[DH] Orioles 8, Rangers 7 (night game) / Rangers 11, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The Rangers knocked out Jim Palmer while scoring seven runs in the fifth inning and posted an 11-1 victory in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader after the Orioles won the first game, 8-7, thanks to two errors by Jim Mason on one play. The Orioles had a two-run homer by Pat Kelly in the lidlifter and were leading, 7-4, until the Rangers rallied to tie the score in the sixth with a double by Kurt Bevacqua, single by Bump Wills, a walk and singles by Juan Beniquez and Jim Sundberg. In the Orioles' seventh, Larry Harlow walked with one out and took second on an infield out by Rich Dauer. Ken Singleton then grounded to Mason, who booted the ball and made a wild throw to pthe late, allowing Harlow to score the deciding run. Palmer already was losing, 2-0, in the nightcap before the Rangers put together three singles, an error, a walk and a balk in the fifth to chase the Orioles' ace. John Flinn gave four walks, plus Bert Campaneris' second single of the stanza, with an error thrown in, before the side was retired.

Red Sox 5, Twins 4 at Boston (day game):
George Scott not only hit one of the Red Sox' three homers in the game but also drove in the deciding run with a single in the eighth inning to beat the Twins, 5-4. The Red Sox opened the scoring with a run in the first inning when Carlton Fisk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Scott and Bob Bailey homered in succession in the fourth and Carl Yastrzemski added a circuit clout in the sixth. Fisk singled in the eighth and, after Fred Lynn went out, scored from second on Scott's single. The Twins collected 12 singles, including a pair by Rod Carew for the 2,000th and 2,001st hits of his career.

Angels 2, Tigers 0 at California (night game):
Frank Tanana pitched a shutout for his 13th victory and Carney Lansford drove in both of the Angels' runs to beat the Tigers, 2-0. Don Baylor singled, Joe Rudi doubled and Lansford beat out an infield hit to produce the initial run in the fifth inning. The Angels' rookie capped the scoring with a homer in the seventh.

Brewers 3, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Larry Hisle hit his 20th homer of the season, connecting with a man on base in the first inning, and Don Money added a solo shot in the sixth to carry the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the White Sox. Lary Sorensen, who allowed five hits while turning in his 12th victory and 12th complete game, was deprived of a shutout when Eric Soderholm homered for the White Sox run in the fifth inning.

Royals 8, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
A two-run double by Darrell Porter in the first inning and three-run homer by Pete LaCock in the second started the Royals off to an 8-2 victory over the Yankees. Porter delivered his double after the Royals loaded the bases on singles by George Brett and Hal McRae and a pass to Amos Otis. Freddie Patek was hit by a pitch and Frank White walked ahead of LaCock's homer. The Royals added their last three runs with the aid of two errors in the fifth, chasing Ed Figueroa, before they went hitless against Sparky Lyle and Bob Kammeyer in the last 4 2/3 innings.

A's 3, Blue Jays 2 at Oakland (day game):
A homer by Dave Revering with two out in the ninth inning carried the A's to a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. The A's took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, but the Blue Jays rallied to tie the score in the eighth with back-to-back doubles by Bob Bailor and Roy Howell, a single by Rico Carty and a sacrifice fly by John Mayberry. Revering's homer was the 14th served up by Blue Jay loser Tom Underwood this season.

Mariners 7, Indians 6 at Seattle (night game):
Two homers by Larry Milbourne, including the first grand slam of his major league career, powered the Mariners to a 7-6 victory over the Indians. Milbourne connected with the bases loaded in the second inning to cap a five-run outburst. After the Mariners added a run on a double by Bruce Bochte and a single by Bob Robertson in the third, Milbourne hit a solo shot in the fourth to produce what proved to be the deciding marker. Andre Thornton drove in three runs for the Indians with two homers and a single.

Braves 3, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves executed a triple play and three double plays while defeating the Phillies, 3-2. The Braves scored all their runs in the first inning. Jerry Royster led off with a single and was forced by Barry Bonnell. After Gary Matthews was retired, Jeff Burroughs and Bob Horner hit consecutive homers. The Braves pulled their triple play in the seventh after Greg Luzinski and Richie Hebner walked. Jose Cardenal grounded to Horner, who stepped on third to force Luzinski. Horner threw to second to force Hebner. Glenn Hubbard then whipped ball to first baseman Dale Murphy to nail Cardenal. Gene Garber, making his first appearance against his former Philadelphia teammates, pitched the last 3 1/3 innings in relief of Rick Camp and gave up the Phillies' runs in the ninth on an error, a ground-rule double by Hebner and single by Cardenal.

Cubs 3, Padres 1 at Chicago (day game):
One pinch-hitter struck out but another came through with a two-run single to enable the Cubs to defeat the Padres, 3-1. Randy Jones worked the first seven innings for the Padres and gave up a run on a double by Bill Buckner and single by Bobby Murcer in the seventh. The Padres tied the score against Dennis Lamp in the eighth on singles by Gene Tenace and Ozzie Smith around a sacrifice. Bruce Sutter took over and was the winner when the Cubs beat John D'Acquisto in the home half of the eighth. Ivan DeJesus and Dave Rader singled and Sutter sacrificed. Larry Biittner batted for Rodney Scott and struck out, but Greg Gross was more successful as a pinch-hitter for Gene Clines, rapping a single to drive in two runs.

Reds 7, Mets 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Joe Morgan triggered a four-run rally in the seventh inning as the Reds came from behind to defeat the Mets, 7-5. The Reds fell behind, 4-1, before cutting into their deficit with two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by George Foster and Dan Driessen. Mike Lum singled to open the seventh, Pete Rose walked and Ken Griffey singled to load the bases. Morgan then drove in two runs with his single to put the Reds ahead. A sacrifice fly by Foster and single by Johnny Bench added a pair and accounted for the Reds' winning margin.

Expos 8, Astros 0 at Montreal (night game):
Posting his first shutout since 1976, Woodie Fryman pitched the Expos to a 8-0 victory over the Astros. Tony Perez knocked in two of the Expos' first three runs with a double in the first inning. Andre Dawson homered in the third to ignite a four-run outburst and also accounted for the Expos' last run with a triple in the seventh inning.

Giants 6, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A safe squeeze bunt by Rob Andrews with one out in the 11th inning scored Larry Herndon and brought the Giants a 6-5 victory over the Pirates. Herndon singled and took third on a single by Jack Clark before Andrews pushed his bunt to the right of the pitcher's mound and was safe when Ed Whitson slipped trying to field the ball. Phil Garner drove in two of the Pirates' runs with a triple and double and scored once. Darrell Evans hit two homers for the Giants and also drove in the tying run with a single in the ninth for his fourth RBI of the game.

Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
With two out in the sixth inning, the Dodgers bunched three of their game total of four hits and scored twice to defeat the Cardinals, 2-1. Steve Garvey doubled and scored on a single by Ron Cey, who took second on the throw to the plate. Dusty Baker followed with a single, driving in Cey. The Cardinals came back with their run in the home half of the sixth on a triple by Jerry Morales and an error by Bill Russell.
