Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Limiting the Red Sox to their fewest amount of runs in Fenway Park this season, Dennis Martinez pitched the Orioles to a 3-1 victory on a four-hitter. The first Orioles' run came home on Mark Belanger's sacrifice fly in the sixth, but the Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a walk to Carl Yastrzemski and singles by Butch Hobson and Bernie Carbo. Eddie Murray's solo homer in the seventh inning snapped the tie and the Birds added an insurance marker in the eighth on a double by Larry Harlow and single by Lee May.
Tigers 10, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Tigers erupted for five runs in the first inning and went on to a 10-2 romp over the Angels. The game opened with two runs on successive singles by Ron LeFlore, Mark Wagner, Rusty Staub and Jason Thompson. With one out, John Wockenfuss was intentionally walked to get to Lance Parrish. But the Tiger catcher, hitting just .194, laced a double to the left field wall to clear the bases. Milt Wilcox completed his third major league start since 1973.
White Sox 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
A two-out, two-run homer by Lamar Johnson in the eighth inning lifted the White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. The big blow followed a single by Don Kessinger and snapped a 2-2 tie. The Chisox added another run in the ninth on successive singles by Bill Nahorodny, Bob Molinaro and Kessinger. Wilbur Wood pitched a complete game to notch his second win against three losses.
Yankees 4, Royals 2 at New York (night game):
A homer by Lou Piniella with a man on base capped a three-run sixth inning that carried the Yankees to a 4-2 verdict over the Royals and gave Catfish Hunter his first victory of the season. Trailing, 2-1, going into the sixth, the Yanks tied the score on successive one-out doubles by Willie Randolph and Thurman Munson. One out later, Piniella unloaded. Hunter worked the first seven innings and allowed five hits, including back-to-back homers by Hal McRae and Darrell Porter in the fourth.
A's 2, Blue Jays 1 at Oakland (night game):
The A's got only two hits off lefty Tom Underwood but that was all they needed to gain a 2-1 triumph over the Blue Jays. Bill North doubled to lead off the fourth inning, went to third on a sacrifice and scored while Mitchell Page bounced into a double play. Gary Alexander then hit a home run, his fourth game-winning circuit clout of the season. The Blue Jays got their run in the fifth on a walk to Luis Gomez and triple by Rick Bosetti. North, playing out his option, was reinstated to the lineup by A's owner Charlie O. Finley after being kept on the bench since the start of the season.
Indians 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Designated hitter Willie Horton stroked a two-run homer in the seventh inning to trigger the Indians to a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. Horton's round-tripper followed a single by Johnny Grubb and wiped out a 1-0 Mariner lead. The Tribe added two more runs in the eighth on a double by Paul Dade, triple by Rick Manning and sacrifice fly by Buddy Bell. The Mariners' tally came in the fourth on walks to Leon Roberts and Bill Stein, an error by Larvell Blanks and a double play.
Braves 5, Mets 4 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run rally in the last of the ninth inning carried the Braves to a 5-4 decision over the Mets. Trailing, 4-3, the Braves loaded the bases off reliever Bob Myrick when pinch-hitter Cito Gaston drew a walk and Jerry Royster and Barry Bonnell both singled. Jeff Burroughs walked to force in the tying run and Biff Pocoroba then hit the game-winning single up the middle.
Cubs 5, Dodgers 4 at Chicago (day game):
The second double of the game by Manny Trillo scored Rudy Meoli with the winning run to give the Cubs a 5-4 triumph over the Dodgers in 10 innings. Meoli batted for winning pitcher Bruce Sutter to open the 10th and drew a walk. He reached second on Ivan DeJesus' sacrifice bunt before Trillo's hit. The Cubs carried a two-run lead into the top of the ninth, but the Dodgers tied the game on Lee Lacy's two-run pinch-homer. Steve Garvey extended his hitting streak to 21 games, four short of the league record for the start of a season.
Padres 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
An error by third baseman Phil Garner set up the winning margin as the Padres edged the Pirates, 2-1. With the score tied, 1-1, in the sixth, Derrel Thomas led off with a single. Mike Champion then hit what looked liked a sure double play grounder to Garner. But when the third sacker muffed the ball, Thomas reached third on the play and scored when Bob Davis hit into a double play. The Padres' other tally came in the second on a double by Thomas and single by Mike Champion. The Pirates scored in the first when Omar Moreno walked, stole second and came around on Dave Parker's single.
Cardinals 9, Giants 0 at St. Louis (day game):
The Cardinals posted their third shutout in four games as Bob Forsch pitched a five-hitter and defeated the Giants, 9-0. The Card hurler was backed by a 14-hit attack. Keith Hernandez stroked three hits and Jerry Morales batted in two runs and scored another. The victory was Forsch's fourth of the season but his first since being pounded twice after pitching a no-hitter against the Phillies April 16.
