquez followed with his double, driving in Hargrove and Campaneris.

White Sox 8, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Jack Brohamer hit for the cycle, starting his big night with a three-run homer in the first inning, to lead the White Sox to an 8-3 victory over the Mariners. Brohamer's other hits included a run-scoring single, two doubles and a triple in five trips to the plate.

Reds 8, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
The Reds, after building up a 7-1 lead, had a struggle on their hands before defeating the Braves, 8-7. Cesar Geronimo and Pete Rose each drove in two runs for the Reds, one of Geronimo's RBIs coming on a homer. Gary Matthews produced two runs for the Braves with a single and homer.

Pirates 7, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Pirates rallied for four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Cubs, 7-3. The Cubs scored twice in the first, chasing Jerry Reuss, but the Pirates came back with a two-run homer by Al Oliver in the fourth. After Bobby Murcer put the Cubs ahead again with a circuit clout in the fifth, the Pirates began their sixth with the tying run on singles by Oliver, Ken Macha and Ed Ott. After an intentional pass to Omar Moreno, Bobby Tolan hit a sacrifice fly. Dave Giusti then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Ott to score, and when catcher George Mitterwald threw wildly after retrieving the ball, Moreno also crossed the plate.

Dodgers 1, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
The Dodgers scored on a bases-loaded walk and defeated the Astros, 1-0, behind the two-hit hurling of Burt Hooton. Dusty Baker doubled with two out in the sixth inning and was forced home when Floyd Bannister passed Ron Cey, Steve Garvey and Lee Lacy in succession.

Phillies 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Steve Carlton, seeking his second Cy Young Award, brought his record with the Phillies to 23-9 by shutting out the Expos, 1-0. In the second inning, Richie Hebner walked, advanced to second on a balk by Fred Holdsworth and scored the game's lone run on a single by Garry Maddox.

Giants 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Two pinch-hitters came through for the Giants in ninth to defeat the Padres, 3-2. Randy Elliott, batting for Charlie Williams, singled. After a forceout by Derrel Thomas and balk by Rollie Fingers, Marc Hill came up as a pinch-hitter for Bill Madlock and singled to drive in the winning run. Gene Richards, Padres' first baseman, broke the major league record for most stolen bases by a rookie, pilfering his 50th and 51st of the season. The former mark of 49 was set by Rollie Zeider of the 1910 White Sox and was tied by Sonny Jackson of the Astros in 1966.
