Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 9, Orioles 6 at Boston (night game):
A pair of two-run homers by Jim Rice were the big blows as the Red Sox downed the Orioles, 9-6, to snap the Birds' three-game winning streak. Rice's first circuit clout came in the third inning following a single by Jack Brohamer. His second swat came in the seventh after Rick Burleson walked. Fred Lynn contributed a two-run double in a four-run sixth inning.
Yankees 8, Royals 4 at New York (night game):
A four-run outburst in the seventh inning carried the Yankees to an 8-4 triumph over the Royals. With the score tied, 4-4, Willie Randolph led off the decisive frame with a single. One out later, Reggie Jackson drew a walk and Doug Bird replaced Paul Splittorff on the mound for the Royals. Lou Piniella hit Bird's first pitch for a single to left to score Randolph and bring on another reliever, Steve Mingori. Mingori was greeted by Chris Chambliss' single up the middle. When center fielder Willie Wilson misplayed the ball, Chambliss reached third and he scored on Graig Nettles' single. The Royals built up an early lead on Yankee bonehead plays: Piniella throwing to the wrong base; Bucky Dent failing to cover on a runner trapped off base and Randolph falling to cover first on a bunt.
Braves 6, Mets 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Overcoming a three-run deficit in the late innings, the Braves rallied for a 6-5 decision over the Mets. The winning rally came in the eighth when Brian Asselstine led off with a triple and scored the tying run on a single by Jeff Burroughs. Barry Bonnell, the pinch-runner for Burroughs, moved to second on a balk by reliever Skip Lockwood and scored when Biff Pocoroba hit a double into the bullpen. The Mets led, 5-2, entering the bottom of the sixth but Burroughs' sacrifice fly plated a tally in the sixth and Jerry Royster singled home a seventh-inning run. Royster earlier had a double and triple and scored twice. Braves' manager Bobby Cox was ejected from the game in the top of the fifth after getting into an argument with plate umpire Nick Colosi when the Braves' field television flashed a picture of first base umpire Satch Davidson who had made a questionable call on a Braves' infield out in the bottom of the fourth.
Phillies 12, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pounding five pitchers for 16 hits, the Phillies humiliated the Reds, 12-1, as winless Red ace Tom Seaver went down to his third defeat. Steve Carlton, Richie Hebner and Bake McBride paced the assault with three hits apiece. The Phils bunched four singles with three walks while sending 10 batters to the plate during a five-run first inning. The Reds' Pete Rose, hitless in four at-bats, remained four hits shy of the 3,000-hit mark.
Pirates 7, Padres 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates got six runs in their last two turns at bat to overcome the Padres, 7-4. With the score tied, 4-4, in the eighth inning, Rennie Stennett singled and advanced to second when Ed Ott walked. Phil Garner then singled to score Stennett and Jim Bibby, in his first at-bat of the season, singled to score Ott. Garner tallied on Mario Mendoza's forceout. The Pirates rallied for three runs in the seventh on RBI singles by pinch-hitter Willie Stargell and Omar Moreno and an error by Padres' shortstop Ozzie Smith. The Padres got two of their runs on homers by Dave Winfield and the others on RBI hits by Bill Almon and Mike Champion.
Giants 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A wild pitch proved the difference as the Giants edged the Cardinals, 2-1. With the Giants ahead, 1-0, in the eighth, Terry Whitfield opened the inning with a single and went to second on Darrell Evans' sacrifice. Dave Hamilton relieved starter John Denny and walked Willie McCovey, who left the basepaths for pinch-runner Skip James. Mark Littell then replaced Hamilton on the mound and uncorked a wild pitch permitting Whitfield to score from second base. The Cardinals got their run in the eighth when Jerry Mumphrey walked, moved to second on Mike Tyson's single, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout. Randy Moffitt replaced Vida Blue in the ninth after the Cardinals put their first two hitters aboard and retired three straight batsmen. The Giants' first run came in the sixth on Jack Clark's double and Larry Herndon's RBI single. Bill Madlock was thrown out of the game in the ninth by umpire Charlie Williams, working his first major league game behind the plate. The Giant second baseman complained on a called strike and when he was slow getting back into the batter's box, Williams ordered the pitcher to throw the ball and it was a called third strike.
