Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 2, Rangers 0 at Minnesota (night game):
With Geoff Zahn and Mike Marshall combining on a seven-hitter, the Twins gained a 2-0 whitewash over the Rangers. The first Twin run came in the opening frame when Willie Norwood doubled, advanced to third on Rod Carew's bunt single and scored when Dan Ford forced Carew at second. The other tally came in the second on a walk to Bombo Rivera, single by Roy Smalley and a forceout. Marshall pitched out of an eighth-inning jam to gain his fourth save since joining the club a week ago. Jim Sundberg got two singles to stretch his consecutive game hitting streak to 22, longest in the major leagues this season.
Mariners 10, Royals 1 at Seattle (night game):
Taking advantage of two Kansas City errors and three wild pitches, the Mariners sailed to a 10-1 thumping of the Royals. A walk, two fielder's choice grounders, an error and a triple by Larry Milbourne produced three second-inning runs. Bruce Bochte hit a solo homer to increase the lead to 4-0 in the third. Four more tallies were added in the fourth. Ruppert Jones led off with a double and Juan Bernhardt hit an RBI single. Milbourne reached first on an error by shortstop Freddie Patek and a double by Julio Cruz produced another run. When the throw from K. C. left fielder Willie Wilson was wild to second base, both Bernhardt and Cruz scored. Three wild pitches by Doug Bird, one short of the A. L. record for one inning, gave the Mariners two more runs in the eighth.
Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
A three-run homer by Carl Yastrzemski enabled the Red Sox to come from behind and defeat the Blue Jays, 5-4. With the Sox trailing, 3-2, Rick Burleson singled with one out in the eighth. Jerry Remy forced Burleson at second but Jim Rice kept the rally alive with a single. Yastrzemski then belted a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence. The Jays had assumed the lead on two round-trippers by John Mayberry, a two-run blast in the first frame and solo shot in the sixth. Rookie righthander Allen Ripley received credit for his first major league victory, pitching seven innings.
Reds 10, Braves 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Combining with Pedro Borbon on a five-hitter, Bill Bonham got credit for his fifth straight win as the Reds blanked the Braves, 10-0. A homer by Ken Griffey accounted for two of the three runs scored by the Reds in the first inning. A single by George Foster and double by Dave Concepcion accounted for the third run. The Reds got four in the eighth on an RBI double by Cesar Geronimo and three-run homer by Ray Knight.
Expos 5, Pirates 2 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos ended their four-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Pirates. A double by Ellis Valentine scored Dave Cash, who had singled, and Gary Carter, who had walked, in the first inning. Chris Speier stroked an RBI single in the fifth and the Expos added two more tallies in the eighth on Tony Perez' double and Warren Cromartie's single. Steve Rogers pitched no-hit ball for 7 1/3 innings but weakened in the eighth and was replaced by Darold Knowles, who earned his second save of the season.
Dodgers 8, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Pinch-hitter Manny Mota's three-run double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning highlighted a seven-run explosion as the Dodgers thumped the Padres, 8-1. With one out in the Dodger eighth and the score tied, 1-1, Dusty Baker singled and Lee Lacy doubled. Steve Yeager drew an intentional walk to load the sacks and Mota, batting for winning pitcher Don Sutton, followed with a bases-clearing two-base hit. The Dodgers scored four more runs in the inning to turn the game into a rout.
