Today's scores and summaries:

A's 8, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A pair of three-run innings propelled the A's to a 8-4 decision over the White Sox. Dave Revering got a leadoff homer in the fourth frame before a single by Mario Guerrero, double by Taylor Duncan and two-run single by Glenn Burke. In the fifth inning, singles by Willie Horton, Revering and Guerrero produced one run. A throwing error by Greg Pryor allowed another run to score and Guerrero came in on a fielder's choice on the same play.

Tigers 9, Orioles 6 at Detroit (night game):
A five-run explosion in the third inning carried the Tigers to a 9-6 victory over the Orioles. Loser Mike Flanagan loaded the bases in the third on a single and two walks before a single by Aurelio Rodriguez plated two tallies and sent Flanagan to the showers in favor of Dennis Martinez. Tim Corcoran singled home another run and Alan Trammell brought in the fourth marker with a sacrifice fly. An RBI single by Ron LeFlore capped the scoring.

Royals 12, Mariners 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Collecting 14 hits against four Seattle pitchers, the Royals won their 11th game in last 12, a 12-3 lashing of the Mariners. With K.C. ahead, 1-0, Pete LaCock led off the fourth with a home run. A double by Amos Otis, triple by Clint Hurdle and single by Al Cowens sent Mike Parrott down to a third loss in his four decisions.

Angels 11, Brewers 9 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Angels outlasted the Brewers, 11-9, in a wild slugfest. A grand slam by Joe Rudi gave the Angels a 4-0 first-inning lead and Rudi drove in another run in the third on a sacrifice fly. The Angels built up an 8-0 lead with three more runs in the fourth frame and scored twice in the seventh on an RBI single by Bobby Grich and a throwing error by Gorman Thomas. The Brewers got five in the eighth on a two-run homer by Thomas and three-run homer by Sal Bando.

Blue Jays 5, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A two-run triple by Luis Gomez capped a five-run fourth inning that enabled the Blue Jays to snap their four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Twins. The first run scored on a wild pitch and the second scored on a sacrifice fly by John Mayberry. An RBI double by Dave McKay preceded Gomez' three-base hit to the left-center wall.

Yankees 3, Indians 1 at New York (night game):
A three-run homer by Lou Piniella in the bottom of ninth lifted the Yankees to a 3-1 triumph over the Indians. Mickey Rivers led off the Yank ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Willie Randolph. A single by Thurman Munson sent Rivers to third before Piniella hit his round-tripper. A sacrifice fly by Gary Alexander produced the Tribe tally in the top of the ninth.

Rangers 2, Red Sox 0 at Texas (night game):
Doc Medich fired a two-hitter as the Rangers blanked the Red Sox, 2-0. The Texas hurler retired the last 14 batters he faced. With one out in the eighth inning, Al Oliver stroked a single and Bobby Bonds followed with a home run.

Astros 5, Expos 0 at Houston (night game):
Airtight pitching by Joe Niekro carried the Astros to a 5-0 blanking of the Expos. The Astros began their scoring with a solo homer by Bob Watson in the fourth inning. In the fifth frame, a single by Jose Cruz, a sacrifice and a double by Niekro accounted for another tally. Niekro also had an RBI single in the seventh and Enos Cabell led off the eighth with a solo round-tripper.

Dodgers 8, Cubs 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Home runs by Steve Garvey and Davey Lopes powered the Dodgers to an 8-2 trouncing of the Cubs. Garvey's blast, the third grand slam of his career, came in the third inning and followed walks to Burt Hooton, Reggie Smith and Ron Cey. Lopes' round-tripper was an inside-the-park affair and came in the fourth inning following singles by Joe Ferguson and Bill Russell.

Mets 12, Reds 3 at New York (day game):
Pete Rose extended his modern N. L. record hitting streak to 39 games but Joel Youngblood drove in five runs with a two-run homer and a bases-loaded triple to lead the Mets to a 12-3 rout of the Reds. Rose doubled to lead off the fifth inning. After getting three runs in their first turn at bat, the Mets added three more in the third on a double by Steve Henderson, walk to Willie Montanez, infield hit by John Stearns and Youngblood's triple. The Mets got three more in the fifth on an RBI double by Stearns and Youngblood's homer.

Braves 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Hurling his 13th complete game of season, Niekro spaced eight hits to pitch Braves to 4-2 victory over Phillies. Score was 2-2 going into top of fourth when Horner singled, moved up on wild pitch and came home on two-out single by Chaney. Singles by Niekro and Gilbreath brought Chaney around.

Padres 6, Pirates 5 at San Diego (night game):
Going seven innings, Perry got credit for 11th win of season as Padres outlasted Pirates, 6-5. Gonzalez drove in three runs with pair of singles. Two of his RBIs came in seventh inning off reliever Jackson with two out and bases loaded. Other RBI came in fourth and followed walks to Gamble and Ashford. Pirates scored two in ninth on double by Taveras but Fingers came on to put out fire.

Cardinals 2, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Two-hitter by Martinez gave Cardinals 2-1 triumph over Giants. Rookie righthander stopped Clark's hitting streak at 26 games. Cards snapped 1-1 tie in eighth when Oberkfell reached first safely when Madlock misplayed his pop fly, advanced to second on sacrifice by Martinez and scored on single by Brock. Giants' run came in sixth on doubles by Winfield and Evans. First Card tally came on single by Templeton, stolen base and two grounders.
