Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
A seven-hitter by Rich Gale handed the Angels their third consecutive shutout as the Royals prevailed, 4-0. Art Kusnyer hit a homer in the third inning. It was his first in the majors since 1972 and only the third of his career. Frank White contributed two doubles and drove in runs in the fourth and sixth innings before being injured while getting picked off base in the eighth. The Royals' Al Cowens suffered strained ligaments in his right knee and was expected to be out of the lineup at least 10 days.

Indians 5, Tigers 4 at Cleveland (night game):
A four-run explosion in the first inning propelled the Indians to a 5-4 triumph over the Tigers. After two outs in the initial frame, a double by Johnny Grubb, walk to Andre Thornton and infield hit by Bernie Carbo filled the bases. Grubb scored on a wild pitch. Gary Alexander then unloaded a three-run homer into the left field seats. Alexander scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth when he singled, moved to third on a single by Duane Kuiper and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tom Veryzer. Strong relief pitching by Dan Spillner preserved the victory for the Tribe.

Brewers 8, Twins 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Lary Sorensen, the league leader in innings pitched with 138, scattered nine hits in recording his 10th victory and ninth complete game as the Brewers whipped the Twins, 8-2. The Twins led, 2-1, going into the bottom of the sixth but the Brewers erupted for three runs to assume the lead. Don Money opened with a single and Dick Davis followed with a home run. Ben Oglivie then tripled and was driven home on a single by Sal Bando. Oglivie capped a four-run explosion in the seventh stanza with a two-run homer.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
The rampaging Red Sox increased their lead in A.L. East to 9½ games by defeating the Yankees, 4-1. The Sox were stymied until the fifth inning when Yankee infielders Fred Stanley and Damaso Garcia collided chasing Butch Hobson's pop in shallow left field and the ball dropped for a two-base error. After an out, Jim Rice lined the ball into the right field bleachers. In the sixth stanza, Fred Lynn singled and scored on a double by Carlton Fisk. Fisk hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Mariners 8, White Sox 3 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run homer by Bob Stinson capped a five-run first inning that carried the Mariners to an 8-3 triumph over the White Sox and their seventh victory in the last eight games. Julio Cruz and Craig Reynolds opened the Mariner first with infield singles and, after one out, Cruz scored when Leon Roberts bounced into a force play. Bruce Bochte walked and Bob Robertson hit an RBI single before Stinson followed with his circuit clout.

Blue Jays 24, Orioles 10 at Toronto (night game):
In a game akin to married men playing single men at a company picnic, the Blue Jays thrashed the Orioles, 24-10, as John Mayberry hit two homers and drove in seven runs to pace the attack. The run and hit totals were the most ever recorded against the Orioles and the most in the brief history of the Blue Jays. Dave McKay and Otto Velez each hit two doubles in one inning, matching a feat last achieved by Baltimore's Mark Belanger in 1969. The Blue Jays batted around in three different innings. Bird manager Earl Weaver was forced to use catcher Elrod Hendricks and outfielder Larry Harlow as pitchers.

Braves 5, Dodgers 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Homers by Rowland Office, Gary Matthews and Bob Horner paced the Braves to a 5-2 victory over the Dodgers. Office and Matthews belted back-to-back clouts in the first inning. After the Dodgers tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the fifth on a homer by Rick Monday, the Braves went ahead in their turn on a double by Dale Murphy and single by Adrian Devine. It was Devine's first major league hit and RBI. Horner's shot came in the sixth with Biff Pocoroba on base on a single.

Cubs 10, Mets 9 at Chicago (day game):
After the Mets scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Cubs got six in their half, with Dave Rader's bases-loaded pinch-hit homer being the big blow, and went on to outlast the Mets, 10-9. The Mets' big inning was highlighted by a three-run pinch-homer by Ed Kranepool and two-run round-tripper by Willie Montanez. An RBI single by Larry Biittner gave the Cubs their first run of the fifth frame and after Rader's blast, the Cubs tallied another on back-to-back doubles by Lynn McGlothen and Ivan DeJesus.

Reds 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Dave Collins in the ninth inning lifted the Reds to a 4-3 decision over the Astros. Dave Concepcion led off the Reds' ninth with a bunt single and moved to third when losing pitcher Mark Lemongello threw Cesar Geronimo's bunt wildly past first. Collins, batting for Tom Seaver, then plated Concepcion with a fly to left.

Expos 5, Phillies 1 at Montreal (night game):
Taking advantage of Philadelphia errors, the Expos, behind the six-hit pitching of Steve Rogers, subdued the Phillies, 5-1. Dave Cash reached second base on an error by Ted Sizemore to open the Expos' fourth and went to third on a sacrifice by Chris Speier, who was safe at first on an error by Richie Hebner. After an out, Tony Perez hit into a fielder's choice to score Cash. Ellis Valentine then singled and stole second and Andre Dawson followed with a double to left, plating Perez and Valentine.

Pirates 11, Cardinals 8 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates won a doubleheader from the Cardinals, 5-4 and 11-8. The lidlifter was the completion of a game suspended after six innings on April 23. Cards had jumped off to 4-1 lead in opener but Pirates came back to tie contest in fourth frame. Winning run came across in sixth stanza on RBI triple by Dyer. Don Robinson held Redbirds to one hit over last three innings after play resumed. Parker's two-run homer in sixth inning lifted Pirates to victory in nightcap. Redbirds had taken early 7-2 lead but Bucs came back and, trailing, 8-6, going into sixth, exploded for four tallies. Moreno had driven in run with single and was on base when Parker unloaded to give Pirates 9-8 lead. After the homer, Bill Robinson walked, moved to third on single by Milner and scampered home on double steal.

Padres 2, Giants 1 at San Diego (night game):
Rolling to their sixth straight triumph, the Padres edged the Giants, 2-1, in 10 innings. A single by Gene Richards opened the Padre 10th. After Ozzie Smith sacrificed Richards to second and Fernando Gonzalez grounded out, Dave Winfield walked and Oscar Gamble was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tucker Ashford then walked on a 3-1 pitch to force the winning run home. The first Padre run came in the sixth on a solo homer by Winfield.
