Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 at Chicago (day game):
A leadoff home run by Eric Soderholm in the seventh inning gave the White Sox a 2-1 triumph over the Rangers. The initial Sox run came in the first frame on a sacrifice fly by Lamar Johnson. The Rangers tied it in the second on a double by Jim Sundberg and single by Toby Harrah. Ron Schueler pitched the first five innings for the Sox but had to leave the game because of a contusion on the ring finger of his pitching hand. Mike Proly picked up his first A. L. win with four innings of two-hit shutout relief.

Orioles 6, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Five straight singles and a pair of errors added up to five runs in the sixth inning, enabling the Orioles to top the Indians, 6-4. After Rich Dauer flied out to open the stanza, Ken Singleton, Eddie Murray, Lee May, Doug DeCinces and Pat Kelly hit consecutive singles to account for three runs. DeCinces then scored on a throwing error by catcher Gary Alexander and Kelly crossed the plate when Dave Skaggs reached first on a throwing error by shortstop Larvell Blanks. Johnny Grubb and Andre Thornton homered for the Indians. Don Stanhouse picked up his 12th save, getting out of a bases-loaded none-out situation in the bottom of the sixth by striking out Grubb and getting Blanks to bounce into a double play.

Blue Jays 9, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Four singles by John Mayberry paced a 17-hit attack as the Blue Jays romped over the Tigers, 9-2. The Jays got seven hits -- five of the scratch variety -- to score five runs in the fourth inning. Balor Moore went 6 2/3 innings, yielding seven hits and both Tiger runs. Joe Coleman finished up.

Royals 4, Angels 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A single by Clint Hurdle in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Royals to a 4-3 triumph over the Angels. George Brett led off the ninth with a double and Darrell Porter received an intentional walk. A sacrifice by Hal McRae advanced the runners and Dave LaRoche came on to pitch to Hurdle, who bounced a hit to right through the drawn-in infield. The Royals had a 3-1 lead going into the top of ninth, but Don Baylor smacked a two-run homer to tie the contest.

Twins 7, Brewers 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A five-hitter by Gary Serum stopped the Brewers as the Twins posted a 7-2 victory. The Twins scored two runs in the second inning on consecutive singles by Larry Wolfe, Roy Smalley, Butch Wynegar and Bombo Rivera, and plated another pair in the third on singles by Dan Ford and Jose Morales, an infield out and a single by Wolfe. After walks to Rivera and Rod Carew, Ford slugged a double for the Twins' final two markers in the sixth inning.

A's 9, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
A pair of two-run homers by Joe Wallis sparked the A's to their seventh victory in eight games, a 9-4 triumph over the Mariners. Wallis' first round-tripper came in the opening inning and followed a walk to Larry Murray. A homer by Tony Armas netted two tallies in the second. Wallis' second circuit clout came in the eighth with Mike Edwards aboard via a single.

Astros 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Astros throttled the Reds, 3-1, behind the four-hit pitching of J.R. Richard. The Astros scored in their first turn at bat on a triple by Terry Puhl and single by Denny Walling. The Reds tied the score in the bottom of the first on singles by Pete Rose, Ken Griffey and George Foster. Jose Cruz singled home Walling to put the Astros ahead, 2-1, in the third before a single by pinch-hitter Dave Bergman closed out the scoring in the seventh.

Dodgers 4, Braves 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Don Sutton got credit for his fifth straight win as the Dodgers bested the Braves, 4-1. Dusty Baker and Joe Ferguson opened the fourth inning with consecutive doubles. Bill North got an infield hit, Sutton sacrificed and Davey Lopes capped the three-run frame with a double. The final Dodger marker scored in the eighth on a double by Baker. Sutton's shutout bid was spoiled when Gary Matthews homered in the ninth before the Dodgers had to call on Bob Welch to save the game.

[DH] Mets 4, Phillies 0 (night game) / Phillies 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Two-hit pitching by Pat Zachry and a grand-slam homer by Lee Mazzilli gave the Mets a 4-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Phillies rebounded to capture the nightcap, 3-2, on a pinch-hit homer by Jose Cardenal in the ninth inning. In the opener, a one-out single by Doug Flynn started the Mets' big inning. After a sacrifice by Zachry, Lenny Randle received an intentional walk and Tim Foli drew another pass to load the bases. Mazzilli cleared the sacks by slamming a 3-2 pitch into the seats. The Mets had a 2-1 lead going into the ninth inning of the second game. With two out and nobody on, Bob Boone stroked a two-base hit and was replaced by pinch-runner Randy Lerch. Cardenal batted for Bud Harrelson and connected for the game-winning circuit clout.

[DH] Pirates 3, Expos 1 (day game) / Pirates 4, Expos 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Expos, 3-1 and 4-3. Bert Blyleven scattered five hits over eight innings in the opener and drove in all the Buc runs with a bases-loaded double. His two-base hit came with two out in the second and followed singles by Bill Robinson and Manny Sanguillen and an intentional walk to Steve Brye. Home runs by Robinson, Willie Stargell and Omar Moreno accounted for the Pirates' scoring in the second game. Moreno's was an inside-the-park affair in the third inning and tied the score. In that same inning, John Milner singled and Robinson smashed his circuit clout.

Padres 7, Giants 5 at San Francisco (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Dave Winfield in the first inning triggered the Padres to a 7-5 triumph over the sagging Giants, who lost their eighth game out of the last 11. Gene Richards opened the game with a walk and went to third when Willie McCovey committed a two-base throwing error on a bunt by Ozzie Smith. Fernando Gonzalez drew a walk and Winfield then connected for the third bases-loaded homer of his career. Doubles by Oscar Gamble and Rick Sweet resulted in the fifth run of the inning. The Padres put over what proved to be their deciding margin in the ninth, one run scoring on a double by Dave Roberts and another on a single by Sweet, before the Giants fell short with a two-run rally in their half.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (day game):
Beating St. Louis for eighth straight time this season, Cubs prevailed over Cardinals, 7-5. Cubs had early 4-0 lead, but Cards came back in fourth inning to tie contest, triple by Morales being the big blow. Home run by Murcer leading off fifth put Cubs ahead, 5-4, and they picked up another run in same frame on double by Trillo and single by Clines. Biittner had three hits and drove in two runs, including final tally in sixth.
