Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 10, Yankees 4 at Boston (night game):
A six-run outburst in the eighth inning lifted the Red Sox to a 10-4 triumph over the Yankees. With the score 4-4, Carlton Fisk led off the Sox eighth with a double. Fred Lynn received an intentional walk but George Scott singled in Fisk with the go-ahead run. A sacrifice by Dwight Evans moved the runners along and Butch Hobson walked before Rick Burleson singled to right to plate two runs. When Reggie Jackson bobbled the ball for an error, Scott dashed home with the third tally. Sparky Lyle relieved Rich Gossage on the mound and was greeted by Jerry Remy's double to right center. Jackson again misplayed the ball and both Hobson and Burleson scored. A single by Jim Rice then capped the inning and gave the victory to Tom Burgmeier in relief of Luis Tiant.

Mariners 7, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run homer by Bob Robertson capped a five-run third inning that carried the Mariners to a 7-4 victory over the White Sox. With one out in the third, Dan Meyer singled and Leon Roberts and Bruce Bochte walked to fill the bases. After an out, a single by Bill Stein drove in two runs and Robertson then blasted his round-tripper. Rookie Mike Parrott, twice on the disabled list this year, got his first win by allowing just three hits in five innings.

Royals 6, Indians 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Led by rookie Clint Hurdle, the Royals edged the Indians, 6-5. Hurdle doubled home the first Royal run in the third inning and scored one of the three other runs the Royals collected in that frame on consecutive RBI singles by George Brett, Hal McRae and Al Cowens. Hurdle, who extended his batting streak to eight games, walked in the fourth and scored on a double by Freddie Patek. The Royals scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth on a single by McRae, walk to Cowens, a double steal and a groundout by Joe Zdeb to pin the defeat on David Clyde. Andre Thornton drove in three runs for the Indians with a homer and two singles.

A's 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
The A's snapped their 11-game losing streak with a 2-1 verdict over the Rangers. The first A's run came in the opening frame on a single by Joe Wallis, sacrifice by Dell Alston and RBI single by Taylor Duncan. The Rangers tied the contest in the fifth when Toby Harrah drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Mike Hargrove. Jeff Newman snapped the 1-1 tie in the eighth and gave the A's their victory with a home run. Elias Sosa pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to gain his 10th save.

Cubs 6, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Increasing their lead in the N. L. East to three games, the Cubs took advantage of Pittsburgh errors to down the Pirates, 6-4, in 10 innings. The score was 3-3 when pinch-hitter Mike Vail opened the top of the 10th by reaching first safely when third baseman Mario Mendoza bobbled his grounder for an error. After Ivan DeJesus sacrificed, Gene Clines was safe at first when first baseman John Milner dropped a throw from pitcher Grant Jackson. Larry Biittner's double scored Rudy Meoli, who ran for Clines, and after Dave Kingman was walked intentionally, Manny Trillo's double plated two more tallies. The Pirates scored a run and loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the 10th but reliever Willie Hernandez came on to retire Dave Parker on an infield grounder. The Pirates had loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but Bruce Sutter fanned Bill Robinson and got Willie Stargell on a groundout.
