Today's scores and summaries:

Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
A six-run explosion in the first inning gave the Blue Jays a 6-2 triumph over the Red Sox, who were stopped on their eight-game winning streak. The Jays sent 11 batters to the plate in their opening turn. A double by Bob Bailor and walk to Roy Howell opened the attack. A double by Otto Velez scored both runners and a double by John Mayberry plated Velez. Three walks and a single by Rick Bosetti accounted for the other Jays' runs.

White Sox 17, Angels 2 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox sent 15 men to the plate in an 11-run fifth inning en route to a 17-2 plastering of the Angels. The big barrage started with one out on a single by Greg Pryor. Thad Bosley then grounded to losing pitcher Don Aase, who threw wildly to first base as Pryor scored and Bosley reached third. A single by Ralph Garr scored Bosley and brought on Ken Brett to relieve Aase. Jorge Orta singled and pinch-hitter Lamar Johnson grounded to shortstop Rance Mulliniks. But second baseman Bobby Grich dropped the ball at second on the attempted force play for an error. Chet Lemon then doubled to drive in two runs and after Alan Bannister was walked intentionally to fill the bases, a double by Bill Nahorodny plated three more. Pryor doubled to score Nahorodny and Tom Griffin relieved Brett. A single by Bosley put Pryor on third and Griffin booted Garr's grounder as both Pryor and Bosley scored, Garr reaching third. A single by Orta drove in the 11th run of the inning.

Tigers 3, Brewers 0 at Detroit (night game):
The second shutout of the season by Milt Wilcox carried the Tigers to a 3-0 decision over the Brewers. Two of the Tigers' runs were driven in by Aurelio Rodriguez. The third baseman hit a solo homer in the second inning and RBI single in the fifth. Two Brewer errors gave the Tigers an unearned run in the sixth stanza.

Royals 8, Mariners 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Frank White and Amos Otis sparked Kansas City to an 8-3 victory over the Mariners. Pete LaCock doubled in each of his first two at-bats to score the Royals' first two runs prior to the consecutive homers in the fifth inning. Three stolen bases helped the Royals score four more times in the seventh with White, Clint Hurdle, Hal McRae and George Brett knocking in runs.

Orioles 3, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Two wild pitches brought home the winning run as the Orioles decisioned the Yankees, 3-2. The Yanks jumped into the lead in the second inning on Paul Blair's two-run double, but the Orioles tied the game in the fourth on a double by Billy Smith and homer by Ken Singleton. In the fifth, Rick Dempsey reached first safely when third baseman Graig Nettles dropped his leadoff line drive for an error. Dempsey then stole second and came home on consecutive wild pitches by Ed Figueroa.

Reds 10, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Homers by Pete Rose and George Foster highlighted a five-run third inning as the Reds enjoyed a 10-4 pounding of the Braves. Rose hit a two-run round-tripper and Foster smashed a three-run circuit clout. The Reds moved comfortably ahead in the fifth, scoring three more tallies on singles by Mike Lum and Tom Seaver and a sacrifice fly by Don Werner.

Astros 1, Giants 0 at Houston (night game):
Snapping a string of 25 scoreless innings, the Astros eked out a 1-0 triumph over the Giants with a run in the ninth. Jimmy Sexton drew a one-out walk from Vida Blue to pave the way for the tally. A single by Enos Cabell moved the runner to third and Blue was replaced on the mound by Randy Moffitt. Bob Watson received an intentional pass and Jesus Alou then hit a fly to medium left. Terry Whitfield caught the ball but his throw to the plate hit Sexton in the back. Mark Lemongello scattered seven hits in pitching his first shutout of the season.

Padres 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run single in the fourth inning by Derrel Thomas drove in the decisive runs as the Padres upended the Dodgers, 3-1. With the score tied, 1-1, in the fourth, Oscar Gamble singled and Gene Tenace walked. Both runners advanced on a groundout before Thomas stroked a base hit to left to drive in two runs. Rollie Fingers, with 1 2/3 innings of relief, recorded his 11th save of the season.

Expos 9, Cubs 1 at Montreal (night game):
A four-run outburst in the first inning triggered the Expos to a 9-1 romp over the Cubs. In the opening frame, singles by Stan Papi, Gary Carter and Tony Perez were good for one run and Ellis Valentine followed with a homer to make the score 4-0. Perez gave the Expos another run in the third with his 300th career round-tripper. Valentine and Dave Rader got into a fist fight in the fifth inning and Valentine was ejected from the game.

Cardinals 5, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
Equaling their longest winning streak of the campaign, three games, the Cardinals eked out a 5-4 win over the Mets. With the score tied, 3-3, in the sixth, Jerry Morales belted a one-out triple. Ken Reitz received an intentional walk, but Mike Tyson spoiled the strategy with a fly to center that scored Morales. A single by Bob Forsch moved Reitz to second and a single by Lou Brock added what proved to be the winning run. Buddy Schultz relieved starter and winner Forsch in the eighth to preserve the victory and gain credit for his first save of the season and only the second save of the year for the entire Redbirds' bullpen.

Pirates 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
An error and a balk resulted in two runs in the first inning and enabled the Pirates to edge the Phillies, 2-1. Frank Taveras opened the game with a walk and scored when center fielder Garry Maddox threw past third base on a single by Phil Garner. Garner reached third on the play and scored when pitcher Randy Lerch balked. The Phillies' run came in the bottom of the first when Larry Bowa singled and scored when third baseman Jim Fregosi threw wildly to first on a grounder by Mike Schmidt. Schmidt suffered a knee injury in running out the ball and had to leave the game.
