Today's scores and summaries:
Blue Jays 9, Angels 3 at California (day game):
Propelled by a 16-hit attack, the Blue Jays defeated the Angels, 9-3. Rico Carty ripped a homer and two singles to drive in pair of runs and Roy Howell knocked in three more with a double and single. Howell's two-run double and Carty's sixth circuit clout of the campaign were the big blows in a five-run second inning.
Orioles 8, White Sox 7 at Chicago (day game):
The winning run scored on a bases-loaded walk as the Orioles outlasted the White Sox, 8-7. With the score tied in the eighth inning, 7-7, Mark Belanger got an infield single to start the inning. Kiko Garcia ran for Belanger and was sacrificed to second. Al Bumbry was hit by a pitch and Rich Dauer bounced an apparent double-play grounder to Mike Eden. But the shortstop bobbled the ball and the bases were loaded. Gary Roenicke then walked to force in Garcia. The Sox had tied the game in the seventh on a homer by Wayne Nordhagen and pinch-single by Bobby Bonds. Ken Singleton was the big hitter for the Orioles, driving in four runs with a single and three-run homer.
Royals 3, Brewers 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Rookie righthander Rich Gale, called up from Omaha to replace Steve Busby, limited the Brewers to six hits over seven innings as the Royals posted a 3-0 victory over the Brewers. Gale developed a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand and gave way to Steve Mingori in the eighth. The reliever held the Brewers hitless over the final two stanzas. The first Royal run came when Willie Wilson was hit by a pitch, stole second and came around to score on two groundouts. Clint Hurdle walked to open the fifth, went to second on a wild pitch and took third on the same play when catcher Charlie Moore threw the ball into center field. Freddie Patek then singled him home. After a single by Frank White, Patek also scored on a suicide squeeze by Jerry Terrell.
Yankees 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
A single by Chris Chambliss in the ninth inning enabled the Yankees to squeak past the Twins, 3-2. Reggie Jackson beat out an infield hit to open the frame and went to second on reliever Mac Scarce's wild throw past first base. Chambliss followed with a line single to center. The Yanks scored twice in the first on a double by Roy White, a wild pitch and singles by Jackson and Chambliss. Bucky Dent's error set up a pair of unearned Twin runs in the seventh.
A's 2, Indians 1 at Oakland (day game):
A homer by Gary Alexander with two out in the ninth gave the A's a 2-1 triumph over the Indians. It was the third time this season that the designated hitter, obtained from the Giants in the Vida Blue deal, had won a game with a ninth-inning round-tripper. Three walks wrapped around a single by Jim Essian netted the A's their other run in the third. The Tribe's tally came in the fifth on a double by Rick Manning and single by Johnny Grubb.
Mariners 4, Tigers 3 at Seattle (day game):
After coming from behind to tie the score in the eighth inning, the Mariners finally prevailed over the Tigers in the 11th, 4-3. Trailing, 3-1, in the eighth, the Mariners tied the game on consecutive doubles by Julio Cruz and Steve Braun and a single by Dan Meyer. Leon Roberts led off the 11th with a double but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Larry Milbourne's single. Milbourne advanced to third on Bob Stinson's single and scored on Cruz's single.
Rangers 2, Red Sox 1 at Texas (day game):
A pinch-single by John Lowenstein in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a two-run rally and gave the Rangers their sixth straight victory, 2-1, over the Red Sox. Bert Campaneris led off the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Al Oliver. Bill Campbell replaced Bill Lee on the mound for the Bosox and was greeted by Richie Zisk's RBI double. Bobby Thompson ran for Zisk and after Toby Harrah was intentionally walked, Thompson scored on Lowenstein's hit to right. The Red Sox' run came in the fourth when Rick Burleson walked, moved to third on Fergie Jenkins' wild pickoff throw and scored on Jim Rice's sacrifice fly.
Cubs 7, Braves 5 at Atlanta (day game):
The Cubs blew a five-run lead but came back to score twice in the eighth inning and subdue the Braves, 7-5. Bobby Murcer led off the eighth with a single and went to third on a single by Steve Ontiveros. Manny Trillo then laced a triple down the right field line to snap the deadlock. The Cubs scored in the first on an infield out by Murcer and added four runs in the second on Ivan DeJesus' RBI single and a three run homer by Greg Gross. The Braves drew to within 5-3 on a two-run homer by Dale Murphy in the second and a solo shot by Rowland Office in the sixth before tying the score in the seventh on an RBI single by Office and sacrifice fly by Jeff Burroughs.
Expos 2, Astros 1 at Houston (day game):
The Expos shaded the Astros, 2-1, as Rudy May, getting effective relief help from Stan Bahnsen, got credit for the victory. Andre Dawson's solo homer gave the Expos a run in the fourth inning and asingle by Ellis Valentine followed by a wild pitch and single by Chris Speler plated what proved to be the winning run in the seventh. Cesar Cedeno led off the Astro ninth with a round-tripper and after the Astros put a runner on second with one out, Bahnsen came on and got the final two outs.
Mets 6, Reds 4 at New York (day game):
Aided by an error, the Mets ended their six-game losing streak with a 6-4 triumph over the Reds. The score was tied, 4-4, in the fourth inning when Joel Youngblood walked to lead off. Doug Flynn singled sharply to left and George Foster was charged with an error when the ball skipped past him to the wall. Youngblood scored and Flynn reached second on the play. After a sacrifice by Pat Zachry, Flynn scored on Lee Mazzilli's bloop double over second base. Pete Rose, within four hits of 3,000 for his career, was halted on his 10-game batting streak.
Phillies 11, Padres 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A pinch-hit grand slam by Davey Johnson climaxed a five-run fifth inning and carried the Phillies to an 11-4 rout of the Padres. After Oscar Gamble's two-run homer in the top of the fifth had tied the game for the Padres at 4-4, the Phils started their uprising with a single by Mike Schmidt and walk to Greg Luzinski. Bob Shirley relieved Randy Jones and after Richie Hebner sacrificed, Garry Maddox was intentionally walked to fill the bases. Bob Boone put the Phils in front with a sacrifice fly and after Jim Morrison walked to reload the bases, Johnson batted for winning pitcher Randy Lerch and cleared the left-center field fence.
Giants 7, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Giants beat the Pirates, 7-3, as Bob Knepper turned in his second complete game of the season and Willie McCovey drove in two runs with a first-inning double.
