Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 15, Orioles 9 at Baltimore (day game):
A blistering 18-hit attack led by Mike Cubbage, who drove in four runs with a triple, double and single, carried the Twins to a 15-9 thumping of the Orioles. Three Oriole errors and three walks followed by an RBI single by Cubbage gave the Twins four runs in the first inning. The Twins added two more in the second with Rod Carew contributing a run-scoring single and Cubbage delivering triple. After Cubbage's three-base hit, Bird starter Jim Palmer was relieved.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
Notching his first shutout and fourth victory of the season, Mike Torrez pitched the Red Sox to a 5-0 verdict over the White Sox. Jim Rice continued his torrid hitting, smashing a two-run homer in the first inning. Carl Yastrzemski belted a two-run round-tripper in the third and the Bosox got another tally on an RBI single by Butch Hobson. The White Sox' scoreless streak was extended to a club-record 23 innings.

Angels 16, Indians 3 at California (day game):
Completing the three-game sweep of the series, the Angels pounded out 21 hits in routing the Indians, 16-3. Six consecutive singles in the second inning sent Tribe starter Rick Waits to an early shower. The Angels entered the series with a .225 team batting average but feasted off Indian hurling, collecting 41 hits in the three games. Indian first baseman Wayne Cage homered in the fourth inning for his first major league hit.

Royals 8, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (day game):
A three-run eruption in the sixth inning propelled the Royals to an 8-6 victory over the Brewers. Darrell Porter led off the sixth with a single and after the next two men were retired, Freddie Patek belted a double down the right field line to drive home Porter. Joe Zdeb followed with a single to score Patek and went to second on the throw to the plate. Zdeb then tallied on Hal McRae's single.

Yankees 3, Rangers 2 at New York (day game):
A Helmet Day crowd of 53,829 -- largest in the majors this year -- saw the Yankees beat the Rangers, 3-2, on a 12th-inning home run by Chris Chambliss. The Yanks got two runs in the second stanza on Graig Nettles' homer coming with Chambliss aboard on second baseman Bump Wills' error. The Rangers tied the game in the sixth when Wills was hit by a pitch, Al Oliver followed with an RBI double and Richie Zisk punched a single. Rich Gossage picked up his second win, firing four innings of hitless relief and striking out five.

Tigers 4, A's 0 at Oakland (day game):
With Milt Wilcox tossing a five-hitter, the Tigers extended the A's scoreless streak to 20 innings in applying a 4-0 whitewash. The Tigers' Trammell hit his first major league homer in the third inning and Jason Thompson blasted a two-run shot in the sixth.

Mariners 9, Blue Jays 7 at Seattle (day game):
A two-run triple by Bruce Bochte and two-run homer by Leon Roberts broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning and enabled the Mariners to top the Blue Jays, 9-7. The Mariners had a 5-1 lead going into the top of the eighth but the Jays tied the game on Rick Bosetti's first grand slam homer of his major league career. Mariner starter Dick Pole pitched perfect ball for 6 1/3 innings, but Bob Bailor ended the string with a solo homer.

Giants 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Gaining credit for his fourth straight victory after an opening loss, Vida Blue, with relief help from Randy Moffitt and Gary Lavelle, pitched the Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Willie McCovey drove in both Giants' runs. The first came in the third inning when Terry Whitfield walked, took third on Darrell Evans' single and scored on McCovey's infield out. Whitfield singled in the fifth, moved to second when Evans walked and came around on a single by McCovey. The Cubs, held hitless until two were out in the sixth, scored in that frame when Ivan DeJesus singled, Manny Trillo walked and Bill Buckner singled. Blue was removed with one out and a runner on first in the ninth. Moffitt retired Dave Kingman on a pop fly and was replaced by Lavelle, who struck out Bobby Murcer to end the game.

[DH] Expos 19, Reds 5 (day game) / Reds 4, Expos 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Tying the Montreal club record for scoring, the Expos crushed the Reds, 19-5, in the opener of a doubleheader as Andre Dawson, Ellis Valentine and Tony Perez cracked homers to spark a 20-hit attack. The Reds capitalized on a pair of errors by Larry Parrish to score three unearned runs in the nightcap and gain a split, 4-2. The Expos led, 2-1 in the sixth inning of the second game when George Foster led off with a single. Parrish, after fielding Johnny Bench's grounder, threw the ball away trying for the forceout at second, putting runners on first and third. A walk to Dave Concepcion loaded the bases. Foster scored and the runners moved up on Don Werner's long fly. After Bench was out at the plate on Junior Kennedy's grounder, Parrish let catcher Gary Carter's attempted pickoff throw to third get past him for an error, enabling Concepcion and Kennedy to score. The Reds' Pete Rose sat out the second contest, ending his consecutive game streak at 678.

Phillies 8, Mets 5 at Philadelphia (day game):
A pair of homers by Greg Luzinski, who drove in four runs for the second straight game, and solo shots by Bob Boone and Richie Hebner powered the Phillies to an 8-5 decision over the Mets. Luzinski hit a two-run double in the third inning and then tied the score at 5-5 with a bases-empty homer in the fifth. After Boone put the Phillies in front with a solo homer in the sixth, Luzinski drove in another tally in the seventh with a sacrifice fly and Hebner accounted for the Phillies' final run with a round-tripper.

Pirates 6, Dodgers 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Chipping away at Tommy John for nine hits and six runs in six innings, the Pirates handed the Dodger hurler his first setback of the season, 6-4. Bill Robinson singled in Omar Moreno for a run in the first inning and the Pirates added two more in the second when Jim Rooker singled in Phil Garner after the latter's double had plated Rennie Stennett. Garner's fielder's choice grounder accounted for a run in the third and Dave Parker had a two-run single in the sixth. The Dodgers scored a run in the seventh on four walks and added three more in the ninth on Bill Russell's RBI single and two-run homer by Reggie Smith.

Cardinals 8, Padres 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Rallying from an early deficit, the Cardinals scored four times in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Padres, 8-4. Trailing, 3-2, Ted Simmons began the Cards' fifth with a one-out double and scored the tying run on singles by Jerry Morales and Ken Reitz. When Tony Scott singled to load the bases, Dave Freisleben was replaced on the mound by Mark Lee. Jerry Mumphrey hit a dribbler in front of the plate which Lee fielded and tossed to catcher Rick Sweet. But Sweet dropped the ball for an error as Morales slid in with the go-ahead run. After a forceout at the plate, Garry Templeton brought home Scott and Mumphrey with a single. Bob Forsch survived a shaky start to notch his fifth win of the campaign.
