Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Indians 3 at Baltimore (night game):
After tying the score with a homer in the eighth inning, Billy Smith knocked in the Orioles' winning run with a double in the ninth to beat the Indians, 4-3. Smith also had another double earlier in the game. In his last 11 official at-bats, Smith had rapped nine hits. The Indians staked Rick Wise to a 3-0 lead before the Orioles began their comeback with two runs in the fifth on a single by Lee May, double by Mark Belanger and single by Terry Crowley.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 3 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice hit a two-run homer and Dwight Evans added a pair of solo shots to carry the Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Rusty Staub homered for the Tigers in the fourth inning and doubled ahead of a circuit clout by Jason Thompson in the sixth when the Tigers tied the score at 3-3. The Red Sox broke away in their half with two runs on a double by Jack Brohamer, walk to Evans, singles by Fred Kendall and Rick Burleson and infield out by Jerry Remy.

Angels 6, Brewers 5 at California (night game):
With two out in the seventh inning, pinch-runner Rance Mulliniks raced home from first base on a pinch-single by Tony Solaita to bring the Angels a 6-5 victory over the Brewers. Mulliniks ran for Merv Rettenmund, who reached base on a pass. Sal Bando hit a three-run homer in the fifth, putting the Brewers ahead, 4-3, but the Angels tied the score in their half and took the lead in the sixth when Lyman Bostock hit his first homer in a California uniform. The Brewers came back to knot the count with a circuit clout by Ben Oglivie in the seventh.

A's 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Posting their first victory in three games under Jack McKeon as new manager, the A's got combined six-hit pitching from Alan Wirth and Bob Lacey and defeated the White Sox, 3-1. The A's counted twice in the fourth inning. Mitchell Page singled, stole second and advanced to third while Glenn Burke was safe on an error by Lamar Johnson. Page scored on an infield out by Mario Guerrero and Burke followed across the plate on a single by Dave Revering. Bill Nahorodny homered for the White Sox in the sixth before the A's added an insurance counter on a single by Wayne Gross, a sacrifice and a double by Gary Thomasson in the seventh.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3 at New York (night game):
When the Blue Jays changed pitchers with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Jim Spencer came up as a pinch-hitter for Cliff Johnson and unloaded a grand slam to power the Yankees to a 4-3 victory. Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss singled and Graig Nettles walked before Blue Jays' starter Jerry Garvin yielded the mound to Tom Murphy, who served up Spencer's smash. John Mayberry accounted for the Blue Jays' markers with a pair of homers.

Mariners 6, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Julio Cruz and Craig Reynolds batted in two runs apiece to pace the Mariners to a 6-4 victory over the Rangers. Cruz accounted for his RBIs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning and another run followed on a sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte to put the Mariners ahead, 3-2. After the Rangers tied the score, the Mariners came back with two runs in the seventh. Bill Stein singled and, after a sacrifice, Cruz walked. Reynolds singled, scoring Stein, and Ruppert Jones also singled to drive in Cruz. Reynolds hit another single in the eighth to produce an insurance marker. Juan Beniquez homered for the Rangers.

Braves 4, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Phillies were held to six hits by Phil Niekro and lost to the Braves, 4-2, for the eighth defeat in 10 games on their road trip. Biff Pocoroba started the Braves' scoring with a double in the second inning and crossed the plate on a single by Niekro. Barry Bonnell walked in the third and scored on a triple by Gary Matthews. Another pass to Bonnell and singles by Matthews and Jeff Burroughs added a run in the fifth before the Phillies picked up their pair in the eighth when Davey Johnson was hit by a pitch and Jerry Martin homered as a pinch-hitter.

Astros 5, Mets 4 at Houston (night game):
An injury to Bob Watson's right hand forced manager Bill Virdon to make two lineup changes and both paid off when Jesus Alou and Jose Cruz smashed homers to account for all of the Astros' runs in a 5-4 victory over the Mets. Virdon put Cruz at first base in Watson's place and inserted Alou in left field, batting cleanup. Alou hit his first homer in the majors since 1974, connecting in the third inning after Terry Puhl, batting safely in his 17th straight game, beat out a bunt and Julio Gonzalez singled. After Willie Montanez drove in three runs with a homer and single to tie the score, Enos Cabell singled in the sixth and Cruz hit for the circuit.

Pirates 2, Expos 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Although allowing only four hits, Steve Rogers came out a loser when Rennie Stennett singled in the seventh inning and Manny Sanguillen homered to give the Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Expos. Sanguillen's blow wiped out the lead the Expos had taken on a circuit clout by Larry Parrish in the top half of the seventh. The Expos threatened against John Candelaria in the eighth before Kent Tekulve came in to save the game.

Reds 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Tom Seaver, with eighth-inning help from Doug Bair, gained his fourth victory of the season, balancing his record at 4-4, when the Reds defeated the Padres, 3-1. A double by Pete Rose in the first and another by Dave Concepcion in the second led to the Reds' first two runs. Seaver gave way to Bair with two out in the eighth after the Padres scored on singles by Derrel Thomas, Bill Almon and Oscar Gamble. Johnny Bench iced the Reds' victory with a homer in the ninth.

Giants 6, Dodgers 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Backed by the hitting of Willie McCovey, who drove in five runs, Bob Knepper pitched the Giants to a 6-1 victory over the Dodgers. A single by McCovey accounted for two of the Giants' three runs in the first inning to start Doug Rau on the way to his first defeat of the season. McCovey then put game on ice with a three-run homer in the fifth. Knepper, who pitched a six-hitter, was deprived of a shutout on a homer by Ron Cey in the ninth.

Cubs 6, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
The slumping Cardinals were shut out by Dave Roberts, 6-0, and suffered their 13th defeat in the last 14 games while the Cubs racked up their sixth consecutive victory. Roberts beat the Cardinals for the second time this year and for third time over two seasons, accounting for all his victories with the Cubs since being obtained in a deal with the Tigers July 30, 1977. Dave Rader, Roberts' batterymate, drove in four of the Cubs' runs with a single and triple.
