Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 2, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Combining on a four-hitter and not permitting any Orioles to reach third base, Steve Comer and Reggie Cleveland hurled the Rangers to a 2-0, 11-inning whitewashing of the Birds. Bump Wills opened the 11th with a single, stole second, continued to third when catcher Rick Dempsey's throw hit him in the back and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Bonds. Juan Beniquez then followed with a solo home run.

Red Sox 3, Twins 2 at Boston (night game):
A single by Carlton Fisk with two out in the 10th inning climaxed a two-run rally that brought the Red Sox a 3-2 decision over the Twins. An RBI single by Jose Morales had given the Twins a 2-1 lead in the top of 10th but the Sox came back in the bottom of the frame. A single by Garry Hancock kayoed Twins' starter Dave Goltz and brought on Mike Marshall, who retired Jerry Remy on a sacrifice and Jack Brohamer on a fly to right. But Jim Rice hit a broken bat single to center to plate Hancock. A single by Carl Yastrzemski moved Rice to third. Yastrzemski stole second before Fisk rapped his game-winning hit off the left-field wall.

Tigers 4, Angels 3 at California (night game):
John Wockenfuss, inserted into the game as a replacement for the injured Mickey Stanley, punched out a single to drive home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Tigers bested the Angels, 4-3. Rusty Staub opened the 10th with a single but the next two batters were retired. Milt May then got an infield hit and Wockenfuss singled to left to plate the decisive tally. The Tigers trailed, 3-0, early in the game but tied the score in the sixth, runs being driven home on a sacrifice fly by Lou Whitaker, a solo homer by Jason Thompson and an RBI single by May.

Brewers 6, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Scattering seven hits and pitching his 13th complete game, Mike Caldwell hurled the Brewers to a 6-1 triumph over the White Sox. The Brewers scored twice in the sixth inning. Robin Yount led off with a triple and scored on a single by Sal Bando. Bando moved to second on an infield out and Ben Oglivie received an intentional pass. The strategy backfired when the next batter, Dick Davis, singled up the middle to plate Bando. The Brewers added four more tallies in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Bando, a wild pitch, RBI single by Larry Hisle and sacrifice fly by Oglivie.

Royals 9, Yankees 7 at New York (night game):
The Royals dealt another blow at the sinking Yankees by beating the New Yorkers, 9-7, in 11 innings. Four runs in the top of the 11th were enough to withstand a Yank rally in the bottom of the frame. The outburst began with Hal McRae drawing a base on balls and being replaced by pinch-runner U.L. Washington. A sacrifice by John Wathan moved Washington to second. Amos Otis then hit a long fly to right that Thurman Munson dropped for an error, Washington moving to third and Otis winding up at second. Darrell Porter was given an intentional walk to load the bases. After Clint Hurdle bounced into a force out at the plate, Willie Wilson drew a walk to force in a run. Rich Gossage thought his last pitch to Wilson was a strike and was ejected for swearing at second base umpire Durwood Merrill. Bob Kammeyer replaced Gossage and was greeted by a two-run single by Freddie Patek and an RBI single by Frank White. The Royals had trailed, 5-3, going into the top of the ninth but tied the contest on RBI singles by Wathan and Otis.

A's 5, Blue Jays 3 at Oakland (night game):
Backed by a 12-hit attack, John Henry Johnson pitched the A's to a 5-3 victory over the Mariners. RBI singles by Jeff Newman and Dave Revering gave the A's a pair of runs in the first inning. A single by Mitchell Page, stolen base and single by Willie Horton made it 3-0 in the third. The A's got two more in the fourth on a single by Rob Picciolo, triple by Taylor Duncan and single by Page. Fourth-inning doubles by Roy Howell and Otto Velez scored the Jays' first run and they added two more in the sixth on a single by Velez, a walk and a triple by Dave McKay.

Indians 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Driving in three runs, Andre Thornton sparked the Indians to a 5-2 triumph over the Mariners. The first Indian run came in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk to Thornton. A sacrifice fly by Craig Reynolds tied it for the Mariners in the bottom of that frame. The Indians went ahead to stay in the fourth when Ted Cox singled, moved to third on a single by Duane Kuiper and scored on a balk by Jim Colborn. Kuiper, who took third on the balk, scored on a groundnut by Tom Veryzer. A two-run homer by Thornton in the eighth stanza put the game on ice for the Tribe.

[DH] Braves 3, Mets 0 (night game) / Mets 7, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Rookie Larry McWilliams won his first major league start as the Braves blanked the Mets, 3-0, in the first game of a twin bill. But the Mets came back to capture the second contest, 7-4. McWilliams went seven innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. The first Brave tally came in the seventh when Dale Murphy blasted his 13th homer of the campaign. A single by Rowland Office, double by Jeff Burroughs, walk to Bob Horner and two-run single by Joe Nolan in the eighth frame gave the Braves insurance. The Mets went ahead, 1-0, in the second inning of the second game when John Stearns belted a homer. In the fourth frame, Stearns singled and went to third on a double by Willie Montanez. Tom Grieve followed with a two-run single. The fourth run of the inning came on an RBI single by Tom Hausman. Stearns had an RBI single in the seventh and Skip Lockwood hit a circuit clout in the ninth.

Dodgers 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Two home runs by Reggie Smith powered the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Smith's first blast came in the opening frame after a single by Bill Russell and his second clout came with one out in the eighth inning. The Cubs led, 3-2, going into the seventh, but L.A. tied the contest on singles by Steve Garvey and Dusty Baker, a sacrifice, and a sacrifice fly by Bill North.

Reds 8, Expos 6 at Cincinnati (night game):
A pair of homers by George Foster helped the Reds erase a 6-0 deficit and gain an 8-6 triumph over the Expos. The score was 6-6 when Ken Griffey singled with one out in the seventh inning, continued to third on an error by Ellis Valentine and scored on an infield out by Joe Morgan. A double by Foster and single by Johnny Bench added an insurance run. The Expos had an early 6-0 lead but Foster triggered the Reds' comeback with a two-run homer in the fourth. His second homer, a three-run shot, climaxed a four-run fifth. Pete Rose singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to 30 games.

Astros 2, Phillies 1 at Houston (night game):
A homer by Jose Cruz leading off the bottom of the 11th lifted the Astros to a 2-1 triumph over the Phillies. The first Astro run came in the fifth frame on a single by Joe Niekro, sacrifice bunt by Rafael Landestoy and single by Terry Puhl. The Phils tied the game in the eighth on a leadoff single by Ted Sizemore, a stolen base by pinch-runner Bud Harrelson and one-out single by Bake McBride.

Pirates 8, Padres 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A pinch-hit single by Manny Sanguillen capped a two-run rally in the 10th inning that carried the Pirates to an 8-7 victory over the Padres. With the Bucs trailing, 7-6, Bill Robinson reached first safely on an error by shortstop Ozzie Smith, who had singled home the go-ahead run for the Padres in the top of the inning. A single by Willie Stargell advanced Robinson to third and a single by Rennie Stennett plated the tying tally. A long fly by Ed Ott moved Ken Macha, running for Stargell, to third, and Stennett to second before Sanguillen's game-winning hit. The Padres had rallied for three runs in the ninth with the tying marker coming across on a wild pitch by Pirate reliever Kent Tekulve.

Giants 9, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
Rob Andrews hit the first major league home run of his career and Gary Lavelle pitched brilliantly in relief to give the Giants a 9-7 triumph over the Cardinals. With the score 7-7 going into the top of the ninth, Andrews hit the first offering of reliever Buddy Schultz over the left field fence. Frisco tallied an additional run in that inning on singles by Terry Whitfield, Dave Clark and Willie McCovey. The circuit clout was the first for Andrews in 1,228 official big league at-bats. Lavelle, entering the game with the score tied, the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, got pinch-hitter Lou Brock to bounce into a forceout at the plate and then fanned Garry Templeton on three pitches. Whitfield and Darrell Evans each went 5-for-5 for the Giants.
