Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Recording their fifth straight victory, the Yankees scored two runs in the ninth inning to down the White Sox, 3-1. With one out in the ninth, Lou Piniella singled to center and Chris Chambliss doubled down the left field line to score Piniella. Chambliss took third on throw home and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Graig Nettles. The game marked the end of Reggie Jackson's five-day suspension, but the Yankees' slugger never entered the game.

[DH] Tigers 4, Angels 3 (day game) / Angels 4, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
The Tigers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the first game of a doubleheader from the Angels, 4-3, but the Angels, paced by Dave Chalk's three hits, took the second contest. 4-3. The Tigers' winning outburst in the opener began with a double by Lou Whitaker and a walk to Rusty Staub. Dave LaRoche replaced starter Don Aase and yielded an RBI single to Jason Thompson that moved Steve Dillard, pinch-running for Staub, to second. After Steve Kemp and pinch-hitter Lance Parrish struck out, John Wockenfuss walked to load the bases and Aurelio Rodriguez walked to force in the tying run. With the count 2-0 on Alan Trammell, Dyar Miller came on to replace LaRoche. His first pitch was misplayed by catcher Brian Downing. Thompson dashed for the plate and scored by scrambling over Miller as Downing's return throw was wild. The score was 3-3 going into the ninth inning of the second game when Don Baylor drew a one-out walk and stole second. One out later, Chalk lined a single to left to drive home the winning run.

Royals 7, Red Sox 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Completing the three game series sweep, the Royals subdued the Red Sox, 7-3, as George Brett collected three hits, knocked in one run and scored twice, once on a steal of home. The Royals got five straight hits in their first turn at bat, including RBI doubles by Hal McRae and Amos Otis. After starter Jim Wright walked Clint Hurdle, Bob Stanley relieved and gave up two more runs on a fielder's choice by Tom Poquette and a single by Freddie Patek. A double steal by Brett and Otis, with Brett swiping home, gave the Royals a run in the second stanza. The other two tallies came across on a sacrifice fly by Otis in the fifth and an RBI single by Brett in the sixth.

Orioles 8, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
A two-run homer by Lee May highlighted the Orioles' 8-5 victory over the Twins. May blasted his 16th round-tripper of the campaign in a three-run fifth, scoring behind Ken Singleton, who had singled. Doug DeCinces doubled after May's blast and scored on a single by Rick Dempsey. Larry Harlow led off the game with a single, advanced to third on a double by Rich Dauer and scored on a sacrifice fly by Singleton. The Orioles' two runs in the third frame came on a single by Dauer, triple by Eddie Murray and double by DeCinces. Dauer singled home the Orioles' seventh run in the eighth.

Cardinals 2, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (day game):

The Redbirds added an insurance tally in the ninth when Keith Hernandez singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jerry Morales.

Reds 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Pete Rose in the 14th inning lifted the Reds to a 5-4 victory over the Expos. Pinch-hitter Rick Auerbach opened the 14th with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dave Concepcion. Ken Griffey hit an infield single with Auerbach holding third, but Rose then hit a fly bail to right to plate the winning tally. The Reds had a 4-0 lead but the Expos came back to kayo Tom Seaver in the eighth and tie the score. Rose stroked a single in the sixth inning, extending his consecutive games hitting streak to 36, just one short of the modern N.L. record set by Tommy Holmes of the Boston Braves in 1945.

Breaking a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, the Cubs went on to edge the Padres, 4-3. With two out in the sixth, singles by Manny Trillo, Gene Clines and Rodney Scott accounted for one run and Clines scored when Padre shortstop Ozzie Smith, after fielding Scott's grounder, threw wildly to third. The Padres got one run back in the bottom of the frame on a walk to Jerry Turner and singles by Gene Tenace and Bill Almon, but pinch-hitter Derrel Thomas flied out to end the inning.
