Today's scores and summaries:
Mariners 5, Angels 4 at California (night game):
After opening up an early 5-1 lead, the Mariners held on to post a 5-4 triumph over the Angels. The Mariners got four of their runs in the third inning. Consecutive singles by Larry Milbourne, Julio Cruz, Bruce Bochte and Leon Roberts accounted for two tallies and another pair crossed the plate on Ruppert Jones' single following a wild pitch and intentional walk. Leroy Stanton drilled a homer to lead off the Mariners' second. Angel manager Dave Garcia protested the game in the sixth inning when Lyman Bostock was held to first base by plate umpire Joe Brinkman on a single down the right field line that was touched by a ball boy. One out later, Don Baylor smashed a homer to cut the Mariners' lead to 5-3.
White Sox 7, Tigers 2 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox benefited from errors to score five runs in the eighth inning and defeat the Tigers. 7-2. Pinch-hitter Wayne Nordhagen reached first on Mark Wagner's error to open the inning. Nordhagen took second on a passed ball and, after Alan Bannister struck out, scored on Jorge Orta's single. Bobby Bonds was walked intentionally and the sacks were loaded when pitcher Steve Foucault failed to pick up Lamar Johnson's slow grounder for another error. Chet Lemon then blasted a triple to clear the bases and eventually came home on Greg Pryor's single.
Blue Jays 3, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run homer in the ninth inning by Roy Howell lifted the Blue Jays to a 3-1 triumph over the Royals. The big blow was preceded by a leadoff walk to Willie Upshaw and sacrifice bunt by Bob Bailor. The game marked pitcher Paul Splittorff's first loss after 11 consecutive wins dating back to last August. The Royals got an unearned run in the second frame when Freddie Patek singled home Amos Otis, who had walked and moved to second on Howell's error. Ex-Royal John Mayberry tied the score in the fifth with a home run.
Brewers 6, Red Sox 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers thumped high-priced pitching acquisition Mike Torrez in their 6-4 conquest of the Red Sox. Cecil Cooper hit a solo blast in the first to put the Brewers ahead, 2-1, and Charlie Moore belted a two-run blast in the second. The Brewers chased Torrez in the third with a fifth run on singles by Jim Gantner, Cooper and Ben Oglivie. The homers boosted the Brewers' league-leading total to 28.
A's 9, Twins 8 at Oakland (night game):
Turning from hero to goat, Dan Ford drove in seven runs but then overthrew third base in the bottom of the 12th inning, allowing pinch-runner Steve Staggs to score the winner from first base on a single by Jim Essian as the A's ralled for three runs to defeat the Twins, 9-8. It was the A's eighth straight victory and the Twins' ninth straight loss. Mitchell Page led off the A's 12th with a single, went to third on Miguel Dilone's single and scored on Dave Revering's single. Essian then grounded a single to center to score Dilone and when Staggs rounded third base, Ford's throw bounced into the Twins' dugout. Ford had put the Twins ahead in the top of the inning with a two-run double after the A's tied game with two out in the ninth on a homer by Page.
Rangers 3, Indians 0 at Texas (night game):
Following the previous night's 4-1 victory over the Royals, the Rangers won two consecutive games for the first time this season when Doyle Alexander blanked the Indians, 3-0, on a six-hitter. The Rangers got two runs in the third inning when Juan Beniquez reached base on an infield hit and Mike Hargrove powered a drive into the right field seats. Richie Zisk socked a round-tripper to open the fourth.
Braves 6, Giants 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Rookie first baseman Dale Murphy drove in three runs with a triple and single to pace the Braves to a 6-1 decision over the Giants. The Braves put the game away with three runs in the fourth inning. Jeff Burroughs drew a walk, Cito Gaston singled and both runners scored on Murphy's triple. Murphy then scored on a triple by Rod Gilbreath. Of the Braves' five victories this season, four had come against the Giants.
Dodgers 14, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Dodgers clubbed four pitchers for 19 hits en route to a 14-4 pasting of the Reds. Tom Seaver, making his fifth start of the season, suffered his second straight loss without a victory. The ace righthander was pounded for eight hits, including consecutive home runs by Davey Lopes and Bill Russell in the fourth inning, before departing for a pinch-hitter. Seaver had yielded eight homers in 27 innings with an ERA of 5.00.
Padres 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Gaylord Perry recorded his 248th career victory as the Padres nudged the Astros, 2-1. The Padres got a run in the third as Chuck Baker drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Ozzie Smith's two-out opposite-field blooper to left. Derrel Thomas singled home Gene Tenace in the ninth. Perry lost his shutout bid in the ninth when Bob Watson doubled and Joe Ferguson singled. After Ferguson's hit, Rollie Fingers came on to retire the final Astro batter.
Cardinals 12, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
In their first game since Jack Krol became interim manager, replacing Vern Rapp, the Cardinals jumped on five pitchers for 19 hits and stampeded to a 12-2 drubbing of the Expos. Ken Reitz drove home three runs, including two with a homer.
Pirates 1, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Ed Ott led off the 11th inning with a homer and Bert Blyleven went all the way for his first N.L. victory as the Pirates edged the Mets, 1-0. The loss marked the 10th time in 19 games that the Mets had scored two runs or less.
Cubs 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Bobby Murcer's fourth career grand slam followed a two-out error and gave the Cubs all the runs necessary to defeat the Phillies, 4-2. Joe Wallis walked with one out in the third inning and went to second on Rick Reuschel's sacrifice. After Ivan DeJesus walked, Gene Clines reached first safely when second baseman Davey Johnson booted his grounder, loading the bases. Murcer then hit a 3-1 pitch by Steve Carlton over the right field fence.
