Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Royals 4 at California (night game):
Joe Rudi, relegated to the bench because of a .193 batting average, came off the boards to smash a two-out pinch-hit grand-slam homer in the seventh inning and lift the Angels to a 5-4 triumph over the Royals, ending the Angels' five-game losing skein. Rudi's clout came off a 3-2 serve from reliever Steve Mingori, who entered the game after starter Dennis Leonard walked the bases loaded. The Royals had taken an early 9-0 lead with the aid of a solo homer by Hal McRae in the second and a two-run round-tripper by Amos Otis in the third. The Angels broke their streak of 31 scoreless innings in the fourth when Bobby Grich tallied on a wild pitch.

Tigers 6, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A six-run explosion in the opening inning triggered the Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the Indians. Dave Freisleben, making his A. L. debut, failed to retire a batter. Ron LeFlore opened the game with a single and stole second. Lou Whitaker drew a walk and LeFlore scored on a wild pitch. Rusty Staub then belted a home run. The assault continued with a single by Jason Thompson, an error by Duane Kuiper on a grounder by Steve Kemp and a run-scoring single by Milt May that sent Freisleben to the showers. Paul Reuschel, who joined the Tribe from the Cubs just prior to the game, took over and served up a single to Tim Corcoran that filled the bases. Phil Mankowski followed with a two-run single.

Brewers 13, Twins 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
Led by Larry Hisle, who cracked four hits including a homer, the Brewers outslugged the Twins, 13-6. Hisle scored four times. The Brewers broke a 2-2 tie in the third with a two-run double by Sal Bando. A homer by Dick Davis, double by Hisle and single by Ben Oglivie added a pair in the fifth. The Brewers clinched the outcome in the seventh with a five-run outburst that included a two-run double by Paul Molitor.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 4 at New York (night game):
A two-run homer by Graig Nettles in the 14th inning gave the Yankees a 6-4 triumph over the Red Sox. Roy White walked with one out and Nettles connected on reliever Dick Drago's first pitch. Ron Guidry, seeking his 13th straight win, was staked to a 3-0 lead, but the Red Sox chased him in the seventh, bringing on Rich Gossage, who was greeted by a two-run single by Rick Burleson to put Sox the ahead, 4-3. The Yanks tied the score in the eighth on an infield single by Thurman Munson and successive one-out bloop singles by Lou Piniella and Reggie Jackson. Sparky Lyle was the winner, pitching the last three innings.

Rangers 3, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
The surging Rangers posted their seventh straight victory, beating the A's, 3-1, as Dock Ellis and Reggie Cleveland combined on a five-hitter. After a first-inning single by Mitchell Page had given the A's a 1-0 lead, the Rangers tied the game in the third on a walk to Mike Hargrove, sacrifice by Bert Campaneris and single by Bump Wills. They went ahead in the fourth on a single by Bobby Bonds, sacrifice by Pat Putnam and single by Jim Sundberg. Wills walked in the eighth, stole second, took third on catcher Jim Essian's throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bonds.

White Sox 10, Mariners 6 at Seattle (night game):
Five home runs, two of them by Chet Lemon, enabled the White Sox to post a 10-6 decision over the Mariners. Bob Molinaro led off the fourth inning with a round-tripper. Jorge Orta drew a walk in the same frame and scored on a circuit clout by Jim Breazeale. Don Kessinger hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Lemon smashed solo blasts in the seventh and ninth innings. The Mariners, trailing 10-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, knocked starter Wilbur Wood out with a five-run rally that included a grand slam by John Hale, but reliever Rich Hinton came on to close out the game.

[DH] Blue Jays 6, Orioles 2 (night game) / Blue Jays 9, Orioles 8 at Toronto (night game):
Continuing to make mincemeat of Baltimore's vaunted pitching, the Blue Jays swept a twin bill from the Orioles, 6-2 and 9-8. The Jays pounded Jim Palmer for 11 hits in the opener. John Mayberry hit a solo homer in the second inning and the Jays went ahead to stay in the fourth on a single by Dave McKay, a sacrifice bunt and doubles by Alan Ashby and Bob Bailor. The Jays got three more in the fifth on a two-run triple by McKay and a double by Ashby. The Jays took an early lead in the nightcap, but the Birds tied the contest, 8-8, in the eighth with a three-run homer by Billy Smith highlighting the rally. In the ninth, Otto Velez drew a one-out walk, McKay singled and Sam Ewing, hitting a measly .161, stroked a pinch-single to score Velez.

Dodgers 3, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Ron Cey lifted the Dodgers to a 3-0 victory over the Braves behind the seven-hit pitching of Doug Rau. Cey's clout came in the seventh inning and followed one-out singles by Bill Russell and Steve Garvey.

Mets 7, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
A homer by John Stearns with two men on base capped a four-run first inning and propelled the Mets to a 7-2 victory over the Cubs. Stearns' blast scored Lee Mazzilli, who had walked, and Elliott Maddox, who had doubled and driven in the first run of the inning. Steve Henderson batted in two of the Mets' later runs with a double and a sacrifice fly. Pat Zachry scattered six hits in posting his ninth win of the campaign.

Astros 7, Reds 4 at Houston (night game):
Jumping on Bill Bonham for six runs and seven hits in the first four innings, the Astros snapped a five-game losing streak by outlasting the Reds, 7-4. A single by Enos Cabell drove in the first Astro run in the opening frame and Bob Watson made the score 2-0 with another single. After a single by Joe Niekro and walk to Denny Walling in the second inning, a double by Cabell plated two more tallies. The Astros added another pair in the fourth on a single by Niekro, triple by Terry Puhl and single by Walling. The Reds made it close by hitting five singles in the seventh, but reliever Joe Sambito came on to slam the door. The Reds' Johnny Bench, sidelined with a back strain, made his first appearance since June 11 and rapped a pinch-hit single in the eighth.

Phillies 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
The Phillies got only two hits but one was a home run by Greg Luzinski in the seventh inning and that was all that was necessary to edge the Expos, 1-0. Dick Ruthven fired a seven-hitter to beat luckless loser Hal Dues.

[DH] Cardinals 2, Pirates 0 (night game) / Cardinals 6, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The cellar-dwelling Cardinals rose up and beat the Pirates twice, 2-0 and 6-1. The Cardinals' runs in the opener came on a homer by Garry Templeton leading off the game and a double by Ken Reitz in the fourth inning, scoring Keith Hernandez, who had opened the frame with an infield single. Pete Vuckovich pitched strongly but was relieved in the ninth with a runner on second and one out. Buddy Schultz came on to retire the last two Bucs. The second game was interrupted twice by rain for more than two hours. Jerry Reuss started for the Pirates and gave up six hits without getting an out. Templeton opened with a triple and the next five batters singled with Jerry Mumphrey, Ted Simmons and George Hendrick each driving in runs. Reuss was lifted for Ed Whitson, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Reitz. Pete Falcone scattered nine hits in seven innings to win for the first time this year.

Giants 9, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Giants ended San Diego's six-game winning streak by rapping the Padres, 9-1, as Vida Blue picked up his fifth straight victory. Jack Clark clouted a pinch-hit grand-slam homer in the seventh inning and Willie McCovey smacked his 499th career round-tripper in the eighth. Gaylord Perry, seeking his seventh consecutive victory, was rapped for 13 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
