Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Yankees 2 at Boston (night game):
A six-run explosion in the third inning propelled the Red Sox to a 9-2 romp over the Yankees. Jerry Remy opened the third with a single and stole second. Jim Rice drew a walk and Carl Yastrzemski doubled to drive in Remy. Rice scored on a wild pitch by starter Jim Beattie. A double by Carlton Fisk plated Yastrzemski. Fisk moved to third on a wild pitch by reliever Dick Tidrow and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fred Lynn. The Red Sox went on to add two more markers before the frame ended when Butch Hobson homered with Dwight Evans aboard. Catfish Hunter made his first appearance for the Yankees since May 9 and was tagged for back-to-back homers by Lynn and George Scott.

Indians 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
After spotting Kansas City two early runs, the Indians came back to beat the Royals, 4-2, snapping a three-game losing skein. A triple by Johnny Grubb drove home Rick Manning and Andre Thornton, both of whom had walked, to tie game in the fourth. Jim Norris drew a walk to open the Tribe seventh and Duane Kuiper followed with a bunt single. Tom Veryzer and Paul Dade then bounced into consecutive fielder's choices to score Norris. Another fielder's choice grounder by Veryzer drove in the final Indian tally in the ninth after singles by Norris and Kuiper. Dan Spillner pitched three innings of one-hit relief for the Indians to earn his first A. L. win.

Brewers 5, Orioles 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Posting their 15th victory in the last 18 games, the Brewers downed the Orioles, 5-3. The Brewers' first run came in the opening inning when Paul Molitor singled, stole second and scored on a single by Sal Bando. They added two more in the third on a single by Don Money, double by Bando and single by Larry Hisle. A double by Robin Yount, sacrifice by Gorman Thomas and sacrifice fly by Buck Martinez was good for another marker in the fourth, and an unearned run in the sixth built up a 5-0 lead. The Orioles kayoed Brewer starter Lary Sorensen in the eighth with five straight singles, but Bill Castro relieved and held the Orioles at bay to preserve the victory.

Angels 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Leadoff batter Dave Machemer hit a home run in his first time at bat in the major leagues and Don Baylor added a two-run homer two outs later to power the Angels past the Twins. 5-2. Winning pitcher Don Aase yielded a single to leadoff batter Hosken Powell and Roy Smalley followed with a round-tripper for the Twins' two runs. After that, Aase allowed only three more hits.

Tigers 10, Blue Jays 8 at Toronto (night game):
The Tigers outlasted the Blue Jays, 10-8, in a free-swinging affair as Jason Thompson drove in three runs with a double and homer and Rusty Staub and Steve Kemp each drove in a pair of runs. The Tigers trailed, 6-5, entering the sixth when Alan Trammell started a five-run inning with a homer. Lou Whitaker and Ron LeFlore stroked consecutive singles before Kemp provided the go-ahead tallies with a two-run double. Staub then added an RBI single and after two walks loaded the bases, a wild pitch by reliever Tom Murphy resulted in the fifth run.

Dodgers 5, Astros 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
A pinch-hit single by Steve Yeager in the 11th inning gave the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Astros. Bill North opened the stanza with a two-base hit and moved to third on a sacrifice by Jerry Grote before Yeager delivered his game-winning blow. Rookie Bob Welch pitched the final two frames for his first major league win. The Dodgers led, 4-2, going into the eighth, but an error by second baseman Davey Lopes helped the Astros to a pair of unearned runs. The tying tally came in when reliever Charlie Hough walked Jesus Alou with the bases loaded.

Expos 2, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
In a game called by rain in the seventh inning, the Expos defeated the Mets, 2-1. The first Expo run came in the second inning on a homer by Ellis Valentine, but the Mets tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a triple by Steve Henderson and single by John Stearns. The winning run for the Expos came in the fifth when Gary Carter singled, Chris Speier reached first on an error and Steve Rogers lined a single to right.

Pirates 2, Cubs 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A single by Frank Taveras with two out in the ninth inning lifted the Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. With one out in the ninth, Phil Garner singled and moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by John Candelaria. Third baseman Mick Kelleher fielded the bunt and threw out Candelaria and when nobody covered third, Garner kept going. Taveras then stroked his hit to left to end the game. The Cubs opened the scoring in the third on a triple by Ivan DeJesus and single by Gene Clines. But the Pirates tied the contest in the bottom of that frame on a single by Garner, walk to Candelaria, sacrifice bunt by Taveras and single by Omar Moreno.

Braves 2, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
A pair of singles by Gary Matthews were good for both runs as the Braves blanked the Padres, 2-0, with Adrian Devine and Gene Garber sharing the pitching laurels. The first Braves' run came in the fifth inning. With two out, Jerry Royster and Barry Bonnell drew successive walks and Matthews followed with a line single to center. Royster doubled with one out in the seventh stanza and Matthews grounded a single up the middle after Bonnell flied out.

Giants 3, Reds 0 at San Francisco (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Roger Metzger in the fourth inning triggered the Giants to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Reds as Ed Halicki unfurled a three-hitter. Willie McCovey drew a walk with one out in the fourth and moved to third on a double by Jack Clark. Jim Dwyer received an intentional walk, but Metzger spoiled the strategy with a line double to right center to score McCovey and Clark. Dwyer then scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Marc Hill. Tom Seaver, making his initial start since pitching a no-hitter, suffered his first loss after seven consecutive victories.
