Orioles 2, Tigers 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A pair of homers lifted the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. Larry Harlow clouted a round-tripper in the third inning and Lee May broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth with a belt over the left field fence. The Tigers' lone tally came on a homer by Lance Parrish in the seventh frame. Scott McGregor pitched his third straight complete game.
Angels 6, White Sox 0 at California (night game):
Handing the White Sox their eighth shutout of the season, the Angels posted a 6-0 victory and moved a half-game ahead of the A's in the A.L. West. Frank Tanana became the first eight-game winner in the major leagues. The Angels got four runs in the first inning. After Bobby Grich and Dave Chalk were both hit by pitches to open the inning, Ron Fairly blooped a double to left for two tallies. A walk to Tony Solaita and one-out single by Lyman Bostock produced a third marker before Rick Miller's two-out single capped the outburst.
Rangers 7, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Posting his fourth complete game, Fergie Jenkins scattered seven hits as the Rangers coasted to a 7-1 victory over the Twins.Richie Zisk drove in the Rangers' first two runs with singles in the first and sixth innings. A double by John Lowenstein capped a five-run eighth frame. In that inning, a double by Bump Wills drove in one run and a sacrifice fly by Jim Sundberg another.
Yankees 9, Indians 3 at New York (night game):
Posting their 19th victory in the last 25 games, the Yankees scalped the Indians, 9-3. The Yankees jumped to a 3-0 lead in their second turn at bat when they put together four hits, including an RBI double by Cliff Johnson and two-run single by Bucky Dent. Three more runs followed in the third on singles by Mickey Rivers, Willie Randolph, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson and a fielder's choice grounder by Lou Piniella. Dick Tidrow evened his record at 3-3 in going the distance for the second time this season.
Royals 9, Mariners 4 at Seattle (day game):
Mounting a 13-hit assault, the Royals sank the Mariners, 9-4. After the teams traded runs in the second inning on a homer by Darrell Porter and RBI single by Bruce Bochte, a two-run triple by George Brett in the third stanza vaulted the Royals into a 3-1 margin. A double by Ruppert Jones in the bottom half of the frame narrowed the gap to one run, but the Royals blew the contest apart in the fourth. With the bases filled and none out, Amos Otis' bad-hop single produced two runs. A third scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae drove in the fourth tally.
Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (night game):
The Red Sox used the long ball to shoot down the Blue Jays, 9-5. The scoring opened in the second inning when Dwight Evans hit a two-run homer. After the Jays tied the score, the Sox took the lead for keeps in the fifth on a three-run round-tripper by Jim Rice. The circuit clout broke an 0-for-11 slump for the Bosox slugger and was preceded by singles by Fred Kendall and Jerry Remy.
Cubs 5, Phillies 1 at Chicago (day game):
Tightening their grip on first place in the N. L. East, the Cubs notched a 5-1 triumph over the Phillies. The Cubs scored two runs in the first inning. Bill Buckner drove in one with a single and Dave Kingman added the other with a triple. A single by Manny Trillo plated a tally in the third and Trillo blasted a solo homer in the sixth. The Cubs' last run came in the eighth on a walk to Trillo and triple by Steve Ontiveros. Starting pitcher Rick Reuschel had to leave the game because of stiffness in his right elbow. Bruce Sutter finished up to earn his sixth save of the season.
Mets 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-out single by Lenny Randle in the 11th inning drove in the winning run as the Mets edged the Pirates, 3-2. The run was set up when Pirate third baseman Phil Garner booted a grounder by Dale Murray, who then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Randle delivered his decisive hit. The Mets had tied the game in the sixth on a two-out, two-run double by Willie Montanez that scored Elliott Maddox, aboard on a fielder's choice, and Lee Mazzilli, who had singled.
Giants 9, Astros 1 at San Francisco (day game):
With Jack Clark extending his hitting streak to 15 games and driving in four runs, the Giants romped over the Astros, 9-1, completing the three-game series sweep. The Giants made the most of four Houston errors. Ed Halicki, who missed the first month with a rib injury, picked up his first victory of the season. The Astros' Terry Puhl extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the eighth inning.
Expos 11, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Taking advantage of sandlot play on the part of the Cardinals, the Expos breezed to an 11-2 victory. The Expos scored seven unearned runs, five of them coming in the third inning on just one hit. That inning began when shortstop Garry Templeton threw a grounder by Larry Parrish into the stands for a two-base error. Ross Grimsley was hit by a pitch and Dave Cash moved the runners along with a sacrifice. Chris Speier was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Del Unser grounded to Keith Hernandez, but the first baseman's throw home was high and Parrish scored. A single by Gary Carter drove in Grimsley. When right fielder Jim Dwyer's throw went through the infield and was mishandled by pitcher John Urrea, two more runs scored. Carter went to third on the error and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ellis Valentine. Templeton's second error of the game led to two more unearned runs in the fourth frame.
