Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 3, Twins 0 at California (night game):
Don Baylor hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and southpaw Ken Brett tossed a five-hitter in leading the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the Twins. Baylor's blow came after Joe Rudi opened the inning with a double. The third run came in the eighth on successive singles by Bobby Grich, Lyman Bostock and Rudi. It was Bostock's first hit in 15 at bats.
Indians 5, Red Sox 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Ron Pruitt's single in the bottom of the ninth scored Buddy Bell from second and gave the Indians a 5-4 triumph over the Red Sox. With one out, Bell beat out an infield hit and reached second when Jerry Remy threw wide to second after fielding Rick Manning's roller. With the count 3-0 on Pruitt, Dick Drago relieved Reggie Cleveland and Pruitt lined his first pitch to left for the game-winning blow. The Tribe had built an early 4-0 lead but the Bosox rallied to tie the score, Carlton Fisk hitting a homer off reliever Mike Paxton in the sixth for the fourth Boston run.
Royals 4, Orioles 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Al Cowens knocked in three runs with a pair of triples as the Royals beat the winless Orioles, 4-2. The first three-bagger came in the third inning and snapped a 1-1 tie, driving in Hal McRae, who had walked, and George Brett, who had singled to plate Willie Wilson with the Royals' initial run. Cowens tried to stretch his hit into a homer but was thrown out at the plate. The second triple followed a triple by McRae in the eighth. Al Hrabosky, who relieved starter and winner Paul Splittorff in the ninth, earned his first A.L. save.
A's 1, Mariners 0 at Oakland (night game):
John Henry Johnson, who hurled in Class A last year, won his first major league start as the A's edged the Mariners, 1-0, in their home opener. The only run came in the first inning when Miguel Dilone doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on Gary Alexander's single. Dave Heaverlo pitched the last three innings to record the save. Johnson, Alexander and Heaverlo all came to the A's in the Vida Blue trade. The crowd of 17,283 was a surprise as tickets weren't made available until five days prior to the game and no more than 5,000 were expected.
Rangers 5, Yankees 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers jumped on Dick Tidrow, who had recorded seven straight victories over them, for three runs in the first and went on to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. Mike Hargrove got a leadoff walk but appeared to be picked off by catcher Thurman Munson. First baseman Chris Chambliss thought Hargrove was trying to get back to the bag and, without looking, swiped at the bag with his glove. Hargrove, however, headed for second and made it easily. Bert Campaneris erased Hargrove with a fielder's choice but Al Oliver singled, Toby Harrah doubled and Claudell Washington singled to produce three runs. Tidrow left the game in the sixth after surrendering a double to Oliver and a homer to Richie Zisk. Ranger starter Dock Ellis pitched the first five frames to pick up the win although forced to depart because of a sore shoulder.
Braves 8, Padres 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Darrel Chaney, who had hit only 11 home runs in nine previous big league seasons, drilled a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to give the Braves their first victory of the season, 8-7 over the Padres. With two out, Barry Bonnell singled to center and Chaney drove the first pitch off reliever Bob Shirley over the left-center field fence. Earlier, Gary Matthews drove in four runs for the Braves with a pair of homers and Dave Winfield accounted for four Padre tallies with a two-run single in the first inning and two-run homer in the third.
Dodgers 5, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Ron Cey and Dusty Baker each had two RBIs as the Dodgers won their fourth straight game, 5-2 over the winless Astros. The L.A. third baseman hit a homer in the second inning and singled in the seventh to give his team a 3-1 lead. Baker knocked in the club's last two counters with a two-run single in the ninth. Starter Doug Rau got credit for the victory but expensive off-season acquisition Terry Forster pitched the last three frames to gain the save.
Mets 6, Cubs 0 at New York (day game):
Steve Henderson and Ken Henderson each drove in three runs with a double and a two-run homer to support the five-hit pitching of Craig Swan and carry the Mets to a 6-0 blanking of the Cubs. Doubles by Tim Foli and the Hendersons provided the hurler with all the runs he needed in the fourth inning. The Mets got four more in the eighth when Steve Henderson hit a homer after a single by Foli and Ken Henderson hit another after a base hit by Ed Kranepool.
Cardinals 11, Pirates 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Mike Tyson drove in four runs with a three-run homer and single to pace the Cardinals to an 11-2 rout of the Pirates. The Cardinals got six runs in the first inning off their old nemesis Jim Rooker. Lou Brock led off with a walk and moved to third on Garry Templeton's single and a fly by Julio Morales. Ted Simmons' sacrifice fly scored Brock. Templeton stole second before Keith Hernandez delivered a run-scoring single. Ken Reitz and Tony Scott also singled prior to Tyson's circuit clout.
