Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 2, Rangers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Getting single runs in each of the last two innings, Kansas City edged the Rangers, 2-1. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Jim Sundberg, but the Royals tied the game in the eighth on a one-out triple by George Brett and sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. In the ninth frame, Clint Hurdle singled with two out and was replaced by pinch-runner Willie Wilson, who moved to third on a single by Tom Poquette. Pinch-hitter Steve Braun then hit a blooper into short left to score Wilson and end the game.

Brewers 8, Red Sox 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
Standout relief pitching by Eduardo Rodriguez enabled the Brewers to topple the Red Sox, 8-6. After spotting the Sox a three-run lead in the first frame, the Brewers bounced back with single runs in the first and third and took the lead with four runs in the fourth. A two-run single by Charlie Moore highlighted the fourth-inning rally. Moore also clouted a solo homer in the game. Rodriguez relieved Andy Replogle with none out in the second and allowed only one run until the ninth when he was chased by a two-run single by Jim Rice. Bob McClure came on and retired Carl Yastrzemski on a fly to right to end the game with the tying runs on base. The start of the game was delayed more than two hours by rain.

Yankees 4, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Posting his 14th victory of the campaign, Ron Guidry hurled a four-hitter as the Yankees blanked the Twins, 4-0. The Yanks got two runs in the first inning on singles by Willie Randolph, Mickey Rivers and Thurman Munson and a balk by Twin pitcher Darrell Jackson. A double by Fred Stanley and RBI single by Mike Heath added another run in the seventh and an RBI single by Rivers accounted for the final tally in the ninth.

Giants 9, Cubs 8 at Chicago (day game):
The Giants led the Cubs, 9-8, with a man on first and two out in the top of the eighth inning when the game was suspended because of darkness. The contest had been interrupted three times by rain. Resumption of play was scheduled for July 28 at San Francisco.

Expos 7, Braves 3 at Montreal (night game):
Chris Speier drove in six runs by hitting for the cycle in sparking the Expos to a 7-3 victory over the Braves. Speier tripled home two runs in the second inning, drilled a three-run homer in the sixth and doubled home a run in the eighth. He also had a single in the fourth frame.

[DH] Mets 7, Astros 4 (day game) / Mets 5, Astros 4 at New York (day game):
The Mets swept a doubleheader from the Astros, 7-4 and 5-4, as John Stearns drove in four runs in the first game and a pinch-double by Joel Youngblood plated the winning tally in the 11th inning of the nightcap. After the Astros picked up a run in their first turn at bat in the opener, the Mets retaliated with three on a triple by Steve Henderson, a bunt single by Stearns and a homer by Willie Montanez. New York got four more in the second on a triple by Doug Flynn, walk to Elliott Maddox, RBI double by Tim Foli, walk to Henderson and three-run double by Stearns. In the second game, after rookie catcher Bruce Bochy put the Astros ahead, 4-3, with his first major league homer in the seventh inning, the Mets tied the contest in the eighth on singles by Foli, Lee Mazzilli and Montanez. In the bottom of the 11th, Montanez stroked a one-out single and Youngblood then doubled him home.

Phillies 8, Reds 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
A bloop single by Greg Luzinski broke a 6-6 deadlock in the sixth inning as the Phillies beat the Reds, 8-6. The winning rally started when Jerry Martin smacked a one-out single. He advanced to third on a single by Larry Bowa, who took second on the throw to third. Mike Schmidt received an intentional pass to load the bases and Luzinski followed with his single into short right. The second run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jose Cardenal. The Reds' Pete Rose got an infield single in the fifth inning to extend his consecutive game hitting streak to 33.

Pirates 7, Dodgers 6 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A throwing error by L. A. reliever Terry Forster permitted the winning run to score as the Pirates outlasted the Dodgers, 7-6, in 10 innings. Ed Ott led off the Buc 10th by beating out an infield hit but was forced at second by Phil Garner on an attempted sacrifice. With the infield drawn in expecting a bunt, Bruce Kison singled past third baseman Lee Lacy, sending Garner to third. Frank Taveras then hit a chopper back to Forster but the pitcher threw wildly past first base to allow the winning run to cross the plate. After a see-saw early struggle, the Dodgers had tied the contest in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith.

Cardinals 3, Padres 2 at St. Louis (day game):
RBI singles by pinch-hitter Tony Scott and George Hendrick lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 triumph over the Padres. The Padres had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Tucker Ashford and Gene Richards' forceout. With Rollie Fingers on mound for the Padres in the bottom of the frame, Garry Templeton began the Redbird rally with a one-out single. Jerry Mumphrey drew a base on balls and the single by Scott scored Templeton. The single by Hendrick then plated Mumphrey with the winning run.
