Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 8, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
An eight-run fifth inning carried the Yankees to an 8-2 rout of the Orioles. The Bronx Bombers stroked seven consecutive singles in their big frame. Bucky Dent, Mickey Rivers and Thurman Munson each drove in a run and Reggie Jackson drove in two. With two out and the bases loaded, Chris Chambliss lined a double to the right field fence. Winning pitcher Ron Guidry was forced to leave the game after swallowing his chewing tobacco while jumping for Rich Dauer's Baltimore chop.

Mariners 6, Angels 5 at California (night game):
The Mariners edged the Angels, 6-5, on Leon Roberts' 12th-inning single. The decisive bingle scored Dan Meyer, who led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. The game-winning hit came off reliever Paul Hartzell, who had not allowed a run in five previous appearances. Larry Milbourne's RBI single in the top of the 11th had given the Mariners a 5-4 lead, but the Angels tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Bobby Grich singled and scored on Don Baylor's two-out double.

Tigers 4, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Longtime National Leaguer Jack Billingham tossed a three-hitter to pick up his third straight A.L. victory as the Tigers defeated the White Sox, 4-1. The Tigers scored three runs in the second on a double by Lance Parrish, walk to Aurelio Rodriguez, Ron LeFlore's RBI single and Steve Dillard's two-run triple. Rodriguez hit a homer in the fourth for the Tigers' final run.

Royals 8, Rangers 6 at Texas (night game):
A two-run homer by Tom Poquette sparked a six-run sixth-inning rally in the Royals' come-from-behind 8-6 triumph over the Rangers. With Texas ahead, 6-2, Al Cowens and Darrell Porter drew walks to launch the rally. Clint Hurdle singled up the middle to score one run. Reggie Cleveland relieved Dock Ellis and allowed a run-scoring single to Amos Otis and another run scored on an infield out. One out later, Poquette slammed a shot into the right field seats to put the Royals ahead. An additional tally came across when Hal McRae doubled and scored on George Brett's single.

Indians 4, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
The Indians got off to a fast start and held on to top the Blue Jays, 4-2. Jim Norris opened the game with a single and scored on a double by Johnny Grubb, who scored on Andre Thornton's double. The Tribe added a run in the second on an RBI single by Rick Manning and in the ninth on a wild pitch. The Jays' runs came in the first on back-to-back singles by Bob Bailor and Roy Howell followed by a wild pitch and in the ninth on Rico Carty's solo homer.

Astros 4, Padres 3 at Houston (night game):
Pinch-hitter Denny Walling's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th scored pinch-runner Julio Gonzalez with the winning tally as the Astros downed the Padres, 4-3. Art Howe opened the 10th with a single and was replaced by Gonzalez, who went to second on Ed Herrmann's sacrifice bunt. Roger Metzger walked and both runners moved up on Wilbur Howard's groundout. Walling then drove the ball over left fielder Jerry Turner's head. Padre starter Dave Freisleben retired 10 of the first 11 batters but Cesar Cedeno's one-out single in the fourth inning was followed by a walk to Jose Cruz and Bob Watson's three-run homer. RBI singles by Oscar Gamble and Bill Almon lifted the Padres to a 3-3 tie in the sixth.

Expos 5, Cardinals 3 at Montreal (day game):
Seventh-inning singles by Dave Cash and Andre Dawson broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Expos their fifth consecutive victory, a 5-3 decision over the Cardinals. The winning rally began when reliever Mark Littell, who had just entered the game, walked Larry Parrish. After a sacrifice by Rudy May, Warren Cromartie was given an intentional walk. Cash then singled for one run and Dawson followed with another single for an insurance tally. The Expos tied the game in the sixth when Dawson tripled and scored on Gary Carter's sacrifice fly. Roger Freed had given the Cardinals the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.

Pirates 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
A double steal by Omar Moreno and Dave Parker turned into a pair of runs in the eighth inning when third baseman Bobby Valentine misplayed catcher John Stearns' throw and enabled the Pirates to defeat the Mets, 4-2. Moreno drew a one-out walk off reliever Mardie Cornejo and stole second. Parker then received an intentional pass. With Bill Robinson at bat, Moreno and Parker worked a double steal and when Stearns' throw to third skipped off Valentine's glove down the left field line, both runners scored to snap a 2-2 tie. The Mets had rallied in the seventh to produce that deadlock on pinch-singles by Ed Kranepool and Joel Youngblood.

Phillies 12, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Randy Lerch scattered six hits and drove in three runs with a homer and double as the Phillies thumped the Cubs, 12-2. The pitcher's first big league homer came in the third inning and followed Bob Boone's triple to give the Phils a 2-1 lead. Lerch made it 3-1 in the fifth with a two-base hit to right-center, scoring Boone, who had singled. The Phils got nine runs in a sixth-inning eruption with a three-run homer by Mike Schmidt climaxing the outburst.
