Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Mariners 1 at California (night game):
Frank Tanana became the major leagues' first five-game winner as the Angels downed the Mariners, 5-1. The lefty yielded only a fourth-inning homer to Leon Roberts and three harmless singles. Lyman Bostock's first-inning triple drove in Bobby Grich with the Angels' first run and Rance Mulliniks singled home Carney Lansford, who had doubled, in the second. Pinch-hitter Tony Solaita delivered a key two-run single during a three-run outburst in the seventh inning.

Blue Jays 8, Royals 7 at Kansas City (night game):
With Rico Carty driving in five runs with a pair of homers and Willie Upshaw socking a two-run double in the ninth, the Blue Jays posted an 8-7 victory over the Royals. Carty's second round-tripper came with two mates aboard in the eighth and pulled the Jays within one run at 7-6. After the first two batters were retired in the Jays' ninth, pinch-hitters Tommy Hutton and Sam Ewing singled and Upshaw drilled a pitch off the left field wall to score both runners.

Twins 6, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Rookie righthander Gary Serum, making his first major league start, pitched the Twins to a 6-1 victory over the A's, halting the Twins' losing streak at nine, longest in club's history, and the A's winning skein at eight. Wayne Gross' third-inning homer was the only Oakland run. The Twins scored twice in the third on a walk, single, throwing error and doubles by Bob Randall and Willie Norwood and added a run in the third on Mike Cubbage's sacrifice fly. Rod Carew extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Rangers 3, Indians 1 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers posted their third straight victory, beating the Indians, 3-1, as Mike Hargrove hit a home run for the third consecutive game. The Rangers scored all their runs in the fifth inning. Jim Sundberg tripled to open the frame and, one out later, Bert Campaneris, batting .073, singled in Sundberg. Hargrove followed with his clout into the right field bleachers. The Tribe's tally came in the sixth on successive singles by Buddy Bell, Andre Thornton and Larvell Blanks.

Giants 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Giants broke a four-game losing streak as Willie McCovey drove in four runs and Vida Blue pitched steadily in a 5-3 conquest of the Braves. The veteran first sacker drilled a bases-loaded double in the first frame to plate three tallies and lashed his 496th career homer in the sixth to snap a 3-3 tie. The double followed a walk to Bill Madlock, single by Terry Whitfield and walk to Darrell Evans. The Giants' final run came in the seventh when Blue beat out a bunt, moved to second on Whitfield's single, took third on a wild pitch and came across on a single by Evans. Jeff Burroughs hit a two-run homer for the Braves in the first and the other Brave run was driven in by Barry Bonnell's third-inning single, scoring Jerry Royster.
