Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Butch Hobson drove in four runs with a sacrifice fly and homer to lead the Red Sox to a 6-1 victory and ruin Jim Fregosi's debut as manager of the Angels. Fregosi, who replaced Dave Garcia, started Nolan Ryan but had to yank the fireballer after 4 1/3 innings. Ryan gave up only five hits but walked six. The Angels committed three errors. Hobson accounted for his first RBI of the game with his sacrifice fly in the second inning and then hit his homer after Jack Brohamer and Dwight Evans drew passes in the fourth.

Twins 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Roy Smalley had a hand in all four of the Twins' runs and Bombo Rivera made a diving catch of a line drive with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to save a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. Smalley set up one run with a single in the first inning, walked and scored in the third and knocked in the deciding pair with a double in the fourth. Rivera made his catch on a smash by Rusty Staub.

White Sox 5, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals, who collected only five hits off Francisco Barrios, were stopped on their seven-game winning streak by the White Sox, 5-1. Bill Nahorodny hit a double and homer and drove in two runs in support of Barrios, who returned to the starting rotation after a stint in the bullpen.

Indians 7, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
After Buddy Bell and Andre Thornton hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning, the Indians scored again on singles by Duane Kuiper, Ron Pruitt and Paul Dade in the ninth to edge the Brewers, 7-6. Charlie Moore and Don Money homered for the Brewers.

Yankees 3, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Continuing his unbeaten streak, Ron Guidry gained his eighth victory when the Yankees defeated the A's, 3-1. The Yanks scored all their runs off John Henry Johnson in the first inning on a pass to Willie Randolph, singles by Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss, another walk to Graig Nettles and a single by Cliff Johnson. Guidry, who struck out 11 for his career high, yielded the A's run on a homer by Gary Alexander in the eighth. The A's threatened in the ninth, putting two men on base with one out, but Rich Gossage relieved and fanned Dave Revering and Wayne Gross.

Orioles 10, Mariners 9 at Seattle (night game):
The first grand slam of Billy Smith's career started the Orioles' scoring in the third inning en route to a 10-9 victory over the Mariners. The Orioles loaded the bases on a double by Rick Dempsey, pass to Mark Belanger and single by Larry Harlow before Smith connected for his jackpot wallop off Jim Colborn, who made his first start for the Mariners since being acquired from the Royals. The Orioles splurged for four more runs in the fourth and picked up a pair in the seventh for a 10-5 lead before the Mariners' rallies fell short. In the ninth, after Leroy Stanton knocked in a run with a double, the Mariners filled the bases with one out, but Bill Stein struck out and John Hale grounded out to end the game.

Blue Jays 3, Rangers 1 at Toronto (night game):
Jesse Jefferson gave up only four hits and retired 14 of the last 15 batters while pitching the Blue Jays to a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Jefferson yielded the Rangers' run in the fourth inning on a pass to Bobby Bonds, single by Mike Hargrove and sacrifice fly by Bump Wills, but the Jays struck back immediately against Jon Matlack in their half. Rick Bosetti doubled and Bob Bailor, Roy Howell and Otto Velez followed with singles to produce two runs. Howell then scored the third run on a passed ball by Jim Sundberg. Dave McKay doubled in the seventh to extend his batting streak to 16 games, breaking the previous club record of 15 games hitting safely by Howell last season.

Cubs 2, Braves 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs gained their seventh victory in nine extra-inning games this season when Manny Trillo singled with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th to beat the Braves, 2-1. Trillo scored the Cubs' first run, hitting a double in the second and coming around on a wild pitch and infield single by Dave Rader. Rod Gilbreath tied the score with a homer in the third. Greg Gross walked with one out in the Cubs' 11lth and took third on a single by Bill Buckner. Larry Biittner was handed an intentional pass to load the bases. Bobby Murcer lined out before Trillo ended the game with his single.

Reds 3, Pirates 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench, who was sitting out his fifth game because of a stiff back, came up as a pinch-hitter with two out in the ninth inning and smashed a homer to give the Reds a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. Jim Rooker, the Pirates' losing pitcher, knocked in their two runs with a double in the sixth. The Reds picked up an unearned run in the seventh and tied the score when George Foster hit for the circuit in the eighth.

Astros 2, Cardinals 1 at Houston (night game):
After being shut out on three hits by John Denny for the first 8 1/3 innings, the Astros came to life with a single by Enos Cabell and homer by Jose Cruz to defeat the Cardinals, 2-1. The Cards, who also were held to five hits by Joaquin Andujar and Joe Sambito, scored their run in the sixth on a walk to Geogre Hendrick and double by Ted Simmons.

Giants 6, Expos 5 at Montreal (night game):
With two out in the 10th inning, the Giants scored on a pass to Terry Whitfield, single by Darrell Evans and double by Willie McCovey to defeat the Expos, 6-5. Larry Parrish hit a three-run homer in the second to put the Expos ahead, 3-2, but the Giants moved in front, 5-3, before Ellis Valentine tied the score by hitting for the circuit with a man on base in the ninth.

Padres 5, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
A homer by Dave Winfield with two men on base in the fifth inning proved to be the Padres' deciding blow in a 5-4 victory over the Mets. The Padres broke a 1-1 tie with a single by Randy Jones, double by Ozzie Smith and grounder by Oscar Gamble, who was safe on an error by Doug Flynn, before Winfield whacked his homer. Jones went into the eighth with a 5-2 lead but was lifted for Rollie Fingers after John Stearns hit for the circuit with a man on base. The Mets loaded the bases against Fingers with one out in the ninth, but Elliott Maddox hit into a double play to end the game.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Leading off with a homer, Bake McBride ignited a three-run getaway in the first inning that enabled the Phillies to defeat the Dodgers, 4-2. After McBride's blow, Larry Bowa doubled and scored when Bill North let the ball get past him in center field. Garry Maddox then singled, stole second and scored on a single by Richie Hebner, who also accounted for the Phillies' last run with a homer in the sixth. The Dodgers had round-trippers by Ron Cey and Bill Russell for their markers.
