Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Firing a five-hitter, Frank Tanana pitched the Angels to a 5-1 victory, stopping the Orioles on their 13-game winning skein. The only Oriole run came on a homer by Rich Dauer in the first inning. The Angels' first two tallies came in the opening stanza on singles by Bobby Grich and Rick Miller, a sacrifice bunt and a single by Joe Rudi. Ike Hampton belted his first homer of the season in the second and the Angels got two more runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded error by Dauer at third base. The victory was Tanana's 10th.

Red Sox 7, A's 3 at Boston (night game):
Knocking in four runs with a homer and triple, Jim Rice powered the Red Sox past the A's, 7-3, for the A's eighth consecutive loss. The Red Sox trailed, 3-1, entering the seventh, but Jerry Remy walked and Rice tied the score with his 21st round-tripper of the season. Butch Hobson started the eighth with a double, Rick Burleson drew a walk and Rice tripled to put the Sox ahead, 5-3. Carl Yastrzemski then hit a homer to add two more runs.

White Sox 3, Rangers 1 at Chicago (night game):
Posting their fifth straight victory and 17th in the last 19 games, the White Sox defeated the Rangers, 3-1, as Steve Stone and Lerrin LaGrow combined on a three-hitter. Stone had a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings before Bobby Thompson doubled and scored the Rangers' only run on a single by Mike Hargrove. The White Sox scored in the second on a bases-empty home run by Ron Blomberg. Their second run came in the fourth when Chet Lemon singled, stole second, advanced to third on an outfield fly and scored on a single by Bill Nahorodny. Blomberg singled home an insurance run in the eighth after walks to Jim Breazeale and Lemon.

Royals 7, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Led by Frank White, who stroked three hits, knocked in two runs and scored another, the Royals breezed past the Tigers, 7-2. White doubled home Freddie Patek in the third inning, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. The second baseman also had an RBI single in the seventh. The Royals scored first in the second inning on a walk and consecutive singles by White and Joe Zdeb. Amos Otis hit a solo home run in the third.

Yankees 5, Mariners 2 at New York (night game):
Homers by Mickey Rivers and Graig Nettles were the big blows as the Yankees won, 5-2, over the Mariners. Don Gullett got credit for his first win since last September. The teams were locked in a 0-0 contest after five frames when Jim Spencer opened the Yankee sixth with a double, went to third on a bunt single by Frank Stanley and scored as Brian Doyle bounced into a double play. Rivers then hit a home run. In the seventh, Reggie Jackson walked and Chris Chambliss singled to kayo starter Paul Mitchell. Byron McLaughlin relieved and was greeted by Nettles' 12th homer of the season.

Dodgers 3, Mets 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run single by Steve Garvey capped a three-run fifth inning as the Dodgers blanked the Mets, 3-0, with Rick Rhoden and Charlie Hough combining on a five-hitter. No Met runner got past first base. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the fifth on walks to Rick Monday, Steve Yeager and Davey Lopes. An infield single by Bill Russell drove in one run and Garvey followed with a single to center for two more.

Expos 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Doubles by Chris Speier, Tony Perez and Ellis Valentine in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Expos to a 3-1 victory over the Padres, ending their six-game losing streak. Ross Grimsley became the first N.L. pitcher to win 11 games, going the distance for the 10th time in 15 starts. Speier's double in the sixth came with one out and, after Warren Cromartie flied out, Perez and Valentine connected for consecutive two-base hits.

Giants 6, Phillies 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Winning his fifth straight game and the Giants' sixth in a row, John Montefusco struck out 11 batters while defeating the Phillies, 6-1. The Giants scored four runs in their first turn at bat. With one out, Darrell Evans singled, Jack Clark walked and Mike Ivie hit an RBI single. A triple by Larry Herndon made it 3-0 and a single by Terry Whitfield capped the inning. With one out in the second Rob Andrews singled, Evans walked and Clark drove both runners home with a double.
