Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 9, Royals 5 at California (night game):
After the start of the game had been delayed 40 minutes by a power failure, the Angels went on to mount a 17-hit attack and beat the Royals, 9-5. Royals' starter Paul Splittorff lasted only 1 1/3 innings as eight of the first 11 Angel batters connected safely. Dave Chalk drove in two runs with a single in the second and a double in the fourth. Bobby Grich had two singles and smashed a two-run homer in the fifth.

[DH] Tigers 4, Indians 3 (night game) / Indians 2, Tigers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Splitting one-run decisions, the Tigers won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-3, and the Indians captured the second game, 2-1. An error by Indian third baseman Ted Cox set the stage for a three-run Tiger third inning in the first game. After Mark Wagner reached first on Cox' miscue, Steve Dillard singled and Wagner scored on a single by Ron LeFlore. A sacrifice fly by Steve Kemp plated Dillard and a single by Aurelio Rodriguez scored LeFlore. LeFlore singled home the Tigers' final tally in the fourth. The Indians' winning run in the nightcap came across in the sixth inning on a walk to Rick Manning, a sacrifice, and a single by Andre Thornton.

[DH] Brewers 5, Yankees 0 (night game) / Brewers 7, Yankees 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Taking over second place from the Yankees in the A. L. East, the Brewers swept a doubleheader, 5-0 and 7-2, behind the stout pitching of Mike Caldwell and Jerry Augustine. The Brewers staked Caldwell to a quick lead in the opener on a sacrifice fly by Robin Yount in the second inning and an RBI single by Sixto Lezcano in the third. Ben Oglivie hit a three-run homer in the seventh. The Brewers also got on the board early in the nightcap, scoring twice in their first turn at bat on a double by Paul Molitor, single by Don Money and double by Dick Davis. The Yanks tied the game in the third on a two-run single by Chris Chambliss, but the Brewers broke the deadlock in the seventh. Lezcano singled, went to second on a balk and scored on a single by Sal Bando. A double by Buck Martinez drove in Bando.

A's 2, Rangers 1 at Oakland (night game):
A single by Mike Edwards with two out in the 15th inning gave the A's a 2-1 victory over the Rangers and halted the seven-game Texas winning streak. Wayne Gross started the winning rally with an infield hit. Rob Picciolo ran for Gross and reached second on a sacrifice by Jim Essian. After Glenn Burke walked and Joe Wallis flied out, Edwards grounded a hit into left to end the marathon. The A's had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a single by Taylor Duncan, a wild pitch, an infield single by Gross and a forceout. The Rangers tied the contest in the seventh on a single by Jim Sundberg, double by Toby Harrah and infield out by Mike Hargrove.

White Sox 4, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run homer by Jorge Orta carried the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Mariners. Orta's round-tripper came in the sixth inning after one-out singles by Ralph Garr and Bob Molinaro. The Sox added an insurance tally in the seventh on a single by Claudell Washington, a throwing error on an attempted pickoff and a sacrifice fly by Eric Soderholm. The Mariners' runs came on a solo homer by Bob Robertson in the second and a single by Bob Stinson in the fourth.

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 2 at Toronto (night game):
Extending their winning streak to four, longest in their two-year history, the Blue Jays continued to make life miserable for Baltimore, handing the Orioles their seventh straight setback, 3-2. Jim Clancy blanked the Birds until two were out in the ninth when a pair of walks and a single by Lee May brought on reliever Tom Murphy. The Orioles got another run on an error by Roy Howell before Murphy recorded the final out. The Blue Jays scored two unearned runs in the first inning after third baseman Rich Dauer made a throwing error on a grounder by Rick Bosetti. Howell bounced into a forceout and, with two outs, Rico Carty homered. The Jays added the deciding run in the fourth on doubles by Otto Velez and Rick Cerone.

Dodgers 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Ron Cey, his second in two games, powered the Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the Braves. Cey's blast came in the third inning and followed a single by Bill Russell and a walk to Steve Garvey. The Braves' tallies came on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and a solo homer by Jeff Burroughs in the fifth.

Cubs 9, Mets 8 at Chicago (day game):
A bases-loaded squeeze bunt by Mick Kelleher in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Dave Kingman from third base and gave the Cubs a 9-8 victory over the Mets. With one out in the 10th, Kingman was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Greg Gross. Larry Biittner was intentionally walked to set the stage for Kelleher. The Cubs led, 8-5, going into the ninth frame, but the Mets tied the contest as Elliott Maddox hit a two-run homer and Ron Hodges got a two-out pinch-single to plate Steve Henderson, who had doubled.

Astros 3, Reds 0 at Houston (night game):

Reitz' smash down the right field line scored Ted Simmons, who doubled with one out, and Keith Hernandez, who was walked intentionally. The Cards carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth and appeared to have the game won when Jerry Mumphrey threw out John Milner at the plate when he attempted to score on a single by Ed Ott. Ott took second on the throw and scored when Phil Garner singled up the middle on the first pitch by reliever Mark Littell. Willie Stargell's sacrifice fly preceded Garner's RBI hit. Roy Thomas, pitching scoreless ball over the last two innings, got credit for his first major league victory.

[DH] Giants 4, Padres 2 (night game) / Padres 4, Giants 1 at San Diego (night game):
Four hits by Larry Herndon paced the Giants to a 4-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but a two-run homer by Dave Winfield triggered the Padres to a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap. The Giants scored a pair of runs in the second inning of the lidlifter on a double by Willie McCovey, single by Herndon, double by Johnnie LeMaster and a squeeze bunt by Jim Barr.
