Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 7, Orioles 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Jumping on reliever Don Stanhouse for three runs in the eighth inning, the Indians defeated the Orioles, 7-5. Stanhouse, who was the fifth hurler used by the Orioles, walked Johnny Grubb to open the stanza. Larry Lintz, newly signed by the Indians, ran for Grubb, stole second and scored on a double by Andre Thornton. After Ron Hassey flied out, Duane Kuiper doubled to drive in Thornton before scoring himself on a single by Tom Veryzer.

Tigers 7, Red Sox 5 at Detroit (night game):
With a crowd of 48,817 on hand, the first-place Tigers stood off the Red Sox, 7-5, in a battle for East division leadership. Jim Rice smashed a two-run homer for the Red Sox in the first inning, but the Tigers erupted for four runs in the third. Ron LeFlore singled, stole second and scored on a single by Lou Whitaker. Rusty Staub followed with a homer to put the Tigers ahead, 3-2. Jason Thompson then walked and raced home when a bunt single by Steve Kemp was misplayed by both Butch Hobson and Dwight Evans. The Tigers, however, did not put the game away until the eighth when they added their final three runs on a walk to Kemp, singles by Milt May and Tim Corcoran and double by Alan Trammell. The Red Sox rallied in the ninth, chasing Bob Sykes when Evans hit a two-run homer. Bob Bailey greeted John Hiller with another homer but the reliever then retired the side to save Sykes' third straight victory.

Twins 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Bombo Rivera rapped four straight hits, capping his big night with a homer in the eighth inning for the Twins' clinching run in a 5-3 victory over the Royals. Hal McRae homered for the Royals in the first and George Brett, back in action for the first time since April 29, stroked a pair of doubles and counted the Royals' other runs for a 3-0 lead. The Twins ralled to tie the score with the aid of an RBI single by Rivera and went ahead in the seventh when Dan Ford tripled and Jose Morales hit a sacrifice fly. Rivera's homer iced it.

Angels 7, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Backed by a 14-hit attack, Frank Tanana became a seven-game winner when the Angels defeated the Brewers, 7-1. The southpaw gave up nine hits with the Brewers' only run coming on a homer by Sixto Lezcano. Carney Lansford drove in two of the Angels' markers with a double, Lyman Bostock accounted for a pair with a bases-loaded single and Terry Humphrey produced two with a sacrifice fly and double.

White Sox 6, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Batting sixth, seventh and eighth, Bob Molinaro, Eric Soderholm and Henry Cruz provided the scoring punch as the White Sox defeated the A's, 6-2. In the fourth inning, Molinaro batted in two runs with a single and Soderholm accounted for a third marker with an infield out. Cruz homered in the seventh and Soderholm delivered the final two Chicago runs with a double in the ninth.

[DH] Mariners 6, Rangers 5 (night game) / Rangers 4, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Jim Sundberg stretched his hitting streak to a club-record 19 games as the Rangers split a twi-night doubleheader with the Mariners. After the Mariners won the opener, 6-5, the Rangers came back to take the nightcap, 4-2. In the first game, a run-scoring double by Sundberg in the third inning helped the Rangers assume a 4-0 lead, but the Mariners rallied and went in front, 5-4, before Bobby Bonds tied the score in the ninth with his first homer in a Texas uniform. In the Mariners' half, Juan Bernhardt doubled and scored the winning run on a pinch-single by Leon Roberts. Sundberg had two hits in the nightcap. Juan Beniquez and Bump Wills homered for the Rangers, who broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning on a double by Jim Mason, single by Mike Hargrove, sacrifice fly by Al Oliver and single by Richie Zisk.

Yankees 11, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
The Yankees erupted for six runs in the third inning, sending 10 men to bat, and rolled over the Blue Jays, 11-3. Mickey Rivers, back in the Yankees' starting lineup after being benched for four games, ignited the outburst with a single. Jesse Jefferson, on the mound for the Blue Jays, walked Willie Randoph, hit Reggie Jackson with a pitch and passed Chris Chambliss to force in the first run. Graig Nettles singled in another to tie the score at 2-2. A balk by reliever Mike Willis sent the Yankees ahead. Lou Piniella then drove in two runs with a double and Bucky Dent capped the inning with a single for the sixth counter. Chambliss homered with two men on base in the fourth and Dent hit his first homer of the year in the fifth.

Cubs 6, Cardinals 2 at Chicago (day game):
Two triples by Greg Gross, another by Bobby Murcer and a homer by Ivan DeJesus led the Cubs to a 6-2 victory over the Cardinals, who went down to their eighth straight defeat. Dave Roberts, starting for the first time this season, gained the victory, limiting the Cards to six hits in seven innings, before Willie Hernandez came in to finish the game.

Reds 4, Padres 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Consecutive homers by Joe Morgan and George Foster with two out in the seventh inning carried the Reds to a 4-3 victory over the Padres. Morgan's blow came off Bob Owchinko and brought Rollie Fingers to the mound for the Padres. Foster smashed the reliever's first pitch for the game-winning drive. The homer was the first given up by Fingers this season.

Astros 6, Braves 0 at Houston (night game):
The first Astros' batter to collect four hits in one game this season, Enos Cabell led the attack in support of Floyd Bannister as the lefthander shut out the Braves, 6-0, for his first victory of the season. Cabell rapped four singles in as many trips and drove in three runs.

Giants 10, Dodgers 7 at Los Angeles (night game):
The batting of Bill Madlock, Mike Sadek and Darrell Evans offset a pair of three-run homers by Rick Monday and enabled the Giants to defeat the Dodgers, 10-7, for their eighth straight victory. Madlock drove in four runs, including three with a homer. Sadek had two singles and accounted for three RBIs. Evans contributed a pair of homers to the Giants' attack.

Pirates 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Smashing three homers in the fourth inning for all their runs, the Pirates defeated the Expos, 5-3. Omar Moreno walked and Dave Parker followed with the first homer. After a single by Manny Sanguillen, Phil Garner and Steve Brye connected for the circuit in succession. Don Robinson gained his fourth victory in five decisions, but the rookie was replaced in the ninth after Tony Perez homered for the Expos. Grant Jackson in relief retired one batter and Kent Tekulve set down the last two.

Mets 4, Phillies 3 at New York (night game):
Tug McGraw's mastery of his former teammates came to an end when the Mets rallied to defeat the Phillies, 4-3. McGraw, who had held the Mets scoreless for 22 1/3 innings since May 27, 1976, relieved Jim Kaat in the eighth inning after the Phillies had taken a 3-0 lead. The Mets promptly tied the score with the aid of an error by Mike Schmidt. Then, in the ninth, Bruce Boisclair hit a pinch-double and Lenny Randle beat out a bunt. After Joel Youngblood forced Randle, Boisclair holding third, McGraw walked Steve Henderson intentionally to load the bases. Willie Montanez then bounced a grounder over McGraw's head for an infield hit, scoring Boisclair with the winning run.
