Today's scores and summaries:
A's 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Mario Guerrero, playing against his former club, smashed a three-run homer with two out in the eighth inning to bring the A's a 4-2 victory over the Angels. Nolan Ryan pitched the first six innings for the Angels, allowing only two hits and striking out 13 before manager Dave Garcia removed the righthander because he had thrown 123 pitches. The A's began the eighth with a run off reliever Paul Hartzell before Dave LaRoche took over with two men on base. After retiring two batters, LaRoche fell victim to Guerrero's homer. Guerrero played out his option with the Angels last season and signed with the Giants, who then sent him to the A's as part of the deal for Vida Blue.
White Sox 6, Red Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
A four-run rally in the eighth inning, capped with a single by Eric Soderholm, carried the White Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox. Singles by Ralph Garr, Jorge Orta and Lamar Johnson accounted for the first run in the rally. After two out, Chet Lemon knocked in two runs with a double to tie the score before Soderholm delivered his winning single.
Indians 8, Royals 5 at Cleveland (day game):
After the Indians scored four runs in the first inning, homers by Ron Pruitt, Paul Dade and Andre Thornton produced an 8-5 victory over the Royals before an opening-day crowd of 52,433. The Royals tied the score with a pair of two-run homers by Freddie Patek and Hal McRae in the second, but Pruitt and Dade hit for the circuit in succession in the Indians' half and Thornton iced the decision with his two-run smash in the fifth.
Blue Jays 5, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
John Mayberry and Tommy Hutton each hit his first homer in a Toronto uniform to help the Blue Jays defeat the Tigers, 5-2.
Brewers 16, Orioles 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers exploded for eight runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer by Larry Hisle and grand slam by Gorman Thomas, en route to a 16-3 trouncing of the Orioles. After Dennis Martinez, who started for the Orioles, failed to retire a batter, reliever Joe Kerrigan walked two batters to load the bases before being tagged for the first grand slam of Thomas' major league career. Paul Molitor, the Brewers' rookie shortstop, came up with two men on base in the fourth inning and hit his first major league homer.
Twins 8, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Making a hot start on another batting championship, Rod Carew rapped three hits in four trips, giving him 8-for-16 for his first four games, as the Twins defeated the Mariners, 8-2. Paul Thormodsgard hurled the route for the Twins and limited the Mariners to three hits.
Rangers 2, Yankees 1 at Texas (day game):
Two Ranger off-season acquisitions -- Richie Zisk, obtained in the re-entry draft from the White Sox, and Jon Matlack, acquired in a deal with the Mets -- paid immediate dividends in a 2-1 victory over the Yankees before a record Arlington Stadium opening-day crowd of 40,078. Zisk, who had three hits in four trips, drove in the Rangers' first run with a single in the first inning and smashed a homer for the winning run in the ninth. Matlack hurled the route to record his first A. L. victory.
Dodgers 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (day game):
The batting of Reggie Smith, who rapped three hits including a homer, paced the Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Braves. Smith singled and scored in the first inning, hit his homer with a man on base in the fifth and then doubled and scored in the seventh.
Reds 2, Astros 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
George Foster hit his second homer of the season to help the Reds rack up a 2-1 victory over the Astros behind the combined four-hit pitching of Fred Norman and Doug Bair. The Astros scored their run in the first inning on singles by Terry Puhl and Enos Cabell and a sacrifice fly by Bob Watson. The Reds, who were limited to six hits by Joaquin Andujar, tied the score in the second with Foster's homer and then put over the deciding run on an infield hit by Dave Concepcion and triple by Cesar Geronimo.
Mets 6, Expos 5 at New York (day game):
Pinch-hitter Ed Kranepool hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to carry the Mets to a 6-5 victory over the Expos. The Mets also had a solo swat by Steve Henderson in the fourth and two-run blast by Lee Mazzilli in the eighth. Dave Cash, who had three hits, drove in two and scored two of the Expos' runs.
Phillies 7, Cardinals 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Larry Christenson not only pitched an eight-hitter and shut out the Cardinals, 7-0, but also drove in four runs to lead the Phillies' attack. Christenson accounted for his RBIs with a single, a homer with a man on base and a pass with the bases loaded.
Pirates 4, Cubs 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, Jim Fregosi drew a walk, forcing in Steve Brye, to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Brye led off the frame with a double and Willie Stargell was passed intentionally. After Rennie Stennett flied out, Ed Ott drew a pass to fill the sacks and Fregosi then walked on five pitches from Bruce Sutter. The Cubs also scored on a pass with the bases loaded when they rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to tie the score.
Giants 6, Padres 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Jim Barr showed his determination to keep his place in the Giants' starting rotation by pitching a seven-hitter and shutting out the Padres, 6-0. Rob Andrews, filling in for the injured Bill Madlock, tripled with the bases loaded after getting three hits in the previous day's opener.
