Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 9, Twins 5 at California (night game):
An eight-run first inning sent the Angels on their way to a 9-5 thumping of the Twins. Rick Miller started the big inning with a walk and went to third on a single by Bobby Grich. An error and a walk produced the first run, Don Baylor singled in two more and Rance Mulliniks drove in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. With two men on and a count of two balls on Terry Humphrey, Gary Serum relieved starter Pete Redfern and completed the walk to load the bases. Miller then hit the first grand slam of his major league career.

White Sox 5, Blue Jays 4 at Chicago (day game):
Jorge Orta hit two homers and Wayne Nordhagen and Ralph Garr one apiece to account for all the White Sox runs in a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays. Orta's blows came on his first two at-bats. Nordhagen and Garr hit back-to-back clouts in the fifth inning. The fourth win in five games gave the Sox their best opening record since 1966.

Red Sox 6, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Jim Rice and Fred Lynn slugged solo homers and Jerry Remy singled home two other runs to spark the Red Sox to a 6-3 decision over the Indians. Sox starter Mike Torrez, a $2.4 million offseason acquisition, was tagged for 13 hits but staggered to his first win of the year.

Royals 5, Orioles 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Amos Otis, who earlier in the day had been rushed to the hospital when he passed a kidney stone, delivered a three-run homer as the Royals erupted in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 decision over the winless Orioles. A walk to Hal McRae and single by Al Cowens preceded Otis' blow. Darrell Porter followed with an inside-the-park homer. Joe Zdeb then tripled and scored on Eddie Murray's misplay of a grounder by Clint Hurdle.

Brewers 5, Yankees 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Moose Haas set a club record with 14 strikeouts as the Brewers defeated the Yankees, 5-3, for their fifth straight triumph. The Yanks had a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning, but after starter Ken Holtzman yielded a leadoff single to Sal Bando, he was replaced by Rich Gossage. Larry Hisle then hit a two-run homer. Don Money doubled home the winning runs in the seventh. Haas whiffed Reggie Jackson four times.

A's 4, Mariners 3 at Oakland (night game):
Jeff Newman homered leading off the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the A's their third straight victory over the Mariners, 4-3. The Mariners broke a scoreless tie in the seventh on a double by Bill Stein, single by Bob Stinson and triple by Craig Reynolds. The A's got three in the bottom of the inning on two errors, a walk, a wild pitch and singles by Wayne Gross and Tony Armas. Bruce Bochte's double, an infield out and Steve Braun's sacrifice fly tied it for the Mariners in the eighth.

Tigers 3, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Mark Fidrych gave up a two-run homer to Al Oliver in the first inning but then settled down and allowed just six runners to reach first as the Tigers edged the Rangers, 3-2. The first Tiger run was engineered through singles by Steve Kemp and Charlie Spikes and a double by Aurelio Rodriguez. A homer by Lance Parrish tied the score in the fifth and the Tigers then put over the winning tally in the seventh on singles by Rodriguez, Mark Wagner and Ron LeFlore.

Reds 12, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Joe Morgan's two doubles, a single and four RBIs sparked a 20-hit attack that spoiled Vida Blue's N.L. debut and carried the Reds to a 12-3 romp over the Giants. The Reds pounded out eight doubles and one triple with 10 of their 20 hits and six of their runs coming off Blue. Bill Bonham scattered five hits to pick up his second victory of the campaign.

Astros 11, Dodgers 10 at Houston (night game):
Jesus Alou drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Astros outlasted the Dodgers, 11-10, in a wild slugfest. The decisive tally resulted when Art Howe opened the frame with a double. Jimmy Sexton ran for Howe and moved to third on Wilbur Howard's infield out. Alou then rapped a bouncer to second baseman Davey Lopes, but Sexton beat the throw to the plate. The Dodgers had tied the game in the seventh with four runs after two were out and nobody on. Dusty Baker's single and two walks loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Lee Lacy, Lopes and Bill Russell then followed with consecutive singles. The Astros had scored five runs in the fourth despite having two outs and no runners aboard. Bob Watson slammed a double after two walks and Howe blasted a three-run homer after another walk.

Cubs 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Dave Kingman's sixth-inning double drove in the go-ahead run as the Cubs took advantage of two Met errors to score an unearned pair and post a 4-2 victory over the New Yorkers. Kingman's double scored Bobby Murcer, who had reached base when right fielder Bruce Boisclair dropped his fly ball. In the fifth frame, Steve Henderson dropped a fly ball by Hector Cruz for a two-base error. Cruz moved to third on a sacrifice by Ray Burris and scored on an infield grounder by Greg Gross.

Expos 8, Phillies 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
Gary Carter and Chris Speier hit two-run homers and reliever Bill Atkinson choked off a late Philadelphia surge as the Expos edged the Phillies, 8-7. Carter's clout came in the fourth inning and followed a double by Dave Cash. Speier's smash came in the fifth and was preceded by Larry Parrish's double. The Expos added three more runs in the sixth, with Parrish singling in two. Their final tally came in the ninth on a double by Pepe Frias and single by Andre Dawson. The Phillies' pair of ninth-inning markers were driven in a on single by Larry Bowa and sacrifice fly by Bob Boone before Atkinson retired the side.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Forsch breezed to his second victory of the year as the Cardinals topped the Pirates, 5-1. The go-ahead run came in the fourth inning when Ken Reitz reached second on Frank Taveras' throwing error and scored on Mike Tyson's double. Keith Hernandez, who has hit safely in all five Card games, upped his average to .526 for the young season.
