Yankees 7, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
Four RBIs by Roy White led the Yankee attack as the Bronx Bombers beat the White Sox, 7-4. White's two-run single in the sixth off losing pitcher Rich Hinton broke a 4-4 tie. Hinton walked Gary Thomasson and Fred Stanley before an infield out and intentional pass to Cliff Johnson loaded the bases. Hinton then hit Mickey Rivers with a pitch, forcing in Thomasson to tie the score, and White followed with his hit. After a fifth-inning single by Rivers, White blasted a home run.

Indians 11, Mariners 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Tossing a two-hitter and tying a major league record by striking out four batters in one inning, Mike Paxton hurled the Indians to an 11-0 rout of the Mariners. Dan Meyer led off the Mariners' fifth by swinging at a third strike, but reached first when the ball got by catcher Gary Alexander. Paxton then struck out Bruce Bochte, Tom Paciorek and Bill Stein in succession. The lst pitcher to strike out four batters in one inning was Mike Cuellar of the Baltimore Orioles on May 29, 1970. Rick Manning and John Grubb each drove in three runs to support Paxton. Manning doubled home two tallies to cap a four-run second stanza and also had an RBI single in the fifth frame. Grubb doubled home two runs to highlight a three-run fourth and had an RBI single in the fifth.

[DH] Angels 4, Tigers 2 (night game) / Tigers 5, Angels 0 at Detroit (night game):
The Angels took the first game of a twi-nighter from the Tigers, 4-2, in 11 innings, but the Tigers came back to win the second game, 5-0. In the first game, the score was 2-2 going into the top of the 11th inning when Carney Lansford led off with a two-base hit. He was wild-pitched to third by Kip Young, who was making his major league debut, and scored when Lyman Bostock drilled a hit off second baseman Steve Dillard's glove. A walk to Joe Rudi moved Bostock to second and he scored on a single by Brian Downing. In the second game, Jack Billingham tossed a seven-hitter and was never in serious trouble. Rusty Staub plated two in the first with a double and hit a solo homer in the fifth.

Royals 9, Red Sox 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Behind the six-hit pitching of Paul Splittorff, the Royals dealt the Red Sox their first shutout in 107 games, 9-0, as Clint Hurdle batted in six runs. The Sox had not been blanked since September 14, 1977. It was the Royals' seventh straight victory. Hurdle clouted a three-run homer in second inning, hit a sacrifice fly in fourth and had RBI singles in the sixth and seventh stanzas.

Orioles 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
After earlier hitting a three-run homer, Ken Singleton delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give the Orioles a 5-4 victory over the Twins. It was the Twins' ninth straight loss. Losing pitcher Mike Marshall walked Mark Belanger to open the 10th and a single by Rick Dauer and walk to Eddie Murray loaded the sacks before Singleton drove the ball to deep center field. The Orioles had moved ahead, 4-3, in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Pat Kelly, but the Twins tied it in their half on a solo blast by Roy Smalley.

Brewers 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Hitting .186 coming into the game, Buck Martinez singled twice and drove in two runs as the Brewers edged the Rangers, 4-3. The first Brewer run came in the third when Don Money reached first on an error by shortstop Bert Campaneris, raced to third on a single by Ben Oglivie and scored on a single by Larry Hisle. The Brewers added a pair in the fourth on a double by Gorman Thomas, triple by Sal Bando and single by Martinez. Martinez also had an RBI single in the sixth. Bob McClure relieved on the mound for Brewers in the ninth with runners on first and third and two out and struck out Mike Hargrove.

[DH] A's 7, Blue Jays 2 (night game) / Blue Jays 5, A's 4 at Toronto (night game):
The A's and Blue Jays divided a twin bill, the A's taking the first game, 7-2, and the Jays capturing the second contest, 5-4. In the opener, a sacrifice fly by Jeff Newman gave the A's a 1-0 lead in the second inning. They added three more tallies in the third frame on an error by Jay shortstop Luis Gomez, a single by Joe Wallis, triple by Taylor Duncan and single by Mitchell Page. The game was put on ice in the fifth on a single by Wallis, RBI double by Page and two-run homer by Willie Horton. After an RBI double by Mike Edwards had lifted the A's to a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning of the nightcap, the Blue Jays won the game in the seventh when Roy Howell led off with a single, took second on a single by John Mayberry and scored on a double by Al Woods.

Dodgers 7, Cardinals 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
A homer and triple by Reggie Smith paced the Dodgers to a 7-5 conquest of the Cardinals. Smith hit his circuit clout with Burt Hooton aboard on a walk and Bill North on base via a fielder's choice with two out in the seventh inning. Smith had a run-scoring triple in the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ron Cey. Smith also scored from third on a double-play grounder by Steve Garvey, to break a 3-3 deadlock in the sixth inning.

Reds 10, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Stroking a single up the middle on the first pitch of the game, Pete Rose extended his hitting streak to 34 games as the Reds routed the Expos, 10-3, giving rookie righthander Mike LaCoss a win in his first major league start. The Reds broke the game open with a six-run explosion in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Dan Driessen singled home one run and LaCoss hit a two-run single with the sacks full. Rose was hit by a pitch to force in another tally, Ken Griffey delivered an RBI single and Joe Morgan capped the rally with a two-run single.

Mets 12, Braves 3 at New York (night game):
After spotting Atlanta a three-run lead, the Mets stormed back to trample the Braves, 12-3. A two-run triple by Lee Mazzilli highlighted a three-run fourth inning and the Mets took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Steve Henderson. A five-run seventh stanza broke the game open. A double by Henderson and single by Willie Montanez produced the first run of the big inning. A bases-loaded walk to Ed Kranepool, two-run single by Nino Espinosa and a balk by Braves' reliver Dave Campbell produced the other four markers.

[DH] Phillies 6, Astros 1 (night game) / Phillies 8, Astros 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Getting solid hitting and effective pitching, the Phillies swept a twin bill from the Astros, 6-1 and 8-2. In the first game, Mike Schmidt hit the home run with a mate aboard to key a four-run third inning. A walk to Greg Luzinski, double by Richie Hebner and single by Garry Maddox accounted for two more tallies. The first Phillie run in the second game came in the third inning on a walk to Bud Harrelson and double by Larry Bowa. The Phils made it 3-0 in the fourth frame on a solo homer by Luzinski and squeeze bunt by Harrelson. Larry Christenson held the Astros hitless until Terry Puhl doubled with two out in the sixth.

Cubs 5, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
A two-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Padres. The score was tied, 3-3, going into the seventh when Jerry White opened with a single. Bill Buckner then sliced a drive to left which Gene Richards lost in the lights. The ball sailed over the outfielder's shoulder for an RBI double that put the Cubs ahead, 4-3. Two outs later, Buckner scored on a single by Manny Trillo. The Padres had rallied to manufacture a tie in the sixth stanza on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Ashford, single by pinch-hitter Oscar Gamble and infield single by Ozzie Smith.

Pirates 3, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
A six-hitter by Jim Bibby carried the Pirates to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Giants. All of the Pirates' runs came in the third inning. With one out, Bibby singled and was forced at second by Frank Taveras. Omar Moreno singled to right and Taveras scored all the way from first. A double by Dave Parker scored Moreno and a single by Bill Robinson plated Parker.
