Today's scores and summaries:

A's 7, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run outburst in first inning triggered A's to 7-4 victory over White Sox. First frame was capped by two-run single by Duncan and after Sox tied score, RBI single by Revering put A's ahead, 4-3, in fifth frame. A's added two runs in seventh on RBI single by Burke and throwing error by Sox catcher Colbern. Final tally came in ninth on solo homer by Horton.

Orioles 7, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
First-inning home runs by Murray and Singleton propelled Orioles' 7-3 decision over Tigers. Tiger starter Slaton was down, 4-0, after throwing just 10 pitches. Harlow and Dauer singled, Murray unloaded a three-run homer and Singleton followed with a solo clout. McGregor scattered eight hits in going route for Birds.

Royals 3, Mariners 1 at Kansas City (night game):
An eight-hit route-going pitching performance by Gura was backed by timely hitting as Royals eased past Mariners, 3-1. After first-inning singles by Cruz, Reynolds and Paciorek gave Mariners 1-0 lead, K. C. tied it in third when Patek walked, stole second, advanced to third on groundout and scored on single by Braun. Porter singled with one out in fourth and rode home on double by Hurdle. Royals added insurance tally in seventh on single by White, groundout and single by McRae, who kept his hitting streak alive at 15 games.

Brewers 6, Angels 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Boosting his league-leading total of complete games to 15, Mike Caldwell pitched the Brewers to a 6-3 decision over the Angels. The Brewers got two runs in the first inning on a single by Robin Yount, walks to Don Money, Larry Hisle and Sixto Lezcano and a sacrifice fly by Sal Bando. The Brewers built a 4-0 cushion in the second. A single by Jim Gantner, double by Charlie Moore and single by Yount were good for one marker and the other came across as Money bounced into a double play. Despite a shabby performance, Nolan Ryan struck out three batters to pass Bob Feller for ninth place on the all-time strikeout list with 2,582.

Twins 6, Blue Jays 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Hitting for the cycle, Mike Cubbage sparked the Twins to a 6-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Cubbage hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, two-run triple in the seventh, double in the second and single in the fifth. Stan Perzanowski, making his first major league appearance in more than two years and who joined the Twins two days previously from Toledo, scattered six hits to post the win.

[DH] Yankees 11, Indians 0 (day game) / Indians 17, Yankees 5 at New York (day game):

Reggie Jackson, loudly booed by the fans every time he came to the plate, responded with two RBI singles and a solo homer to lead the Bronx Bombers in the lidlifter. The Tribe routed Catfish Hunter by sending 13 batters to the plate in the first inning of the second game. The erstwhile great righthander was knocked out without retiring a batter for the first time in his 445 major league starts. Hunter gave up a bases-loaded walk to Andre Thornton, two-run single to Bernie Carbo and RBI single by Tom Veryzer before reliever Bob Kammeyer was bounced for a bases-loaded triple by Duane Kuiper.

Rangers 3, Red Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
Homers by Bump Wills and Mike Hargrove powered the Rangers past vRed Sox, 3-1. The score was 1-1 when Wills and Hargrove clouted solo round-trippers in the fifth inning. The first Texas run came in the fourth when Jim Sundberg was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by Al Oliver and scored when the throw by Butch Hobson hit him in the back on a fielder's choice grounder by Bobby Bonds. The only Sox score was a homer by Sam Bowen in the third inning. It was his first major league hit.

Astros 8, Mets 3 at Houston (night game):
A two-hitter by J.R. Richard was backed by a 13-hit attack as the Astros thumped the Mets, 8-3. The Astros got three runs in their first turn at bat on back-to-back triples by Terry Puhl and Dave Bergman, singles by Enos Cabell and Bob Watson and a sacrifice fly by Art Howe. The Astros got an unearned run in the second and chased Met starter Tom Hausman with another pair in the third.

Padres 6, Pirates 3 at San Diego (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Gene Richards broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning and sent the Padres to a 6-3 victory over the Pirates, extending the Bucs' losing streak to five games. Bill Almon drew a one-out walk in the seventh and Grant Jackson replaced Ed Whitson on the mound for the Pirates. A single by pinch-hitter Jerry Turner moved Almon to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Richards. Turner took second on the throw to the plate and scored on a single by Ozzie Smith.
