Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Consecutive home runs by George Scott and Dwight Evans in the ninth inning powered the Red Sox to a 4-3 triumph over the Orioles. Scott's blast followed a single by Fred Lynn and tied the game at 3-3. Evans then drilled a pitch into the seats. Reliever Allen Ripley blanked the Orioles on two hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Birds' defeat was their eighth straight.

Angels 3, Royals 1 at California (night game):
Hitless in his 24 previous at-bats, Ron Fairly singled with two out in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Angels to a 3-1 victory over the Royals. With one out in the eighth, Lyman Bostock and Don Baylor hit consecutive singles and the runners advanced to second and third on a groundout by Ron Jackson. Fairly, playing in his 2,400th major league game, then hit a sharp grounder between first and second to score Bostock. Royal second sacker Frank White made a diving stop of the ball but threw wildly past first and Baylor also scored.

Indians 6, Tigers 3 at Cleveland (day game):
A three-run outburst in the eighth inning gave the Indians a 6-3 decision over the Tigers. The score was 3-3 and with one out in the eighth when the winning rally began with walks to Paul Dade and pinch-hitter Johnny Grubb. After a single by Andre Thornton plated Dade, a single by Rick Manning sent Jack Morris to the showers. Steve Foucault relieved and was tapped for an RBI single by Manning. Ted Cox walked to load the bases and Jim Norris drew a pass to force in Thornton. Jim Crawford replaced Foucault and finally put out the fire. The Tribe's first three tallies came in the third on a homer by Gary Alexander following a pair of walks. The Tigers chased Indians' starter David Clyde in the sixth on a single by Mickey Stanley, an error and a single by Steve Dillard.

A's 8, Rangers 7 at Oakland (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Mitchell Page in the 10th inning produced the winning run as the A's outlasted the Rangers, 8-7. Jeff Newman led off the 10th with a triple and was replaced by pinch-runner Miguel Dilone. The next two batters were walked intentionally to fill the bases before Tito Fuentes grounded into a force at the plate and Page hit his fly to shallow right. The Rangers, taking full advantage of bases on balls and errors, scored five runs in the first two innings off Tim Conroy on only one hit. The A's jumped on Fergie Jenkins for four hits and four runs in the fourth frame. The key blows were an RBI double by Joe Wallis and singles by Page, Taylor Duncan and Mario Guerrero. The Rangers tied the contest in the eighth on a double by Bobby Thompson and singles by John Ellis and Bert Campaneris.

Mariners 9, White Sox 7 at Seattle (night game):
A grand-slam home run by Bob Stinson lifted the Mariners to a 9-7 triumph over the White Sox. The Mariners entered the eighth trailing, 7-5. Bruce Bochte drew a leadoff walk, Leon Roberts followed with a single and John Hale was safe when Jorge Orta booted his grounder. Stinson then unloaded his sixth game-winning hit of the season.

Dodgers 7, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Don Sutton highlighted a five-run first inning with a two-run single and then set the Los Angeles strikeout record while pitching the Dodgers to a 7-3 victory over the Braves. The Dodgers routed starter Preston Hanna in the first inning when Bill Russell slapped a one-out double and scored on a single by Reggie Smith. Steve Garvey stroked an RBI single and after a walk to Ron Cey and RBI single by Rick Monday, Sutton knocked in two more with his base hit. Sutton went into the game tied with Don Drysdale at 2,283 for most strikeouts by an L.A. pitcher and retired five Braves on strikes to become the club's all-time strikeout king in L.A. Drysdale had a career total of 2,486 strikeouts, but 203 came while he was with Brooklyn.

Phillies 9, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A bases-loaded double by Jose Cardenal in the first inning against his former Cub mates triggered the Phillies to a 9-3 victory. Larry Bowa and Mike Schmidt singled in the first. After Schmidt slid into second on the throw to third, he had to leave game with a hamstring injury of his right leg. Greg Luzinski received an intentional base on balls and Cardenal then smacked the ball into the left field corner to clear the bases. The Cubs cut their deficit to 4-3 in the seventh, but the Phils scored on a two-run double by Bob Boone in the eighth before a three-run homer by Luzinski in the ninth sealed the game.

Astros 5, Reds 0 at Houston (night game):
Handing Cincinnati its second straight shutout, Floyd Bannister tossed a four-hitter as the Astros downed the Reds, 5-0. The Astros got four consecutive first-inning singles, with Jose Cruz and Bob Watson driving in runs. Cruz added an RBI single in the third after Enos Cabell walked and reached second on a balk. Jesus Alou got a pinch-hit single to plate two additional tallies in the eighth and finish off the Reds.

Pirates 4, Mets 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A pinch-hit bloop triple by Rennie Stennett in the eighth inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 triumph over the Mets. Stennett's hit bounced over the head of Bruce Boisclair in short right field and scored Phil Garner, who had singled and reached second on a sacrifice by Mario Mendoza.
