Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Royals 3 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox posted their seventh straight victory, edging the Royals, 4-3. The Sox built a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Rick Burleson and Jerry Remy, but the Royals tied the game in the seventh when Clint Hurdle was hit by a pitch and Amos Otis followed with a homer. Remy led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and Jim Rice then blasted his 10th circuit clout of the season. The Royals' final run resulted from a passed ball. The Red Sox upped their home record to 16-3.
Indians 5, Mariners 4 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians took advantage of Mariners' errors to erase a 4-1 deficit and come away with a 5-4 triumph. With two out in the Tribe seventh, Mariner shortstop Craig Reynolds let Duane Kuiper's grounder go through him to permit one run to score and his wild throw on pinch-hitter Paul Dade's grounder let the Indians' third and fourth runs cross the plate to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, the Indians scored the game-winner when Larvell Blanks singled, advanced to second on a walk and scored on Mike Vail's liner over third with two out.
Angels 7, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Ron Fairly's third RBI single, coming in the eighth inning, broke a 5-5 tie and the Angels went on to prevail over the Tigers, 7-5. The Tigers had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, knocking out Angel ace Frank Tanana. Aurelio Rodriguez doubled and scored on Ron LeFlore's single. Dave LaRoche replaced Tanana and yielded a single to Rusty Staub that scored LeFlore, who had stolen second. Jason Thompson's double then scored Staub. Fairly singled home a run in the fifth and scored on Tony Solaita's home run. Fairly also singled home a run in the sixth. In the Angels' eighth, Rick Miller walked, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on Lyman Bostock's groundout before Fairly pushed a slow ball up the middle for the tie-breaking hit.
Rangers 7, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
With Fergie Jenkins tossing his third complete game in as many starts and Al Oliver collecting four RBIs, the Rangers breezed past the Brewers, 7-1. Sixto Lezcano's homer gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Rangers scored twice in the third on singles by Bert Campaneris and Juan Beniquez, a sacrifice fly by Richie Zisk and single by Jim Sundberg. Oliver singled home the Rangers' third run in the sixth and slammed a homer in the eighth after singles by Zisk and Sundberg.
Yankees 3, Twins 1 at New York (night game):
Making his best showing of the season, Catfish Hunter pitched one-hit ball for six innings as the Yankees picked up a 3-1 verdict over the Twins. Graig Nettles gave the Yanks a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a homer. Two runs followed in the fourth on a homer by Reggie Jackson and consecutive doubles by Nettles and Jim Spencer. Hunter retired the last 10 batters he faced. Sparky Lyle took over in the seventh. The Twins' run followed a 31-minute rain delay and came when Butch Wynegar tripled and scored on Jose Morales' pinch-hit single.
Blue Jays 4, A's 0 at Toronto (night game):
Brilliant pitching by Tom Underwood extended Oakland's scoreless streak to 29 innings as the Blue Jays beat the A's, 4-0. It was the lefthander's first A. L. win. The Jays scored a run in the first on a leadoff double by Rick Bosetti and single by Willie Upshaw. Bosetti singled in another run in the third and Bob Bailor delivered two runs with a double in the fifth.
[DH] Braves 3, Expos 2 (night game) / Expos 7, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Brian Asselstine with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a two-run rally and lifted the Braves to a 3-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Expos came back to win the second game, 7-6, when Gary Carter hit a three-run homer with two out in ninth. The Braves' winning spurt in the opener started when Darrel Chaney led off with a double, went to third on a bunt single by Jerry Royster and scored when Montreal reliever Bill Atkinson threw wildly past first. Royster, who had moved to second on the error, advanced to third after two straight walks and then raced home on Asselstine's game-winner. Carter's round-tripper in the nightcap came after Larry Parrish and Chris Speier both singled with two outs. The Braves took a 6-4 lead into the ninth thanks to the hitting of Jeff Burroughs, who lifted his league-leading average to .416 with a two-run homer and single.
Reds 7, Mets 6 at Cincinnati (night game):
A pair of homers enabled the Reds to overtake the Mets and win a 7-6 squeaker in 10 innings. With the Reds trailing, 6-5, George Foster hit a homer in the ninth to tie the game and Dan Driessen then led off the 10th with a homer to produce the victory. The Mets had opened up an early 5-1 lead, but a two-run single by Johnny Bench keyed a three-run rally in the fifth that brought the Reds within 5-4.
Dodgers 3, Cardinals 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
With Doug Rau notching his fifth consecutive victory and Reggie Smith cracking a homer, the Dodgers eased past the Cardinals, 3-1. Smith's solo round-tripper came in the first inning, but the Cards tied the game in the second when Ken Reitz blasted a homer. The Dodgers went ahead in the third when Davey Lopes singled, advanced to second on a balk, to third on a groundout and scored on Ron Cey's sacrifice fly. L. A. added another run in the fourth when Dusty Baker doubled, advanced to third on Steve Yeager's single and tallied on Rau's sacrifice bunt. Terry Forster relieved Rau with one out in the eighth and pitched out of a bases loaded jam.
Astros 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A homer and triple by Cesar Cedeno paced an attack that supported the four-hit 11-strikeout pitching by J.R. Richard as the Astros whipped the Phillies, 5-1. Cedeno's circuit clout came in the first inning and was matched in the sixth by the Phils' Bake McBride. Cedeno led off the seventh with his triple and scored on a one-out infield single by Bob Watson. Singles by Art Howe and Joe Ferguson scored Watson to make it 3-1. Terry Puhl then singled home two more runs after an intentional walk to Roger Metzger.
Cubs 8, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
Ending their four-game losing streak, the Cubs pounded out an 8-5 victory over the Padres. Larry Cox hit a two-run homer to get the Cubs moving in the fifth inning and they added two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth. A two-run triple by Joe Wallis highlighted the eighth-inning outburst. Gene Tenace hit two round-trippers for the Padres.
Giants 3, Pirates 2 at San Francisco (night game):
After Jack Clark's circus catch had saved the game in the top of the ninth, the Giants pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning to nip the Pirates, 3-2. The Pirates, who were trailing, 2-0, going into the last inning, tied the score after one out. Ed Ott, Phil Garner and pinch-hitter Rennie Stennett singled to cut the Frisco lead to 2-1. After Jim Fregosi flied out, pinch-hitter Steve Brye singled Garner home with the tying tally. Omar Moreno then hit a deep drive to right that Clark caught to prevent the Pirates from forging ahead. The winning marker for the Giants came when Clark beat out a bunt with one out, stole second, continued to third on catcher Ott's bad throw and scored on Larry Herndon's line single to center. The first two Giant runs were driven in by Willie McCovey on an infield out and a single.
