Yankees 4, Indians 2 at New York (night game):
Bucky Dent beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored the deciding run on Thurman Munson's single in the fourth inning of the Yankees' 4-2 victory over the Indians. Sparky Lyle pitched three scoreless innings in relief of winner Mike Torrez and was credited with his 26th save as the Yankees increased their lead over the Red Sox to 3½ games in the American League East.

A's 7, Royals 1 at Oakland (night game):
Joe Coleman pitched a five-hitter and Mike Jorgensen and Jeff Newman hit home runs to lead the Athletics to a 7-1 victory that snapped the Royals' eight-game winning streak.

Braves 12, Astros 10 at Atlanta (night game):
Home runs by Jeff Burroughs and Gary Matthews in the seventh inning produced the Braves' 12-10 victory over the Astros. Burroughs led off the seventh with his 41st round-tripper of the season and one out later Matthews stroked his 17th of the season and second of the game.

Cubs 10, Phillies 7 at Chicago (day game):
Larry Biittner had two singles, a double and homer in a 20-hit barrage that powered the Cubs to a 10-7 triumph over the Phillies. The Cubs broke a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning when Bobby Murcer clouted his 26th homer and Greg Gross belted his fifth. Biittner gave the Cubs an early lead with his 12th homer, a two-run blow in the first.

Giants 9, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run homer by Willie McCovey, his 27th of the season and 492nd of his career, highlighted the Giants' 9-1 rout of the Dodgers. Gary Thomasson had a homer, double and single and drove in four runs while winning pitcher Ed Halicki also hit a homer for the Giants.

Expos 9, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
The Expos, with Gary Carter driving in five runs, posted their 11th victory in 16 games against the Cardinals, 9-5. Carter hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and had a two-run single in the ninth when the Expos scored four runs.
