Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 8, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Mike Cubbage and Roy Smalley clubbed back-to-back homers to highlight a five-run fifth inning as the Twins breezed to an 8-1 victory over the Angels. Rookie hurler Roger Erickson had trouble only in the fifth when he yielded three hits, including a solo homer to Don Baylor, but the young righthander closed the frame by striking out Rick Miller with the bases loaded.

White Sox 9, Blue Jays 5 at Chicago (day game):
Eric Soderholm, Jorge Orta and Ron Blomberg delivered two-run homers to lead the White Sox to a 9-5 verdict over the Blue Jays. The wind was blowing at 25 miles per hour and aided the hitters. Soderholm's drive followed a triple by Chet Lemon in the second inning, Ralph Garr singled ahead of Orta's blow in the third, and Orta doubled before Blomberg's drive in the seventh. Rico Carty and Otto Velez hit solo homers for the Blue Jays and Velez knocked in two more runs with a sixth-inning triple.

Brewers 9, Yankees 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
The unbeaten Brewers continued their assault on A.L. pitching by smashing the Yankees, 9-6. In four games, the Brewers had produced 49 runs on 49 hits, including nine homers and nine doubles. After Thurman Munson's RBI double got the Yankees on the board in the first inning, Cecil Cooper tied the score in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer. The Brewers took the lead for good in the second on a single by Sal Bando and homer by Gorman Thomas. Catfish Hunter was driven from the mound in a three-run third-inning uprising and, after Willie Randolph's three-run homer in the sixth narrowed the gap to 6-4, Thomas' second homer in the bottom of the inning sealed the triumph for the Brewers.

A's 2, Mariners 0 at Oakland (night game):
Three pitchers combined for a shutout and Gary Alexander provided the winning hit for the second straight game as the A's topped the Mariners, 2-0. Pete Broberg, making his first major league start since 1976, gave up just four hits and struck out nine to gain credit for the victory. Alexander's homer in the first inning came with two outs after Miguel Dilone singled and stole second.

Tigers 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Milt May's three-run homer was the big blow as the Tigers clawed the Rangers, 6-2, behind the steady hurling of Dave Rozema. In the fifth inning, Ranger starter Doc Medich walked Rusty Staub and Steve Kemp and gave up an RBI single to Tim Corcoran. Ranger manager Billy Hunter went to the mound but returned to the dugout, leaving Medich in the game. Before Medich could make a pitch to May, Hunter started back to the mound. The umpires ruled that since the manager had made the first visit, he had to let Medich make at least one more pitch before removing him. On Medich's next pitch, May homered into the right feld bleachers.

Padres 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
George Hendrick doubled home Dave Winfield with the winning run in the ninth inning as the Padres edged the Braves, 3-2. Winfield reached first on an error by first baseman Bob Beall and scored when Hendrick lined the ball over third baseman Rod Gilbreath's head. The Padres executed a triple play after the Braves loaded the bases with none out in the third. Phil Niekro grounded to third baseman Bill Almon, who tagged Gilbreath coming from second and flipped to second baseman Derrel Thomas to force Pat Rockett. Thomas then threw to first baseman Gene Richards to retire Niekro for the third out.

Giants 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jack Clark hit an eighth-inning homer to give the Giants a 3-2 triumph over the Reds. All of the Giants' runs came on homers. Darrell Evans and Terry Whitfield connected in the fourth. Gary Lavelle, taking over from starter Bob Knepper in the seventh after leadoff singles by Dave Concepcion and Dan Driessen, blanked the Reds the rest of the way for the victory.

Astros 1, Dodgers 0 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard pitched a two-hitter as the Astros scored their first victory of the season, beating the Dodgers, 1-0. The lone run came in the first inning when Terry Puhl led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Cesar Cedeno.

Cubs 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Rick Reuschel pitched seven shutout innings and Bobby Murcer batted in a pair of runs as the Cubs prevailed over the Mets, 4-2. Three Cub relievers managed to hold off the Mets after Reuschel left. The game was spiced by a beanball episode. Reuschel hit Steve Henderson with a pitch in the sixth, and an inning later Jerry Koosman retaliated with a pitch at Reuschel's head. Plate umpire Jerry Dale ejected Koosman and Met manager Joe Torre.
