Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
The major league leader in homers, Jim Rice blasted No. 11 to trigger the Red Sox to a 5-4 victory over the Orioles. Rice's round-tripper came in the third inning with Jerry Remy aboard. The other Sox scores came in the second inning when Fred Lynn tripled and came home on Dwight Evans' sacrifice fly and in the ninth on Bernie Carbo's RBI single and an error by Oriole shortstop Kiko Garcia. The Orioles rallied in the ninth, but Dick Drago came on to pitch out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation. The reliever got Eddie Murray on a sacrifice fly, gave up a run-scoring single to Lee May and then retired Gary Roenicke on a fly ball. Rice's home run was the 13th of his career against the Orioles and boosted his league-leading RBI total to 36.

Cardinals 2, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Becoming the first six-game winner in the majors this season, Bob Forsch hurled a three-hitter as the Cardinals blanked the Dodgers, 2-0. Ted Simmons broke the scoreless tie with a homer off Burt Hooton in the seventh inning. The Redbirds added their second run in the eighth on consecutive singles by Ken Reitz, Tony Scott and Mike Tyson. It was Forsch's third shutout of the season, a major league high.

Mets 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
With Bobby Valentine driving in two runs, the Mets edged the Expos, 3-2. The Expos led, 2-1, going into the sixth inning when Willie Montanez singled and took second and third on consecutive wild pitches by Wayne Twitchell. After John Stearns walked, Valentine bounced into a fielder's choice, scoring Montanez. In the eighth inning, Steve Henderson walked, advanced to third on a single by Stearns and scored on Valentine's single. Elliott Maddox tripled home Lenny Randle in the third inning. The Expos' runs came on an RBI single by Warren Cromartie in the third and RBI double by Larry Parrish in the fourth.

Phillies 4, Reds 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton outdueled Tom Seaver as the Phillies posted a 4-1 triumph over the Reds. Doubles by Richie Hebner and Tim McCarver gave the Phils a 1-0 lead in the second inning and Greg Luzinski made it 2-0 with a homer in the third. Hebner hit a triple, following singles by Mike Schmidt and Luzinski, to give the Phils two more tallies in the eighth. The Reds' only run came on consecutive singles by Georg eFoster, Johnny Bench and Dave Concepcion in the sixth. Carlton's nine strikeouts raised his career total to 2,337 and moved him past Early Wynn into 19th place on the all-time major league list.

Cubs 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
Getting two runs in the ninth, the Cubs prevailed, 4-3, over the Padres. Bobby Murcer opened the ninth with a single. After Manny Trillo struck out, Steve Ontiveros drew a walk and Dave Freisleben relieved Mark Lee on the mound for the Padres. Freisleben walked Joe Wallis to load the bases and was replaced by Dan Spillner when the count went to 3-0 on pinch-hitter Larry Biittner. The fourth ball to Biittner forced in Murcer with the tying run. Pinch-hitter Rudy Meoli then hit a ball into short left for a single to score Ontiveros. The Padres had gone ahead in the eighth when Cub reliever Bruce Sutter walked pinch-hitter Rick Sweet with the bases loaded.

Giants 6, Pirates 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Triples by Jack Clark and Willie McCovey sparked a three-run third inning, while Bob Knepper hurled a six-hitter to give the Giants a 6-2 decision over the Pirates. Clark's three-bagger scored Bill Madlock, who had doubled, and McCovey then drove in Clark with a shot off the right-center field fence Mike Ivie followed McCovey's hit with a single, ending the afternoon for Pirate starter John Candelaria. The Pirate runs were unearned, the result of consecutive errors by McCovey and Madlock in the fourth inning.
