Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 3, A's 2 at California (day game):
Joe Rudi, bouncing back from a broken wrist suffered last June, paced the Angels to a 3-2 victory over the A's. The leftfielder doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the first inning and hit a home run in the third. Chris Knapp, acquired from the White Sox over the winter, received credit for the win but needed late-inning relief help from Dyar Miller and Dave LaRoche.
Red Sox 5, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
The Red Sox posted their first victory of the season as Bill Lee blanked the White Sox, 5-0. Three Bosox runs were unearned, one coming on a double error by White Sox third baseman Eric Soderholm and two on passed balls. Jim Rice hit his first homer ever in Chicago, giving him at least one career home run in every A.L. park.
Royals 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Steve Busby, making his first major league start since July 6, 1976, hurled 5 1/3 scoreless innings as the Royals edged the Indians, 5-4. The righthander, who fashioned a 65-41 mark including a pair of no-hitters, in three seasons prior to undergoing surgery two years ago, yielded just two hits and three walks before departing in the sixth inning. A quintet of relievers struggled the rest of the game to preserve the victory. Darrell Porter drove in two runs for the Royals, including the winning tally in the eighth with a single following a triple by Al Cowens.
Tigers 8, Blue Jays 4 at Detroit (day game):
The Tigers bunched seven singles and three walks for seven runs in the second inning and defeated the Blue Jays, 8-4. Jack Billingham, who started for the Tigers, failed to retire any of the first four batters but then settled down and received credit for his first A. L. victory. Steve Foucault relieved and retired the last two batters of the game.
Brewers 13, Orioles 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
Cecil Cooper drilled a grand-slam homer to cap a six-run fourth inning as the Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Orioles with a 13-5 pasting. The grand slam was the Brewers' third in as many games. In the three-game bombardment of the Orioles, the Brewers got 38 hits and piled up 40 runs.
Twins 8, Mariners 6 at Seattle (day game):
Rod Carew rapped three singles to raise his batting average to .550 as the Twins prevailed over the Mariners, 8-6. The Mariners vaulted into a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning on the strength of a grand-slam homer by Leon Roberts. But the Twins tied the contest in the next frame on Roy Smalley's sacrifice fly and went ahead as Bob Randall grounded into a forceout. Smalley hit a homer in the seventh to account for the Twins' final tally.
Yankees 7, Rangers 1 at Texas (day game):
Reggie Jackson went 4-for-5, including a pair of doubles, and scored twice as the Yankees ripped the Rangers, 7-1. It was the rightfielder's first four-hit game as a Yankee. Ed Figueroa retired the last 19 batters in order.
Dodgers 7, Braves 4 at Atlanta (day game):
Steve Garvey's three-run homer in the sixth inning powered the Dodgers to a 7-4 victory over the Braves and completed the sweep of the three-game season opening series. The Dodgers trailed, 4-2, when Reggie Smith led off the sixth with a single. Ron Cey followed with another single and Garvey then unloaded Tommy Boggs' pitch over the right-center field fence. The Dodgers got insurance in the eighth inning when Rick Monday singled home two more runs.
Reds 9, Astros 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Dan Driessen slammed a three-run homer and Cesar Geronimo and Joe Morgan added two-run shots as the Reds posted their fourth straight victory with a 9-3 thumping of the Astros. Driessen's homer came in the opening frame and followed a single by Pete Rose and walk to George Foster. Geronimo's clout came in the fourth and scored Dave Concepcion, who had driven in Foster with a single. Morgan's blow came in the seventh after Ken Griffey singled. Two of the Astros' runs resulted from bases-loaded walks.
[DH] Mets 6, Expos 5 (day game) / Expos 5, Mets 0 at New York (day game):
Ross Grimsley, making his first N.L. appearance in four years, tossed a three-hitter to give the Expos a 5-0 verdict over the Mets and a split of their doubleheader. It was the Expos' first victory of the season. In the opener, Steve Henderson clubbed a pinch-hit, bases-loaded homer and Bruce Boisclair hit a two-run blast as the Mets held on for a 6-5 decision. The Expos scored their first two runs in the second inning of the nightcap on a double by Larry Parrish and triple by Chris Speier and later tallied on RBI singles by Andre Dawson, Gary Carter and Del Unser. Henderson's grand slam in the opener came off Darold Knowles, who relieved Hal Dues in the sixth inning after the Mets loaded the bases on singles by Boisclair and Willie Montanez and a walk to Lee Mazzilli.
Phillies 12, Cardinals 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Bob Boone's three-run homer capped a five-run first inning and sent the Phillies on their way to a 12-3 rout of the Cardinals. After the Phils loaded the sacks on a single by Larry Bowa and walks to Mike Schmidt and Richie Hebner, Garry Maddox stroked a two-run single and Boone followed with his circuit clout. The Phils had another five-run frame in the fourth inning when Schmidt homered after a single by Randy Lerch and double by Bake McBride. Greg Luzinski then walked, stole second and scored on Hebner's double. Hebner then scored on a single by Maddox.
Cubs 4, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Bill Buckner slammed a two-out solo homer in the eighth inning to give the Cubs their first victory of the season, a 4-3 triumph over the Pirates. The Cub first baseman also had two singles, two stolen bases and scored his team's third run of the game. The Pirates had tied the game in the fifth on Frank Taveras' two-out, two-run double.
Giants 7, Padres 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Mike Ivie, batting for the first time against his former teammates, hit a sacrifice fly to break a 5-5 tie and Larry Herndon drove in an insurance marker with a single to give the Giants a 7-5 triumph over the Padres. The winning rally started when Darrell Evans singled and moved to third on Terry Whitfield's single. Whitfield took second on the throw and Vic Harris received an intentional walk. Ivie then hit a fly to left to snap the deadlock and Herndon's single added the seventh Giants' run. The Giants had trailed, 5-1, but eventually tied the game in the fifth on Willie McCovey's 494th career homer with a man on base.
