Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 10, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Fred Stanley capped a seven-run fourth inning and lifted the Yankees to a 10-4 triumph over the Red Sox. The Yanks, held hitless for the first three frames, started their big rally with a leadoff single by Willie Randolph. Thurman Munson followed with an infield hit, Graig Nettles singled to left and Gary Thomasson doubled in two tallies. Jim Spencer drew an intentional walk to load the sacks and Stanley, a .226 career hitter with only five lifetime homers, lofted a pitch into the left field screen. It was the second career grand slam for Stanley, starting at shortstop in place of the injured Bucky Dent. Reggie Jackson hit a three-run homer in the ninth to increase the Yankee margin.

Mariners 4, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Bruce Bochte snapped a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning and gave the Mariners a 4-2 decision over the White Sox. In the eighth, White Sox starter Steve Stone walked Julio Cruz and Larry Milbourne before being replaced by Jim Willoughby. Dan Meyer beat out a bunt to fill the bases and Leon Roberts forced Cruz at home before the game-winning hit by Bochte.

Royals 3, Indians 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Coming from behind with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Royals edged the Indians, 3-2. Loser Rick Wise carried a four-hitter into the eighth, but Tom Poquette reached first on an error by shortstop Tom Veryzer. Hal McRae bounced into a fielder's choice and took third on a single by George Brett. A single by Darrell Porter plated McRae with the tying run and sent Brett to third. Brett then scored when Clint Hurdle bounced out to second.

Orioles 8, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The surging Orioles posted their 19th victory in the last 21 games, beating the Brewers, 8-5. The score was 1-1 when the Orioles scored five runs after two were out in the fifth inning. Singles by Billy Smith and Mark Belanger and a double by Rich Dauer produced two runs. Ken Singleton was hit by a pitch and Eddie Murray then doubled to plate Dauer. Lee May was walked intentionally to load the bases and Eduardo Rodriguez, brought on in relief of Bill Travers, walked Pat Kelly to force in another run. A single by Carlos Lopez brought Murray home to cap the outburst.

Angels 10, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run homer by Brian Downing and three RBIs by Ron Fairly on a pair of doubles staked Frank Tanana and the Angels to a 10-5 decision over the Twins. Downing's blast capped a five-run seventh inning. Consecutive doubles by Don Baylor and Fairly accounted for the first run of the inning and another scored on an error before Downing unloaded. Fairly's first double drove in two tallies in the Angels' three-run third frame.

Rangers 5, A's 4 at Texas (night game):
Rallying from a four-run deficit in the late innings, the Rangers edged the A's, 5-4. The Rangers trailed, 4-0, going into the bottom of the seventh but tied the game with runs on singles by Pat Putnam and Jim Sundberg, a fielder's choice grounder by Bobby Thompson and a single by John Lowenstein. Mike Jorgensen led off the ninth with a base on balls and moved to second on a sacrifice by Jim Mason. Bump Wills received an intentional walk and Richie Zisk then delivered the game-winning single.

Tigers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
Back-to-back doubles by John Wockenfuss and Jason Thompson broke a 3-3 tie in the top of 13th inning to give the Tigers a 4-3 triumph over the Blue Jays, ending the Tigers' seven-game losing streak. The Tigers had gone ahead, 3-2, in the top of ninth when Blue Jay reliever Tom Murphy uncorked a wild pitch that permitted Thompson to score. The Jays tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Tiger reliever John Hiller, after entering the game with a runner on first and one out, issued a base on balls to Rick Cerone and a single to Otto Velez.

Astros 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Two errors by shortstop Bill Russell set up three unearned runs for Houston in the first inning, paving the way for the Astros' 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. After Jesus Alou singled in the opening frame, Russell bobbled the throw at second base after Enos Cabell hit grounder to Davey Lopes. Bob Watson forced Cabell, but Art Howe doubled in Alou. A walk to Joe Ferguson filled the bases and Russell then permitted Jose Cruz' grounder to go through his legs for a two-base error, scoring Watson and Howe.

Mets 3, Expos 0 at New York (night game):
Outdueling 11-game winner Ross Grimsley, Nino Espinosa pitched a four-hitter as the Mets beat the Expos, 3-0. Steve Henderson led off the first inning with a homer and drove in another run with an infield out in the second. The Mets scored their final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by John Stearns. Only one Expos' runner got as far as third base.

Cardinals 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ending their six-game losing streak, the Cardinals posted a 4-2 triumph over the Phillies. The Cards opened the scoring in the second inning when Ted Simmons doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales. The Redbirds added two tallies in the fourth when Garry Templeton walked, stole second and scored on Keith Hernandez' single. Hernandez then stole second and scored on a double by Ken Reitz. In the sixth, Hernandez was safe at first on an error by Ted Sizemore and came around on singles by Morales and Reitz.

Pirates 6, Cubs 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Scattering nine hits, Bert Blyleven pitched the Pirates to a 6-1 breeze over the Cubs. Ken Holtzman, making his first start as a Cub since September 6, 1971, absorbed the loss. The Pirates' scoring began in the fourth inning when singles by Dave Parker and Bill Robinson and a walk to Rennie Stennett loaded the bases before Holtzman hit Duffy Dyer with a pitch to force in a run. Omar Moreno then bounced a single over second to make it 2-0 and Stennett scored when shortstop Ivan DeJesus threw wildly on an attempted force at second. Stennett singled home a run in the fifth and Phil Garner doubled home a run in the sixth before a solo homer by Willie Stargell in the seventh closed out the Pirate scoring.

Braves 5, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Braves scored two runs in the top of the 10th to down the Padres, 5-3. With two out, Gary Matthews tripled. Jeff Burroughs drew an intentional walk, but Dale Murphy spoiled the strategy with a single. A single by Bob Horner then scored Rod Gilbreath, the pinch-runner for Burroughs.

Reds 6, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
A homer, triple and double by George Foster highlighted a 12-hit attack as the Reds downed the Giants, 6-3. Foster hit a bases-empty round-tripper in the first inning, doubled and scored on a single by Dan Driessen in sixth and tripled home Joe Morgan with the go-ahead run in the eighth. Ken Griffey capped a ninth-inning rally with a two-run single. The Giants scored all their runs in the third on singles by Terry Whitfield, Jack Clark and Darrell Evans and a triple by Jim Dwyer.
