Red Sox 8, Twins 1 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice supported the four-hit pitching of Dennis Eckersley with two triples, driving in three runs, as the Red Sox trimmed the Twins, 8-1. The Red Sox scored three runs in the first inning on a double by Rick Burleson, Jerry Remy's single, a triple by Rice and Carl Yastrzemski's sacrifice fly. It was the first victory for Eckersley and only the third complete game for the Bosox.
Mets 8, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Mets scored three runs in the fourth inning on four walks and one hit, then went on to defeat the Braves, 8-2, behind the seven-hit pitching of Jerry Koosman. A two-run single by John Stearns was the only hit of the inning. Bobby Valentine hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Dodgers 4, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
With Rick Rhoden scattering six hits and Reggie Smith hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, the Dodgers polished off the Cubs, 4-1, to take the series, two games to one. Smith also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, following Davey Lopes' triple.
